and you can't f*** with Apple and their ads.

I do. Infact, I have a complaint lodged with the UK ASA (along with 16 other people) about one of their iPhone ads, which, pending review by the ASA council, is being upheld and the ad will have to be pulled for being intentionally misleading.

Which advert is that?

The one with the world's fastest ever 3G connection?

Sorry, but what a pathetic post.

I hope you were joking

amazing - really? They're just the same crap Apple have been doing for years, it stopped being funny a while back, and no one in the world cares anymore.

Rawr! someone had a bad day at the office. ;) They are coming to their end of life but I have to admit I laughed out loud at the 2nd one.

That banned ad is the 'all parts of the internet' one

I wrote in about the 'twice as fast' one. Not even on WiFi can the device perform that fast - even ignoring the outrageous connection speed inferred, the simple performance of the device is not that rapid, and never can be.

This highlights it rather well w.r.t. connectivity http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oaN1Nz1Dyls - notice it's not just connectivity that's nowhere near as fast, but actual performance of the machine itself. A very similar ad ( simply regionalised for London ) aired in the UK. That's what I submitted my complaint about.

I love my iPod touch - I really do - but I hate Apple lying in its advertising.

As for these new 'I'm a Mac' ads, sadly, I don't think the ASA would take too kindly to "This advert is misleading as not all Mac users are the same trendy smug arrogant annoying *$@* as depicted in the advert"

Hilarious! Apple gets the best of Microsoft again!

But now "PC" fully represents Microsoft (like we didn't already know). Up until now, he has been representing all non-Mac PCs, in theory.

Uh, no, he has been an xp and now a vista PC for quite some time. Have you actually watched the ads?

So Apple spent millions on a campaign to comment on a campaign that spends millions? The ad agency that has handled Apple (for over 25 years) I'm sure has spent WAY OVER 300 million (the estimated advertising budget for windows)

So you are comparing Apple's advertisement budget for 25 years with a _single_ advertising campaign for Microsoft, which was shut down after airing two commercials?

Shallow

I love mac, they have great products, but I hate their business practice. There ads are just sleazy, low blows, that are all generally extremely over exaggerated or on the verge of not being true. They should show some class, they try to portray this image of caring deeply for their customers and products, but they act like a little 9 year old competing for a cute girl. I hate it every time they come on I just lose more and more respect for them. They always talk about things that are so horrible on vista and are generally stuff that can easily be turned off or worked around. Anybody who has half a brain can work windows vista and it can do everything a mac can do and more. They talk about their ichat camera and show this installation of a webcam by taping it to PC's head, when pretty much every laptop now comes with a camera built in that is higher quality than the mac camera, and the laptops are cheaper and have way more options to customize, like Blu-Ray and memory card slots etc...I mean I am typing this right now on a Macbook and I love it! But I have a windows laptop that is faster, can play all the games that are completely absent on Macs, which they fail to mention in their ads, they boast their superior operating system like it is a hundred times better than Vista but I see myself being forced to reboot my mac into bootcamp to perform something and I have NEVER had to get off of windows and go into OS X to do anything. I know I am going to get flamed by all the close minded mac fanboys that find any reason to put down PC and let all the faults of OS X slide like they do not exist. The hardcore mac fanboys who won't even touch a PC (yet are self proclaimed experts on all of their flaws) are IMHO the most annoying, hard headed, arrogant, superficial bunch out of all the fanboys and girls. Now I am going to say it again I love the mac I am on a macbook right now, but these commercials are low and very childish...

If you think about car ads, you could make some of the same complaints, but it's just how the ad business works. Different brands of cars give you mostly the same features. The ads pick out little differences and exaggerate their importance, often using humor. When a TV ad shows a driver speeding on a mountain road with beautiful scenery, you could call that misleading, since that's not what the city driving experience is really like for a good number of people, but we don't complain about the ads for that reason. Apple's ads are like most ads that try to get an emotional response from viewers; they are about an impression, a feeling, a meta-message.

Most ads gloss over disadvantages of their own product and try to convey a feeling and a message rather than give you boring facts and figures and buzzwords that much of the audience won't understand. That's what Apple does here, and it's good business sense.

PC and Mac are cartoon characters having a friendly rivalry, and it's a metaphor to get people to laugh a bit and come away leaning more toward Macs and less toward Windows.

At the same time, I'd personally like to see Apple's ads more often show people using their Macs to enjoy themselves -- editing a movie, organizing photos, making music, etc. -- even though PCs can do similar tasks, because the pleasant experience of using a Mac is another message they should try to get across.

I am so sick of these ads...

It just makes Mac people look like elitists, and not all of us are.

Please, Apple, just show what you can do on a Mac in 30 seconds, like, I don't know, import video from a camcorder or pictures from your digital camera?

There are SO many experiences that are easier for consumers... like adding a new printer for example. Show a video of a guy adding a new laser printer on a mac, and another of the same guy trying to install the drivers in vista.

Or hey, here's an idea... interview an IT guy confessing that he secretly loves Macs but could never admit it in front of his MCSE touting, lemming master boss.

Anything but these snobby ads. Please!

Right, but I was referring to the two latest Mac ads, since that's the topic of this thread. Perhaps I overgeneralized; I was just trying to fit "Apple" and "ads" into some pre-existing lyrics.

My point is that while Apple's "Get a Mac" marketing team tends to play the role of the joker, nevertheless, they have sharp tongues and minds. Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.

wow that was pitiful

Seriously, an ad making fun of another company for advertising? Seriously. No really, seriously? Just when I thought Apple couldnt come up with anymore lame things to use against Microsoft they prove me wrong. Why dont they just stop while they still have fans?

Pot-kettle-black.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple but these ads have become very stale even before this "I'm a PC" "I'm a Mac" war began.

they may have spent over 300 mill since the beginning of this "I'm a PC, I'm a MAC" but thats over 3 years, which has generated lots of revenue for them, and has caused a lot of people to switch to a mac, it got me to think about mac more and more until I finally switched last year. And those ads must barely cost Apple anything. Where as MS spent 300 million over 4 months on a, so far, failed ad campaign.

It really doesn't cost Apple that much to add new ads like these, they dont have to think about location, erroneous backdrop costs or pay people to think about that sort of thing, because that is all said and done. Its just the cost of new ideas, the actors, the crew (filming, pre and post prod) and the cost of the tv networks etc.

Look, there are dozens of posts in here like this, but, like others have said, this is simply the nature of advertising. It's just a little sleazy. Apple did some of that kind of advertising back in the 90s and it was lame. Besides, that's what Msoft is trying to do right now. It's just as bad. Plus I can think of several of these current ads that outline ways Macs function better than their generic counterparts. Ummm let's see there's the digital camera one... "Better results", "Self pity", "Time machine" and probably a couple others. "Out of the box" might even qualify. They are just doing it in a more creative, graphic way. If you want to talk about disgusting; "I'm a PC and I've been made into a stereotype"? In the ad world that type of ripoff is considered a big no-no, and I can't believe C.P.B. actually went there. I just got off the phone a couple hours ago with a longtime Msoft/PC defender friend of mine who just decided to make the switch. My buddy sounded like a damn Apple spokesman, going on about how much better Time Machine is than Restore, and how viruses aren't as big an issue etc. etc. Not because of the ads, but this is a real phenomenon, and Apple can afford to be a little cocky because their product is better. If Msoft had a better product, you can rest assured they'd be more than a little cocky. And I bet you'd be bitching about that too.

I just watched them, they're FUNNY!!! PC users just don't get it, because (like their commercial says) they are PCs!

What a sad life to lead... :D
getting a bit judgemental here, aren't we?
then again, its you, mac users. ;)

Show a video of a guy adding a new laser printer on a mac, and another of the same guy trying to install the drivers in vista.

That'll have viewers on the edge of their seats.

Complain about these ads all you want but judging by Apple's skyrocketing Mac sales, they're obviously effective, they have won industry awards and have forced Microsoft into completely changing their marketing strategy, due to the damage these ads were causing them in public perception.

And you want to change that to 30 seconds of somebody installing drivers on their computer?

I think that Apple should divert their effort into installing a Blue ray into their laptops (sorry, notebooks).
It was pathetic to read Steve Jobs statement that it is too expensive to put a Blue ray into $1999 Mac, while my $1000 HP has one.

I *heart* this post. Yeah. When was the last time they did a 30 second ad not painting a broad brush stroke of why OSX is better than Windows and concentrated on the Mac and told the viewer what it is that is so great about it (ID it, tell us how it works)? That "Get A Mac" campaign is soooo played.

Arrogance. Pure arrogance.

If microsoft wants to make an effective counter ad to this, they can razz Apple about how they raised prices on their laptops while leaving out simple, basic things like FireWire, matte screens and color options. You know .... The kind of stuff you van get on PC laptops that are half the price.

Now THAT would be funny
