Manners Please (and Don't Misrepresent Me, Either)
[
First, no one corrected me. No one stated in that thread that 800MHz memory is available for laptops, although it obviously is (now). I don't think anyone knew or stated that there was 800MHz memory available for laptops on June 1, but other posters also inquired about this. Much of the speculation revolved around the fact that other OEMs did not/were not/are not offering laptops with 800MHz memory. This has not changed yet. AidenShaw did mention the cost of 2GiB [RAM sticks], and I suggested that it was practically unaffordable.
Besides, you're not knowledgeable about who buys these Apple laptops to speculate about what the market is for 4GB of 800Mhz SODIMM, Crucial is a 'name' brand so it's going to cost a bit more, Apple will charge you even more> btw. price has already dropped to $265 per 2GB module for the Crucial at their site. Soon as the SR PC laptops ship in numbers, I'll bet the price will drop some more (PC side being the driving economic force) in the next few months. So stop whining, and stop promoting false info.

I am glad the prices have dropped, but the initial prices were fairly steep. I suggested in partthat the increase to 800MHz RAM might not happen because of its cost.
Cite you authority for the fact that the mem. controller in SR will not support 800Mhz DDR2 SODIMM's, it makes no sense to up the FSB to support running at 800Mhz if there will be no memory supported to take advantage of it...think man, think! Doh.
Perhaps you have never had the privilege of dealing with an OEM other than Apple?!?! One example: Some years ago, I ordered a Dell Inspiron 6000 of which I eventually refused to receive from UPS because I later found out when I tried to order memory for it from Crucial that the laptop only supported 400MHz DDR-2 RAM even though Dell advertised it as a 533MHz FSB. I have a list of customer service codes from Dell concerning my complaint and filed complaints with the BBB, State Attorney General, and other relevant agencies. (Sorry, right now my folder from the incident is packed in a box in preparation for my upcoming move.) The Customer Service Manager eventually admitted that the tech department confirmed that although the P-M had a FSB of 533MHz, there was a memory controller that limited the throughput to 400MHz. The problem with Dell was that they nowhere informed the customer of this problem and the outcry became so loud that they closed the online forums. This was before or around the time of Apple's Intel switch. I have always wondered if Apple might pull a similar stunt--all other PC OEMs do. BTW, I apologize, but I did not bookmark the page of that source, but see below.
gfx card??? Huh, this ain't no Mac Pro, there is no gamer card, the MBP has a non-removable GPU at present, and for the near future-no 'card'.
Ok, my mistake. I was tired when I wrote it.
As much needed updated GPU, 2.4Ghz CPU,
Umm, non-sequitur; please cite your sources to support this contorted logic, lol!
Well, it is well known, if you read anandtech.com or any other PC site which is not a rumor-mill, that Penryn may not be backwards compatible. Most discussions concern desktop motherboards so there is a bit of speculation here. However, so that you may see for yourself, the quote below is from an April 16 article entitled, "
Intel Developer Forum-Beijing 2007: Penryn and Intel's High End GPU":
"Finally, with regards to motherboard support, Intel isn’t making any guarantees about Penryn’s backwards compatibility. While Penryn will still use the LGA-775 socket that Prescott and Conroe have used, motherboard support will require more than just the presence of the socket. If the appropriate VRM spec is implemented, then Penryn will work on your LGA-775 motherboard, the problem is that motherboard manufacturers haven’t yet released information on which of their boards will support the Penryn VRM changes. If history repeats itself, you can expect very limited official support for Penryn in currently shipping motherboards and guaranteed support with boards based on Intel’s new 3 series chipsets (e.g. P35). We did see Penryn up and running on an Intel BadAxe2 board, but it had a hardware VRM modification done to it in order to properly support Penryn. Penryn may also be able to work on boards without a VRM mod, however at increased (potentially out-of-spec) voltage settings."
In light of the fact that there is no specific discussion of mobile motherboards, I will concede the reason for the SR chipset revision may not be because of socket compatibility with Penryn. However, consider the following quote from
another article, as well:
"In the first half of 2008, Santa Rosa will get a refresh to support mobile Penryn processors. Currently Intel is only indicating updated processor support with the Santa Rosa refresh; the rest of the components may remain unchanged."
Does this indicate a change in the memory controller?
Cite your source for the proposition that laptops have to go to SR to use higher frequency Meroms. Are you telling us aftermarket upgrade companies like Daystar will never have 2.6Ghz Meroms running as an upgrade service they provide (authorized Apple service center) in older 1st gen 2GHz MBP's?
I never said anything about aftermarket companies. I only spoke about what Apple would ship as an OEM because I was speaking within the scope of the discussion. That said, I believe that this has been covered thoroughly in PC sites. Intel is capping the first generation of Merom chips at 2.[33]GHz. [Edit: I think Apple will use the same chipset for all MBPs so they must use the new chipset.] The new chips that Apple will put in the MBP will likely be the second generation of Merom chips running at 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz. Like I said, there are many architectural changes that were made in the revision that will be more productive than ramping up the clock speeds. Thus the speed difference between the MB and MBP will be greater than what the GHz makes it appear, and Apple will be forced to use SR to utilize 2.4 GHz chips. Just don't act all surprised if the FSB is still only 667MHz.
Pretty good 'guess', lol, that 2.4Ghz Merom will be in the updated MBP, since Apple is once again behind the PC world in annoucing, we already know 2.4Ghz is current top speed they are available in (though if the heat could be managed, July is speculated to be the release of the user over-clockable mobile x7700 @stock of 2.6Ghz for July? As a top end model, though, considering you wouldn't be buying 4GB of RAM for you non-intensive, no pro apps uses, you wouldn't want the minor extra speed from 2.6Ghz CPU.
The top speed of 2.4GHz has been known a lot longer than you apparently realize. Intel's future roadmaps have been out for a while and their speeds and prices were leaked as well. Also, I do appreciate, but don't need, the extra speed from a 2.6GHz CPU. However, I highly doubt (but would rejoice if ever) Apple would include an overclockable chip in one of its laptops. Apple is a 'control' company--not for overclockers.
Combine 800Mhz memory, FSB, 2.6Ghz CPU, Nvidia 8400M? that alone would be a bigger upgrade than a LED backlit LCD, IMHO. Would be nice to get the 200GB Hitachi 7.2k HD, I'd take the recently announced 64GB 1.8in Samsung SSD as an option any day though, faster still.
How can you include the 2.6GHz CPU in your upcoming projection when it won't be available until July???
Your projections would be nice, but I'm afraid you will be vastly disappointed until the imminent hardware refresh following Leopard.
Next year even faster 256GB SSD's, that no magnetic recording HD can touch in performance, will be the hot ticket for those who can afford them.
Intel mobile Core 2 Extreme, price cuts leaked
Intel Mobile CPU Price Cut In Sep
Core 2 Duo T7800 @ 2.6Ghz, maybe the next updated MBP in Sept. with
2k res screens....finally, which would ship around the same time Leopard is released. MBP will almost certainly be revised at least one more time before any Penryn systems are on the horizon.
I don't think this will happen until Oct/Nov or perhaps even Jan., but you are right, they will be nice systems if your wish comes true.
