Alternatives to MBP - (Answer)
Howdy folks- I decided to join so that I could post and hopefully add some value to some folks that were on the fence about waiting and possibly considering going "across the street" to PC-land. Like many (ok, all) of you, I've been eagerly anticipating the release of the new MBP lineup, but have not had the best discipline in waiting while not buying anything else. I have clearly strayed a few times, and have visited many of the major notebook lines. Let me share with you what I've learned so far, which is the reason why my current XPS 1647 is going back and that I've landed a spot on Amazon & Best Buy's most wanted list for habitual returners.
Where I started...
Acer Aspire AS6930 16" C2D (2GHz), 320GB, 4GB, 9600M, 720p - Great laptop, had for almost a year, had a Blu-Ray drive, screen resolution wasn't all that it was cracked-up to be, but ultimately decided that it was too big. eBay Time!
Then decided to buy...
Asus N81Vp-D2 14" C2D (2.8GHz), 320GB, 4GB, 4650, 720p - Great performer laptop, however the keyboard was absolutely horrible, loose and spongy. Kept it too long since I was traveling for work, eBay Time!
Then decided to buy...
Asus UL30Vt-A1 13" C2D (1.3->1.7GHz ULV), 500GB, 4GB, 210m, 720p - Battery life was phenomenal!! Keyboard was much-improved, however couldn't play most of my games worth a crap due to the graphics card not being a contender. Back to Amazon!
Then decided to buy...
Macbook Pro 13" C2D (2.26GHz), 160GB, 2GB, 9400M, (MB990LL/A) - The best built laptop I've ever seen, beautiful. My very first Mac. Loved the OS. Bootcamp worked perfectly. Was about to divorce my wife and marry this laptop when I got so frustrated that it wouldn't play my games worth a crap. Decided that I would return it... Back to Best Buy!
Then decided to buy...
Asus N61JQ-X1 16" i7 (1.6->2.8GHz), 320GB, 4GB, 5730, 720p - Good laptop, well put together, fastest laptop I've ever owned. Great keyboard. Ran games like a champ. Then I decided that it was too big, and that it was very "been there, done that" for Windows. Microcenter wanted to charge me a restocking fee... Oh well, put on eBay!
Then decided to buy...
Alienware M11x 11" C2D (1.3->1.7GHz ULV), 250GB, 4GB, 335m, 720p - A beefy machine, convinced me that processors are becoming less and less critical to computers these days and that most of the action is happening in the GPU. Heavy for size, but after initial shock wore off I realized that the lid/screen was warped and wouldn't close squarely (keep in mind it hadn't moved from where I had placed it upon taking it out of the box) and the feet were also not level so the laptop would wobble. Oh well, returned this many, back to Dell with you!
Then decided to buy...
Dell XPS Studio 1647 15.6" i5-430m, 500GB, 4GB, 4670, 720p - My current laptop. Blazing fast games, not as bulky as the larger Asus and Acer were, better performer than the ULV's, has nice keyboard (backlit!), relatively little crapware, and no problems really to speak of yet-- EXCEPT that it's not a Mac. Best Buy should be expecting me to grace their doorstep anytime now.
I've learned a few things from this process.. Especially for the PC guys. First, if you're having the same issues buying/returning things that I am, you should probably go talk to someone. I would, but my health plan doesn't cover it and my wife just thinks I'm crazy. Second, I have yet to come across anything with the quality and craftsmanship of an Apple. Third, if you have a desktop or whatever with Windows 7, that's great-- but I also found out that it is just downright fun to explore a new operating system (ie- OSX). On top of that, bootcamp the thing and you have Windows 7/Vista/etc right there.
Hopefully the new iteration of MBP's will have a decent GPU. That's all I'm praying for from the Steve Jobs Gods. i5/i7 would be great, and definitely have their uses, but since I'm a heavy gamer that also has discovered this great world of Mac, I would be in absolute heaven having item item with the superior craftsmanship of a Mac, the fun and adventure that comes with having a different OS, a dedicated beefy GPU (PLEASE Optimus) that is not "vintage 2007" that we're trying to "clear outta the warehouse", and please also put said beefy GPU in the base model 13" MBP... Just think of the market that Apple would open for themselves... I know... method to their madness, and hey-- it's working, so I guess we can't fault them.
So bottom line to my rant--- wait and see what happens NEXT Tuesday... and probably the Tuesday after that... or at the very least, buy from a merc with a decent return policy and hope that your wife, or whoever you answer to, has a sense of humor about the whole thing.
