Yea

Why not 160GB at 7200RPM, because Seagate has had one for some time and it's not too expensive...

That'd be even better! But I have no clue, all I know is, they should give us better options. cause the only one that goes 7200 is a 100 GB which is way too small for me. Externals externals externals.

Contrary to what seems to be the prevailing opinion, I think we'll see a significant update of the MBP's. From a broad perspective, Leopard was originally targeted for release at WWDC and hardware revisions were likely in place to accompany those revisions in order to take full advantage of Leopard and vice versa. There's really no reason to hold up that hardware to wait on the final release of Leopard - indeed, for all intents and purposes, the wraps are still coming off of Leopard at WWDC.

Furthermore, do you really see Jobs introducing the next gen operating system on a lightly refreshed platform? Envision Jobs walking around telling us about the new Leopard and then going over to a newly redesigned MBP and booting it up from flash memory in a few seconds instead of minutes. I think he shows us Leopard running on a MBP - and that MBP has all the goodies - maybe a redesign, but definitely the led screen, robson, better gpu, etc. I think iMac gets the same treatment. The goal here is to show us that Apple is going to open up a can of Vista/PC whup'ass and that Apple - despite dropping "Computer" from its name - has not forgotten the computing side of its business.

Yes I did; I used it to buy my current PowerBook with a 20% discount and received a year of developer DVD's, including free Tiger DVD's. So if you get it now you will receive Leopard DVD's for free as well :)

Now that sounds like a nice deal :) I appreciate the info!! I get 18% off through my employer but that sounds even better.

So what you are saying is the mobile versions of the 8600 and 2600 GPU's are shipping?

So they are shipping in limited numbers. Apple to my knowledge never ship a high volume product like the MBP with a limited supply part. Apple like to be able to ship next day. This is why we have waited so long for the Santa Rosa update. We could have had it close a month ago (May 9th). Supply was to limited then.

From my observation it seems that Apple is a pioneer when it comes to new hardware. Take for instance the Intel Core Duo. It was very fresh when announced back at the beginning of '06, yet it was placed in the iMac and the MBP. I also don't think that the new GPUs are in as limited supply as most other PC laptop manufacturers would lead us to think. Most companies like HP that are offering Santa Rosa are including the GMA X3100 because it's built-in, it finally has Hardware Transform and Lighting (making it a significant upgrade to GMA 950), and most of their customers don't buy their laptops for high-performance apps/gaming, but if you look at companies that offer performance laptops in the $2000 range (such as Acer), they are either using the 8600M or the HD 2600XT. I wouldn't expect Apple to put anything higher than one of these two cards in the MBP (mostly because of size and heat, possibly cost as well), but either would be a great improvement over the X1600 not only in terms of performance, but also power consumption and heat reduction (65nm).

That said, if Apple keeps the X1600 I won't be buying a MBP.

I think Apple is painting themselves into a corner and need to update MBPs more than lightly. The MacBooks now perform at equivalent levels (see recent perf tests). The BlackBook comes with a larger hard drive than a MBP.

The iMacs are receiving a significant upgrade according to all sources. I don't think they can leave the MBP totally open to criticism that its on par with or behind the low-end Macbooks and consumer desktop iMacs.

I don't think the new MBPs will have touch screens, certainly not quad GPUs or anything of that sort, but contrary to some naysayers above it will be more than the MacBook refresh. I expect SR, HD bump, newer GPU, most likely nearly the same case, probably LED LCDs.

Advice Please

The timing of this release is good for me. I am the only Mac guy in my firm (since 1988 & currently on 15" PB G4) and our installation division now needs a Mac to set up home networks running on Macs. I am due for an upgrade and will pass my current PBG4 on them. I admit that I don't have a ton of time here. They need a unit ASAP so if the release is tomorrow that would be great. I also have time this week to get the new machine up and loaded with software, etc. I am looking at either a new MBP17 or MBP15 (with largest hard-drive they can include).

1) The key question is where best to buy. So many posts reference on-line (Mac Store) ordering. I can live with that but there is a Mac Store nearby but would they have the new machines tomorrow morning? Would it be better to just walk in?

2) Also, if Apple does announce an update on the 5th, will that be 12:01am EDT or in the morning hours?

3) I would love the 17" because I use my Mac as a desktop. However, I also fly often and wonder from those out there, is it much harder to open a 17" on in a typical coach seat than the 15" (which sometimes gets tight when the seat in front of you reclines)?

Thanks to all.

If you're looking to order the largest possible hard-drive size [as I am], then you're much better off ordering online. They don't stock custom-configs at Apple Stores/resellers, and therefore you'll save yourself the hassle of having to walk in and explain the config to them: doing it online is much more efficient.

Well you'll get your machine quicker if you go to the apple store. They'll have all of the stock models to choose from and they'll configure your computer pretty much however you want too... upgrading a stock model. You'll probably have to wait an hour for them to do it but it's better that a few days right? I guess it also depends on what kind of crazy MBP they're actually releasing... we'll see.

I'm also counting on a GPU upgrade before I buy this...having not owned a mac since the beige G3, it's a big deal for me. But if we get another bump like the tuesday a couple weeks ago, I (and most of you) will be

no more refurbs

Here's a thought about the possibility of something new tomorrow: all of the MacBook and MacBook Pro selections are gone on the Refrubished Mac store. I've been watching the site and waiting to get a grad gift for my senior. Every day it has had some selections. Some days there have been a dozen or so and there is always something, but all day the MacBook and MacBook Pro section has been empty. Are they gearing up for something??? :apple:

I haven't know any Apple store to upgrade the hard drives on their laptops; RAM yes [though you're better off doing it yourself; significantly cheaper], hard drives no, due to the tools & parts required.

Forgive me for not reading through the previous 17 pages; the answer to my question has probably already been answered.

Update: There is some speculation that Apple may be releasing MacBook Pros next week rather than at WWDC to coincide with their Educational Back to School Program which launches next week. (If Apple waited until WWDC, the MacBook Pro specs would change a week into the Back to School promotion.)

Was the Back to School promotion launching this week just speculation or was it confirmed somewhere? My brother was hoping to get a MacBook today, but I see nothing of the promotion.

You really aught to be more open to what other people are saying (other people know a little something about this as well). DX10 parts ARE ready to ship volume. Every laptop with the new cards is slated to ship EARLY June as in NOW. you can already buy mobile 8600 GTs, HD 2300, HD 2500, and 8600
GSs if you want a PC and you can buy them in very nice computers for less than the MBP. If apple doesn't update, they are going to lose business, plain and simple. The biggest differences between the regular macbook and the pro are the screen size and the GPU and at the moment the GPU difference is not compelling for the enormous price difference (almost a $1000 for a reasonable config).

unless of course you don't game. then it doesn't matter. in 4 years i played one 3D game for about 20 min on my PB G4. with that amount of gaming i think the money for a better GPU would be wasted:p
We've been over this several times already...

The GMA950 stalls for Quartz Composer, Exposé, and the Dashboard.

I've noticed that both the existence of lots of refurbs and the lack of refurbs for sale on store.apple.com have both been cited as evidence as something upcoming. I think its just the ebb & flow.

I did find the redesign of the refurb/outlet store to be interesting though.

That Dell computer has some sweet specs -- if the updated MBP were that highly spec'd it would exceed my expectations.

It has been a while, 202/5 days since the last MBP update, and usually it is around 180/7 days every update, they are up to something big(I hope).
Here is my guess, Lets see:

Santa Rosa
LED Backlit screens
Leopard beta shipped with every MB/MBP/Mac computer, along with a coupon for leopard (full version).
Bigger HD - 200gb., 7200 rpm, or flash
keeping with the affordable price idea, last year the computers were compared with dell computers setup, lower prices. I think that they will compare a Macbook Pro with the baby we just saw above, and they will top its features, but for a more affordable price
14.4 in. MBP
New case for Macbook(Pro)s'
Lets hope the iPhone isnt the biggest focus

I am probably wrong about most of this, I know it.
