Wow... I was going to buy the 11.6"... no way that is happening now!

Dumb Apple... :(

Flash is and will be used heavily for some time... I see Apple not allowing it on the iOS devices as a keen technical and smart business stance nonetheless. Doing it on the iPhone and iPad because of true mobile bandwidths being hogged is logical, but on a MacBook Air...

Just dumb, very dumb Apple...

Eh? Just because it doesn't ship with Flash doesn't mean you can't install Flash. Just download and install it. It's not that hard is it?

If you use Safari 5.1 try removing the Adobe Reader plug in or switch Safari to 32 bit. Adobe are so useless they haven't updated their plug in to 64 bit and it can cause a lot of issues.

Are you suggesting that the Adobe Reader plug in - used or not is causing the crashes. I don't think so. For one - I don't have it installed. I'm on Safari 5.01.

Breaking news! Macs don't ship with Firefox! Or Chrome! Or Picasa! Or VLC! Or.. etc etc.

Well to be fair - Macs don't ship with those because they have competing software.

Firefox/Chrome = Safari
Picasa - iPhoto
VLC - Quicktime

Perhaps if you gave a better example you could justify your position that this is equivalent.

For what? I un-installed Flash on my machine and don't miss it one bit. And I use Facebook everyday.

Oh you mean for the "Games" that steal your information and send it to Russia via Zynga?

Yeah, I can see why you can't live without Flash. Jeez.

Honestly , I prefer using facebook on my iPad just for that reason, and farmville and bejewled will appear on the Mac App store when it launched I would imagine.

Every facebook user ever.

Completely wrong, and arrogant.

EDITED

***I like Flash... Flash is cool...***

Yea too late, we read the other post

Hmmmm. I guess their battery life estimates don't include viewing websites that have Flash. LMAO

Who would? Nobody does, because Flash murders all battery life and turns every machine into a roasting pile of garbage.

Good point

No, someone with absolutely no technical knowledge might imagine that as a good point. It's not.

Well to be fair - Macs don't ship with those because they have competing software.

HTML5

If you would have followed the coversation you would have read that is not only about Flash. Apple is taking mesures on Java as well.

This should be a seperate news item. This new direction by Apple is good. Vendors should support their own stuff such that we get timely updates and new features instead of having to wait on Apple. This was less a problem for Flash, but moreso one for Java.

While end-users are still free to install Flash on their machines, the removal of Flash as a standard component on the Mac serves to destroy the near ubiquity of Flash for the end user. This may further influence website owner's decisions to support HTML5 in addition to or instead of Flash over time.

That's extreme. It is not installed at shipment. It can be installed any time. The noise about it generated by Apple itself, alerts common users to be aware of the issue, and install it as desired.

If Apple has turned off past reminder code on Flash, and only Flash, that is a funny development.

Is that what you were also saying, Arn?

Stop making me agree, its annoying. :D

I'm interested to see what Oracle makes of its acquisition of sun. Though, I'm holding off most Oracle acquired technology until its future is a bit clearer and stabler. They seem to be stripping off the opensource fat ATM and keeping the stuff of value.

Java and OpenJDK only seem to be the only things set in stone so far, and Oracle seem to be interested in keeping Sun Servers going. (And optimizing for the hardware AKA Oracle Unbreakable Kernel)

In fact, the only thing stopping me from using Chrome is the scrolling issue. If they ever resolve that... well... Sorry Safari, it's not you, it's me.

What scrolling isue?

I'm a happy Chrome user on the mac. I've switched back and forth between Safari and Chrome not being able to decide which one is better.

I've now finally decided, Chrome gives an impression that it's faster, which is because of the way it creates seperate processes for each tab. I really makes it feel more snappy; especially on machines with less RAM (2GB or less).
My iMac has 8GB, so it just eats up anything. But my 2GB MBP tends to beach ball more with Safari.

Sorry arn, but these news are rubbish. I've done tons of windows installs, and none had flash pre-installed.

PMS... PMZ... same thing. Lay off the twinkies, stop smashin' the keyboard, and come up for air.

If you want to get technical - go at it... just stop PMS'n all over the board. Childsplay...

I think Apple wants the enduser to install Flash directly from the web, so the enduser gets the latest version.

Also, it saves them a lot of unnecessary support calls from endusers complaining that Safari runs slow (due to flash).

In reality, flash is not that bad. It is slow, but weighting what it's capable of doing, it's not that bad. The problem is that usually gets abused by developers.
There are websites where nearly every inch of each page has a flash applet.

One huge example from the past was: www.anandtech.com.
There was a point a while back when it was nearly impossible to browse their site due to the excessive use of flash. And that was while I was still using Windoze.
I see now their site doesn't have any flash in it anymore. I wonder why (?)...

So, as someone mentioned earlier, the hype this article is trying to create is kinda pointless.

You know what, SO WHAT? Flash has been and is dead for a while now. A user can take the time to download and install it if they wish.

Dan

Flash is dead? Is this the same way Blu-Ray is dead? Or the Kindle is dead? Stuff like that? Because I could swear it's very much alive....

Isn't Safari also supposed to use separate processes for each tab (or window)?
So far, when Safari crashed, it completely crashed!

If you want to install Adobe's bad internet video codec plugin thingy, you still can. ;)

I am not sure who is more butt hurt over flash, Jobs or apple fanboys. Unfortunately the apple kool-aid most fan boys drink actually makes the butt hurt even worse.

You must be capable of independent thought, instead of most users who blindly follow what the master says.

There is a story in slashdot about JVM as well, apple's port of JVM is deprecated. I think now we have to wait for Oracle to supply Java as well.
