Guess it means a nano with more volume, which means more GB of space for songs, video etc. But the clickwheel does seem to take up a lot of front space when you compare it with the Touch. The whole clickwheel or not comes into play. They could always mini the Touch I guess.

why does it mean a nano with more volume? it looks the same form as the first gen nano, which has a smaller (or at least not bigger) volume than the current "fat nano".

Re: Girlfriends' New Products

If you always wait for the next product, you'll never buy anything ;)

If they really go ahead with the rumoured redesigns, the "Fatboy" Nano is going to be an instant classic as the only one of it's kind. I think it's going to be one of the collectible ones...for people that do that sort of thing. That being said, I like the redesign. I miss my old 2G nano and was heart broken when it fell into my Aunt's hottub 3 weeks ago. On the plus side, I've now learned about Apple's iPod recycling program, which is going to be lovely enough to give me 10% off of whatever they do release next month. See? It's not so bad. You just need fortuitous timing.

1. Kevin Rose is a douche. Yes, douche. We know. Its about that time again and we know apple is just about to intro new ipods. Its a given. Stop rehashing old rumors. You dont know anything.

2. I doubt the iPod nano will be that big. I'm expecting a micro version of the touch. That's my prediction.

Bring on the CBs!

Didn't we have a similar fake iPod last year? Some folded paper and plastics that made it look round like in this picture.

With that much space around the clickwheel it has to be double the size of the current Nano, it's hard to believe this is the new Nano.

I don't like the new design of the iPod nano, can't think of what they will add to iTunes 8.0 but hopefully some awesome things and Blu-ray in 10.5.6 would be awesome.

the nano just went through a redesign. i don't buy it and wouldn't btw. i look for a newer touch that's a clone of the 3G iphone and new MB/MBP's. and of course updated software including iTunes and OS X.

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
Obvious.

- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
So the iPod nano, touch, and classic will get $200~$250 price drops? Slim to fat chance. The iPhone is cheap because it's subsidized.

- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
Likely.

- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
Isn't it 7.8 as rumored not long ago?

- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
Fairly obvious.

- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6
I'll believe it when I see it.

Does this mean the September event will focus solely on iPod and iTunes?

Do you think the MacBook and MacBook Pro will still be refreshed this September?!
I still think that. They may be refreshed the week before, or the last week of September.

And given his past rumor record, Kevin Rose isn't exactly an AppleInsider or 9 to 5 mac.

Fair enough, but 3G and GPS were pretty much a given. I think everyone knew that was coming. Also, was Kevin the first to predict the Nano? I recall that one being pretty widespread knowledge well before it happened.
Yeah, and the "15" Intel MacBook" was also rumored earlier. New iLife/iWork? Given.

What about the brand new Apple tablet handheld device?
I don't think it's coming. Instead, the iPhone OS mini-tablet is coming sometime.

- a 5 to 6 or 7" multi-touch wide screen,
- have the dimension of a pocket book, almost like a PSP to fit in the pocket or purse,
- EGDE, 3G, Bluetooth, Wifi connection for Networking,
- iSight for Mobile iChat, Skype call, etc...
- GPS for Car Navigation, Travel information, or Localisation Application
- Accelerometer
- Evolved on-screen keyboard
- GPU and QT chips for high quality gaming and video compression/decompression
- 4 direction buttons, 4 actions buttons, two alternative back buttons and a joystick (such the PSP)
- a 16Gb Slate disk
- a full OS X (with iCal, Mail, Safari, iTunes, iChat, Finder, iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iWork, probably few games and even probably some new apps for Mobile, Tablet and Game)
Nope. Mac OS X isn't designed for a touchscreen, isn't designed for a 5"~7" display, and isn't designed for a 16 GB drive (Mac OS X takes up like half of that). iPhone OS with iLife and iWork is much more suitable for that device.

Guess I need to start putting watermarks on my mockups.

Shuffle's clickwheel diameter ~ 1 inch
Nano's clickwheel diameter ~ 1 inch.

The nano is currently 2.75 inches tall - a 2 inch diagonal screen (320x240) and the clickwheel. The screen in the picture + gaps verticaly is > 2x the clickwheel size so it's > 3 inches tall. With a screen viewed normally much taller than wide, it seems it's much likely supposed to be viewed sideway, but then the clickwheel is the wrong way.

I could see them make a bigger nano to include certain features, but wouldn't it be fatter width ways than just taller, or just scrap the clickwheel, wouldn't a haptic clickwheel be a better solution potentially?

http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html

Edit - it's not too taller - curious about the curvature - wasn't there a thread about Steve talking about curved screens in an off hand manner at allthingsd this year, when he was up on the stage will Gates? There's a youtube vid floating around somewhere. I initially thought if it was any indication of a way Apple was going, it'd be more the route Alienware took with it's demo curved gaming screen, rather than something like this. We haven't even seen OLED screens for iPods yet, which I would have thought would be the next venture, amongst other things (Bonjour, rudimentary GPS, touchscreen, droppping clickwheel etc).

3) My most wanted one: iMAID (Multimedia Apple Internet Device... LOL, I'm just kidding for the name)

With the success of the iPhone and proof the ability of Apple to reduce the size of a portable computer and the flexibility of OS X for portable device,
we can easily suspect to see a new kind of device, such a mix of Sub MacBook, Mac UMPC, Mac MID, Tablet MAC and MAC PSP.
This device could have all the successful features from the iPhone, plus some new innovation.

[As explain by Marx55 with this link : http://www.ilounge.com/gallery/iphone_concept/iphonePro2.jpg ]

Except the device would have:

- no drive (such the MacBook Air)
- "on the air" Apps downloading from iTunes

- A price tag between $599 and $799. It could be expensive for a game station (to compare to Sony PSP or Nintendo DS), but it's not so much for a small tablet, sub-notebook, psp, Multimedia Internet Device, etc... We saw lately for the CES, a lot of new coming small form factor device... there's definitely a market for this kind of devices, mostly with we merge with the game market)

After the music, movie, tv show, family stuff (such photo, movie, web) and productive domain (exchange, office, ...), the way to go is the Game Market... it's a really huge market mostly when you see the success of the last game stations (xbox360, PS3, Wii, PSP and DS together!!)

Having multiple device with a common plateform to develop game, will help to have the same game released for: iPhone, Mobile Tablet, Notebook/Desktop or AppleTV (MacMini / AppleGame?).

Also, by having an iTunes Distribution Model, the developers will be assured against piracy. The numbers with the Apps Store proved there's a real market.

By looking the file size for (HD) movie, we can imagine than Apple will go for a complete software electronic distribution with iTunes (even for Desktop Apps). It will be faster, easier and even greener (which avoid paper, box, shipping, gas for transportation) and better security.

Absolutelly agree. Do not forget the full Office with PowerPoint (besides Apple Keynote) for the ultimate full blown presentation remote using NATIVE Keynote and NATIVE PowerPoint files (full transitions, animations and video). Only for that we need thousands for our University.

BUT THERE IS A TROJAN HORSE HERE, AND IS AN AMAZING ONE:

"Support the authoring of full iPhone and iPad applications...making the iPad the cheapest software development platform yet."

Inside the iPad: Why a $100 Apple Laptop Is Probably Inevitable
http://connectme.typepad.com/news/2008/07/inside-the-ipad.html

So, it would be the ultimate iPhone, iPod touch and Mac development platform. Expect Apple market share to double next year!

Oppenheimer and even Steve Jobs have said that the new product will be released on July to September:

http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/rumor_apples_secret_product_is_macbook_touch/P100

And remember, no more than 5 to 7 inches. Even the MacBook Air is too large and heavy for us. We want the full Mac OS X on our hand and on our pocket!

ugh...

Some of these posters' rants are making me violently ill.

Chances are that this mockup you see isn't an actual sample, they hardly ever are. Remember the Ice White PowerMac G5 on a crumpled piece of paper? But what it does show is one possibility.

But the people that are ripping it apart because there is a chance Apple is going to change the form factor yet again or the ones that are screaming because they bought a nano 6 months ago and now feel cheated/entitled should be dragged out to the back shed and beat severely.

What happened to the good old days when no one bitched about a new update for ANYTHING Apple? Hell even when the PowerMac G4's went from 450Mhz to 466Mhz we didn't scream about how it only went up by 16Mhz.... we were GRATEFUL it went up at all.

Boy I MUST be old.....

Oh... and BTW... I think that the info from Rose sounds pretty good and I LOVE the possibility that the nano will look like this mock up.

Am I the only one who thinks this design is really awesome? If you don't like this, then you're probably not a big fan of the MBA. I loved the direction of the MBA design, and as a result I'm a huge fan of this Nano if it turns out to be true.

Remember the DUAL battery iPhone prediction? HA! Kevin Rose has NOT been very accurate with his predictions at all. Most of those predictions can be speculated by anyone.

- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.

C'mon. These are almost guaranteed. I doubt any Bluray support on the Mac until FCP Studio is rev'd to support Bluray.

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but why would this imply a refresh soon? I don't really understand why the shipping time varies anyway. It's either in stock, or it's not, so I would have thought it would be 24 hours or like 2 weeks for example (however long it takes until they get more in stock).

I wonder if they are the same people who complained about the form factor of the "fat" iPod nano leaks.

There are several reasons "why not."

First, Mac OS X isn't designed for a multi-touch display.
Second, Mac OS X has hardware requirements far above those of any reasonably priced handheld device.
Third, Mac OS X works best on a display larger than 5"~7".
Fourth, Apple already has an OS that works on handheld devices—the iPhone OS. If Mac OS X is modified enough to fit on a handheld device, it might not retain application compatibility, and at that point the iPhone OS is more suitable.
Fifth, Apple is rumored to be developing an iPhone OS mini-tablet.

Am I the only one who thinks this design is really awesome? If you don't like this, then you're probably not a big fan of the MBA. I loved the direction of the MBA design, and as a result I'm a huge fan of this Nano if it turns out to be true.
It looks pretty good. The only thing is the top and bottom appear to have straight edges instead of the curvature of the current iPods.

I doubt any Bluray support on the Mac until FCP Studio is rev'd to support Bluray.
Since it's not rumored until 10.5.6, there's still time for FCS to be revised.

iAgree with Kilamite. You are obviously a smart guy, so indulge us with a bit more than just arrogant responses that state nothing more than just your opinion. No offence..;)
"Not going to happen" is arrogant? I've seen it used many times…
