That is a weird argument. Of course he should as that is the only GPU he has and can get until the Mac Pro arrives.

Apple decided to go this way (which is fine) but that doesn't mean that we accept everything as is. GPU is still a problem on Mac especially for 3D etc.
HW Raytracing support is one thing thats so so needed.

Only if you compare iGPUs directly to dGPUs, which you really shouldn't.

You can build a PC and get much more performance for the same price as the M2 Ultra Mac Studio. Frankly, Apple Silicon on desktop makes no sense because performance per watt is of no concern. Who are Mac Studio's and the upcoming Mac Pro for? Apple can't compete with nVidia, AMD and Intel on desktop systems. Buying Apple desktop hardware is throwing away money.
A friend of mine who owns a video studio bought a MacStudio last summer - although he's using Premiere, After effects and Davinci and has been working on a PC before which offered more bang for the buck. (But he had a mac pro before that.)

His foremost reason for buying a mac studio: Almost silent operation. It's really hard to build a PC nearly that silent.

Other reasons are that he prefers MacOS over Windows, the small form factor, and that in real world tests a custom built but louder PC for the same money would only have been around 8-18% faster. And even that only in certain use cased like exporting video (which is just a tiny fraction of your work time as an editor nowadays).

So, I guess that's the use case. It's a machine that's around 25% more expensive than a PC with compareable specs. A little less if you factor in power savings over the years. It is non-upgradeable (and RAM and SSD cost an arm and a leg) and it won't compete in the ultra high end. But it's reliable, needs minimus setup and maintenance time, is pretty quiet and small and has a different OS (and some exclusive software like Logic).

Do you pay for electricity?!?! Buying ridiculously inefficient PC hardware with terrible performance per watt is actually throwing money away.
If you're running the PC hardware and Air Conditioning, then yes it is a little wasteful, but if you're running the heat in your home it is not really wasteful at all. If you're running any type of heat, then the PC extra cost is about the same in terms of cost per BTU. So you run your PC and use less from your heater.

Any difference between the PC and Mac in energy usage is less than the cost of a daily Starbucks before work. You know you should brew your own Folgers and quit wasting all the money.

The privilege of wasting money is a freedom that most desire.

If it's "just" a speed boost by moving from M1 to M2, I wonder why it took Apple so long. Not that I complain about the upgrade, I just don't understand why switching CPU takes Apple so long. Is it a production chain limitation ?
I wonder too. If the M twos are overclocked and there’s a pile of them maybe it’s a heat problem?

Logging in to say I bought a new Mac studio in April and love it. Would be bummed if there was an update already, but the machine rules for video editing and I love finally being able to use a monitor of my own choosing. I agree they might as well abandon the Mac Pro.

Sounds like you need a different desktop PC. Your experience is not representative of most desktop PC's.
My room is fairly sound proof so I need a dead silent computer or else it needs to sit somewhere else. I’ve never had a PC quite enough to sit on the desk while I record. Believe me, I’ve tried. My Mac is plenty quiet, though. I’m not knocking PCs as I obviously use them. But I do see my Mac as pulling ahead in many circumstances at the moment.

I think Gurman's earlier reporting made sense: that the Studio and Pro would follow a tick-tock cycle. M1 Studio, M2 Pro, M3 Studio, etc.
No, it never made any sense at all. That's how I knew Gurman pulled the whole thing out of his ass.

2020 iMac 27" 14nm is 34 months old.

Apple, please release a 5nm M2 Pro replacement of it this week.

I'm unwilling to wait to Q1 2025 for the 3nm M3 Pro.
Maybe now’s the time to transition to a stand alone display that doesn’t need to be tossed aside every upgrade cycle? Save you money in the long run.

With the pricing of the current studio display vs what the 5k iMac use to cost, I don’t see them releasing a 27” all in one anytime soon. At least not at an affordable price point.

This! And electricity is not going to get any cheaper in the future. And you can use a Mac laptop, like a real laptop, unplugged, and still get full power, unlike most of the PC laptops.

All it takes to fix the whine is a proper heat sink and a low speed or no fan, but Apple fired all of there Heat Sink engineers years ago.
It's been determined that all the "whine" is, is a resonance created by the ventilation holes on the back. To fix it all you have to do is block off about an inch worth of holes on one side with some tape. Apple engineers can figure out a different way to fix it, but it doesn't require changes to the fan or heat sink.

Just fix the fans on the Mac Studio. It’s quiet sure but the high pitch sound is awful. And I attempted to swap my studio 5 times and they all faced the issue. I have very sensitive ears. I would take louder fans over this any day.

At this point just rebrand the Mac Studio as the Mac Pro, as it’s a Mac Pro in everything except expandability
Problem is some folks want those PCI slots.
But you’re right for most people Mac studio is probably enough. Still like to see them build a Mac Pro even though it’s not something I need, or would ever buy.

Woah, i haven‘t heard this before.

Now that its summer and windows are open or AC is on I cant heard it, but might try this next winter.

Thanks!

I understand Mac Pro users want PCI slots, I do too I'm a PC gamer I love my expandability. Thing is, Mac Pro is a niche, a niche that is rapidly shrinking as many professionals who need that power are moving to Nvidia powered workstations since Apple is taking way too long, and since the Nvidia workstations are a lot cheaper with more options for expansion. For Apple, they might be looking to leaving that business sector since it's a lot more profitable to just push the Mac Studio instead as a prosumer desktop, since it's selling like crazy with it's low price but fast performance

At this point the only group I see a market for the Mac Pro is the music industry and audio professionals, which is already being filled by the other ARM Macs. Audio pros just need a lot of RAM, which a Mac Studio can provide.

Pls compute how much your suggested setup would cost someone who replaces their Mac every 10 years?

A decade ago that 5K display 600 nits we're enjoying now was a 2.5K display at half those nits.

Truth! It’ll be interesting to see if they actually come out with a Mac Pro.
Some of the rumors mentioned the processor being on a card, so you just buy more cards for more processing.
Going to be interesting for sure. Can’t wait to see what the price will be.🤪
