To me that sounds more like they are perhaps shipping out a few samples of 10nm chips for testing purposes, rather than beginning to ship out finished silicon. Hopefully the 10nm node will be worth the wait, but at least Intel are going to get it right, not rush it to market.

This. Totally disappointing, as everyone in the business has mentioned. Then again, it's not certain what is going on as that Intel rep was so shell shocked from the bug issues, who knows what is what (that's my take on this at least).

But almost certainly the sample theory is accurate as they would have tried ANYTHING to boost moral. So this whole thing is depressing. But time will tell :)

Maybe Apple is going to use there own chips.

I was so close to pulling the trigger on a refurb today, but decided to check the 'Buyers Guide' to see if there is an news. Lo and behold, the status went from 'Neutral' to 'Caution'. I realize that this could be automated based upon the number of days in the product cycle and past announcements, but I'm taking it as a sign and going to wait...for now.

It's likely there will be an update at some point this year (probably mid 2018) with Intel 10nm Cannon Lake. What else Apple would change is anyones guess. But personally I think we will see LPDDR4, DCI-P3 display and perhaps an updated wireless chip with Bluetooth 5, perhaps even a slightly bump in battery Wh. Again, this is pure speculation but I think these are all reasonable assumptions.

Apple above all else bump up the battery the Wh make all the diff. Like even 3Wh could be 30min-1 hour of extra use depending on the task.

A few Wh's extra capacity coupled with LPDDR4, 10nm chips and possibly more power efficient 802.11ax + Bluetooth 5 could easily see an extra hour of battery life. Personally there's a lot of small incremental improvements Apple could make to the MacBook that could have an overall big improvement.

Sure, but likely to be out soon, or should I buy one now?

At this point do we expect a June date for big updates like it got last year with the power boost? Or should someone waiting to buy expect a longer wait? I want to buy upon next update but not get screwed in 6 months or something

Wait till WWDC to be safe. It’ll either be refreshed there or fall.

Bought the same one just about a month ago because b&h photo had a sale... I'm loving mine and wish I had purchased one sooner. Such a great machine.

I've seen lots of contradicting theories on whether or not specs will be updated this year. Of, course selfishly I hope they do not since I just bought one.

I really don't think they will change the form factor at all for at least 2+ years since they just released a $150 leather case for it in November and 4-5 years seems to be their computer hardware refresh period.
Apple likes to sell accessories, but they aren't big enough jerks to have one for a product that will only work for 8 months.

The form factor is still praised 2 years after it's release, because it is amazing...

(Things I want in the next MacBook: no or smaller bezels, 500 nits and color matching the pro screen, another usb c port and make em thunderbolt 3. that would be awesome, sure a better camera and FaceID or touchID would be great, but those don't matter as much to me.)
I’m wondering if they’re going to put the P3 wide color in this year’s version.

Would have picked one up last year had they done it.

I've been looking around some more and it seems some of the PC geeks out in internetland are not really optimistic that Y series updates are going to show up any time soon. Many seem to think that the next Y update will be 10 nm chips, but that could be a ways off for Y.

Then again, Apple could always ask for semi-custom chips, although to be honest I'm not sure that would be needed. If there is going to be a delay for a significant Y update, Apple could simply wait like everyone else.

So a 2018 update might not happen?

I’d like to think they can get more power with some existing chipset they could select or customize, and upgrade the screen color gamut and FaceTime camera in 2018. I’m desperate to give Apple my money for an update of this computer.

It’s going to happen, iNtel is just being odd about product roadmaps and launches this year. We will see intel say something closer to May-June timeframe if I had to guess.

There's precedent for an update not changing the chip (MBP 15" 2014->2015 kept Haswell chips as the Broadwell parts were quite badly delayed) But for the MB there's not even a discrete GPU to change, and it already has a Force touch trackpad. Possibly they will just cut the price when they update everything else?

If real, this 1.1 GHz Cannon Lake Y chip is probably the entry level and perhaps not the one Apple would use, but nonetheless, it doesn’t seem too impressive, despite being 10 nm (with LPDDR4).

Apple overclocks the ones in the MacBook I think I remember hearing?

Yes, by 0.1 GHz, but with a higher TDP. Cannon Lake may already have a slightly higher TDP to begin with though.

7Y30 1.0 GHz <— Apple doesn’t use this
7Y32 1.1 GHz <— Apple uses this at 1.2

So perhaps 2018 will look like this?

8Y30 1.1 GHz <— Apple doesn’t use this
8Y32 1.2 GHz <— Apple uses this at 1.3

The key point here is these are dual-core. As expected, no quad-core in sight for 2018.

Perhaps, do you know the TDP up they use? Intel page says it can be up to 7W.
I don't think there was ever any question of Quad Y chips?

If Intel manages to actually ship Apple Cannon Lake this year lake i'll be one happy camper. And upgraded MacBook with this would get me to an Apple store on release day with that familiar elevated heart rate.

I love that :)

I was in the market for a new MacBook in 2015, but ended up waiting until 2017 for Kaby Lake Y and its upgraded media features (HEVC and 4K and DRM). Plus I hated the keyboard of the 2015 (and the CPU of the 2015 seemed a bit lethargic too).

If I were in the market today, I think I might wait for Ice Lake Y in 2019, mainly for Thunderbolt, but a possible quad core would also be a nice bonus.

However, I have the luxury of being able to wait based on sketchy rumours, since my main machine is an iMac, and I always have other Mac laptops to fall back on anyway.

I don’t have the patience to wait until 2019 even though I can
