I expect Apple to be pretty competitive on the processors. If I recall they used fairly high-end processors before the new chipset in 2008.

The other components, however, are where there has traditionally been reason for concern.

Bearing in mind Apple sets the standards for music devices as they sell most of them I doubt it.

Actually probably not. Yes Apple sells more music players but most will be plugged into windows computers and not necessarily Macs. If PCs push USB3, then I am sure Apple would follow. After all, Apple started with Firewire on their iPods and now that is gone and replaced with USB because PCs has USB and not Firewire...

Well SOMTHING'S amiss with Intel

*****UPDATE*****

Seems they have pulled the promotion on their Retail Edge site.
The links just gone.

Either they were on the money and got a lovely notice by Apple to remove it. Or they were lazy and assumed they had the latest processors...

Either way, Steve's not pleased.

I don't have any faith in Apple to use any of the new processors in the MBP's, I can see Apple sticking with Core 2 Duo for.... ever. How many times did everyone excpet something new only to be stuck with C2D?

Never. Aside from Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo has been the best mobile processor from Intel until now. Like the Core i5/i7 Quad, the Core 2 Quad generates too much heat for anyone to have expected Apple to use it in their notebooks. Obviously the Core 2 Duo has been updated many times, but it wasn't superseded until this past January 7, and Apple has been fairly on top of updates anyway.

This was actually my first thought when I read this. What if all this hype over the tablet announcement was for nothing but the MBP refresh? With all the tablet info "leaked" so far (albeit mostly contradictory), it'd be kind of funny to watch people go ape**** if there was no tablet info at this media event.

What if the MBP (or MacBoo Air) IS the tablet... a nice touch screen, etc.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good graphics option in the refresh.
also, I always thought it would be nice to get a better dedicated sound chip. I know Apple & Creative aren't exactly best buddies, but I'd love to see one of their chips on board.

If Apple go with the Intel option for the 13" Macbook Pro Gfx, the device will be a step back compared to all Macbook 13"'s with Nvidia 9400 chips.

I would like apple to gives us the option to drop the DVD drive like they did with the mac mini in exchange for a another Hardisk, bigger battery or the holy grail to utilise the space for a Powerhouse gfx card.

I'm still deciding wether to get an i5/i7 iMac or one of the new MacBook Pros for University if they have the rumoured parts. Im going to live on campus so a laptop isn't really necessary...

A Laptop is rarely necessary, but it can be extremely useful. I highly recommend going with a new MacBook Pro.

Same here.

But also consider: how much traveling will you be doing back & forth to home, will that be via public transit or your own car, does your University have a great library that you might want to work in? How prevalent are group projects and study groups? WIll you have a TV in your room - or will this be it? Apt to spend time at a significant others place?

I can't imagine NOT having a laptop for college these days, but i also was the only one with a computer in my apartment "way back when". I had a MacSE with MacLuggage and it went home with me, or to a friends, but obviously never to the library! LOL!!

Best of luck in your studies!

Most people who know Tech know USB3 devices and laptops are here.

However, the fact Intel has publicly announced their chipsets supporting USB3 won't be out untill 2011
Linky

And the fact Intel has denied allowing Nvidia to build chipsets for their new i series,
Meaning either using another component (which apple won't do) OR as it seems on that link you provided building a custom part (which again, they won't do)

Add on top of that Apple push for lightpeak, I just can't fathom a USB 3 port appearing on this year range.

While I agree that we most likely, IMO won't see it, that doesn't mean that it can't happen. My opinion, of course...

I have a crystal Ball. Every time i shake it and peer into the future it comes back with a firm No.

Now if i can't trust my crystal ball, what can i trust? Politicians??

Has the world gone mad!

You spec junkies are nuts.

In day to day use, you're not going to see or feel any difference between a current MBP 2.8 and the new ones coming out at the end of the month.

When you're rendering video, okay sure. But most of the time? Not a chance.

To read these threads, one would think that a current MBP is just going to be slow and obsolete once the i5 and i7 change the world.

I heard the same song and dance regarding the upgrade to Mac Pros in 2009 that was going to make me wish that I hadn't bought an early 2008 octo. Now I see people wishing they hadn't waited and wondering where they can pick up a 2008.

The new CPU, boards and chipsets will come with their own unexpected problems whereas the current MBPs are pretty much fault free. I could return my new 17" tomorrow with no restocking fee...but I won't.

Turbo Boost alone is worth it. I wouldn't settle for anything less than the Core i5.

Indeed. Core i5 and dedicated graphics in the 13" and I'll bite.
I can't seem to find the review I've quoted before but the dynamic frequency scaling given the load makes the computer even more responsive.

Moving from a Q6600 to a Core i5 750 it does feel a lot more perky on the same hard drive and video card. TMonitor is something fun to watch.

Oh good, just in time. The PowerBook G4 is dying.

Hurry it up, good sirs.

That's funny, I'm in the same exact boat.

Now I'm only hoping that either
1) The tablet is very compelling, and I'd just as soon have an MBP anyway
2) The tablet is really cheap and I can get both

:D

aww, sounds like the bad intel graphics are headed for the MBP.

Unless they decide to go with dedicated graphics across the board. If they can pull it off without hurting their bottom line, they just might try, because it could be a big selling point.

I know, it's unlikely, but it's still remotely possible at least.
