Sure.

What apps running? - typically I have dozens of Safari tabs open (sometimes lots more - bad hygiene, I know), Word and/or Excel, Messages, Fantastical, Adobe Acrobat Pro and iTunes. Not a crushing load except that have 40, 60 or more tabs open can really burden both the CPU and memory, depending on what's open.

Both were, as I recall (it was a year ago), using about the same absolute amount of memory, rather than the same percent of fixed memory. So there appeared to be little benefit for me in going from 8gb to 16gb. YMMV, though.

I didn't notice any performance improvements. Again, YMMV.

That sure is a LOT of tabs :) and you say that you haven't noticed much difference between the 8GB and the 16GB Ram? if this is indeed the case i might not bother upgrading to the 16GB Ram option when i upgrade from my current 2011 MacBook Pro later this year.

Exactly what I'm thinking based on his experience. I was thinking 16gb might be the way to go if I get a MBP this year just because it feels like a minimum for a new computer in 2018 but now I'm reconsidering... I guess it wouldn't hurt to try the 8gb and see how much of the RAM I use. Trying to estimate for 5-7 years later is harder though. All I know is that my 4gb is not enough...

It was sad that Ming Kuo didn't say anything about the keyboard issues being resolved with new MacBooks, but he obviously doesn't know everything and he isn't a spokesperson for Apple.

It sounds more and more like Apple will keep the same design for the MacBook and use it for all their lower-model laptops this fall. The 13" rumor seems to have been ignored in this round.

I wonder if Apple will hold a Mac-unveil event to revamp the entire line (aside from Pro), or if this will be tacked onto the end of the iPhone reveal in September.

Heh shows what we know, looks like 32GB is a go.

Might only be 15 though, interesting to see what they went for.

I really can't believe that Apple would continue producing laptops with the same keyboard having started a replacement program just weeks ago. What I want to believe is that the reason for the delay is spending months on testing a keyboard that will not fail when a speck of dust flies in the air nearby.

New TB MacBook Pros out today.

No new non-TB MacBook Pros. No new iMacs. No new MacBooks. Yet.

My guess is the the non-TB MacBook Pros won't get updated until mid to late 2019. The iMacs will get updated fall 2018. As for the MacBooks, I'm not sure.

Only the 15". It doesn't use LP RAM. I wonder if they're counting on the power savings from the hex-core CPU with low impact usage to help out on the battery usage front.

I suspect Apple will switch the 15" back to LP RAM next year though (with LPDDR4x).

The new TB MacBook Pros have new keyboards, although there is no mention about whether or not it addresses the reliability issues. Luckily though my current 2017 MB is so far fine, and there is that extended MacBook keyboard warranty to fall back on. That makes me even more glad I didn't pay for that extended Apple Care warranty.

I was surprised that they updated the MacBook Pro’s today. To be honest i’m tempted to get a 13” MacBook Pro instead of waiting for the 12” MacBook, I was also surprised that they have put the True Tone in these new machines they seem to be bigger updates than I thought.

Go for it Dave! It looks two fold regarding the 12" MacBook - either it's going to get dropped/replaced by a new basic line 13" later this year OR will get updated next year with a new Apple chip but certainly no love from Apple on it yet for this year.

Personally, I feel that the 12" size is perfect and really hope that it can evolve.
[doublepost=1531416101][/doublepost]@Dave245 The UK pricing is horrific for the MacBook Pro. Just looked at the 13" TB with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD and it's over £2500!!! There's no way I could ever justify that, especially for something that is obsolete in 5 years. (It's near the price of a very sexy carbon fibre bicycle - Cervelo S3 :) :) :)

Loved the idea of 4TB on the 15" until I saw the option price - an extra £2800. I guess these product prices are paid by hugely rich companies and not the individual?

Oh well, when is that pre £1000 MacBook due? :) :) :)

I get a small discount so I can get one for around £2,377 (16GB ram and 1tb), it is a lot of money but so was my 2011 MacBook Pro at the time and that has lasted me since 2011, it’s been a great machine to be honest, easily the best laptop I’ve ever owned.

The sub £1000 MacBook is due around the fall I think, I just wonder if it will have the same display technology including the True Tone display. I’m really tempted to buy as soon as they are available for pick up in store but then on the other hand I could wait until the rumoured new MacBook is announced, I just don’t want to end up regretting my decision like I did with not upgrading to last years when I had the chance.

For some reason Apple didn’t announce any updates to the 12” MacBook in today’s press release, it makes me wonder why.

Have a look at this video Dave. Everything Apple Pro is my favourite Apple YouTuber, in fact the only one that I have time for. He mentions the MacBook in the video.

Really not convinced that the MacBook will get an upgraded screen this year Dave, more for when we see the new design in 2019 or 2020 but hey, don't wish your time away!
Put it this way, I LOVE the 12" design of my MacBook. The size is perfect. IF Apple dropped the 12" and size, then i'd go for the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar option. I actually really really like the TB - it gives a nice feel to the design.

The top line MacBook Pro 15" is insane isn't it. £7000 is not domestic market pricing BUT for the film company that spends 100K on a 8K Phantom camera, £7000 is quite a bargain for such a pro tool, I guess. Again, it's not something that you buy out of your own money - just like an expensive car etc, you buy it out of a business, not your own savings :)

I guess after today Dave, just enjoy this beautiful summer that we are having and then in the cold UK winter, say October decide on the MacBook of your choice as everything will be announced by then :) ...Enjoy that sunshine, I know that I am :) :) :)

I think we will still see the updated MacBook this fall but the fact that the non-TB MacBook Pro wasn't updated suggests that it may be discontinued (finally dropped in 2019) as apple forces people to move to either the macbook or the MacBook Pro touchbar ones.

Too true, I wonder if the fact that it has not been updated is an indication of what is coming in a few weeks time.........

There won't be anything coming in the next few weeks, around October time though... maybe

Yes, that's what I mean :) When I say week, I mean 12 weeks or so :) I'm not excited as I'm more happy that it's summer, so my gosh, I'm not wishing for autumn or winter (although i'll escape it in October & November :)

Agreed. I think the new rumored "13-inch" MB will be essentially a 13 or 14" Air with a Retina screen, which is pretty much what a lot of folks have been clamoring about for some time. Whether it is fanless is anyone's guess. Probably not if it is a true gap-filler between the 12" ultra-portable MB and the 13" Pro. Anyway, the absence of an update today is telling.

I bought a 8gb 2017 MB 3 months ago. I run short of RAM every few days or so, and I need to 'quit all apps' and start again. I also had decided to give this a shot., I am upgrading my wifes too, so the plan was, and is now, to give her the 8gb and get a 16gb for myself. She anyway dislikes 'clutter' and never has much open at a time. She is currently manah=ging 'just about] on a 2011 4gb AIr, so 8gb will be fine for her.

There are no 8th generation CPUs for the nTB available yet from Intel. I have no idea when they might be released, someone else may know.

But yeah, it’s possible the nTB is EOL. There are rumors of a new 13” but nobody really knows.

I haven been following this thread, but are there rumours on a 13"/15" MacBook?

No rumours on 15" MacBook, that wouldn't even make sense, cos MacBook is about portability. There is a rumour about the 13" inch one, but it is most likely to replace the Air as a low end notebook. The 12" MacBook is here to stay and should get a spec bump later on in the year...

That’s a good video, he’s a great Youtuber along with Rene Ritchie and iJustine. The MacBook seems to be getting a spec update later this year, nothing about the screen tho, as a writer the True Tone display would be great to have.

I really don’t want to be in a situation where I just keep waiting and waiting, I will give it until October of this year at the latest to see what is announced in line with the 12” MacBook but also the new rumoured low cost Macboook, but I’m not holding much hope that they will get the True Tone or screens that are as good as the ones on these new MacBook Pro’s.

I agree with you pricing is a lot, for me personally tho it’s an investment just like my 2011 MacBook Pro was, which to be fair paid for itself over and over, it saw me through university (3 years) and I’ve written a number of different things on it along with my favourite app Final Draft if I can get the same out of a new MacBook or MacBook Pro then I don’t mind spending the money (some of which I might be able to get back through tax anyway).

I often spend a lot of time either in front of my Mac or a friends (if I’m collaborating or helping with editing). I also wouldn’t mind being able to play games such as the Sims 4 during any spare time, but that obviously isn’t a major priority (it only leads to procrastination.)

How does the M3 w/ 8GB perform?
Quite well, in terms of CPU performance.

To be fair the 13” quad core is tempting it’s a lot more powerful and won’t cost much more than a maxed out 12” MacBook once I add the discount I get.
[doublepost=1531506904][/doublepost]

Are there any benchmarks for the 13” Quad core and the 6 core 15” be interesting to see how they score especially compared to my old 2011.
