ok..time to place bets, less then 24 hours to go, now it's getting exciting.
the 17" remains, gets a nice update, No LED, that's clear by now. There will be only one 15" left, the high end will be updated LED and Santa Rosa (I hope) the low-end is out. That's it for tuesday. Then next monday will be a Leopard presentation using a brand new 13" MBP. Here Steve can show Leopard and a Greener Apple. Probably he'll mention the (hopefully) tuesday update.

Here's my (educated) guess. ;)

High-end 17" gets a screen update to a high-res LED screen (1900x1200) with an option or standard config including the nvidia 8600M GPU. I'm not gonna make random guesses about the lower end models because I haven't heard anything personally about them, but I doubt they want to go down to a 13" MBP. And this all rolls out sometime tomorrow.

Contrary to what seems to be the prevailing opinion, I think we'll see a significant update of the MBP's. From a broad perspective, Leopard was originally targeted for release at WWDC and hardware revisions were likely in place to accompany those revisions in order to take full advantage of Leopard and vice versa. There's really no reason to hold up that hardware to wait on the final release of Leopard - indeed, for all intents and purposes, the wraps are still coming off of Leopard at WWDC.

Furthermore, do you really see Jobs introducing the next gen operating system on a lightly refreshed platform? Envision Jobs walking around telling us about the new Leopard and then going over to a newly redesigned MBP and booting it up from flash memory in a few seconds instead of minutes. I think he shows us Leopard running on a MBP - and that MBP has all the goodies - maybe a redesign, but definitely the led screen, robson, better gpu, etc. I think iMac gets the same treatment. The goal here is to show us that Apple is going to open up a can of Vista/PC whup'ass and that Apple - despite dropping "Computer" from its name - has not forgotten the computing side of its business.

While that's pure speculation, I could see the logic behind it.

It's not like they decided 45 days ago "Hey, let's jack with people minds and update the MBP."

So, in theory at least, I could see this revision being the one that would have coincided with what would have been a June 11th release of Leopard.

Not to say it's right, but the logic is plausible.

You really think they will do NOTHING to the low-end 15"??? Leaving it several hundred dollars more than the high end macbook but no better for another year? I find that hard to believe...

The OP was speculating that the low-end 15" would be discontinued, and replaced by a smaller form-factor. 12", 13", whatever. (Note: speculating)

I love it when newbies sign up to post their insider info. :)

Yep. And all the bright eyes they get, wondering what, if, when, and how. he he he

Guess we'll see what goes down in about 14 1/2 hours. If it goes down, that is.

By out I think he means phased out :)
That would be strange but sounds like what he's saying.

I think it would be crazy for Apple to have only one 15" option, especially if that one option is over $2000. I think the low-end MBP needs to be dropped in price a couple hundred as it is.

Yes, that would make sense.
They're hardly going to delay hardware for the OS.

pc to mac

im set on switching from a pc to a mac when this mbp update occurs, but i dont know what to do about transfering my files (i.e. countless documents and 4500+ songs) to the mac.

is there an efficient way to conduct this transfer (besides, for example, transferring one gb at a time with a flash drive)?

Use an ethernet cable to make a network.
Or if you have an iPod, load as much as possible onto it (in Disk Mode).

I'd think a simple bridge connection between the two would be simplest. Just take a normal Ethernet cable, connect the two machines, and set up a bridge connection between the two. Should be pretty fast to transfer the files over.

I guess my old macbook 2.0 core duo is out of date and should be junked. Not!

Oh dear god the 12 hour mark is about upon us!!!

Okay so I just got done talking with Apple Support. Here is some questions I asked them and the answers I got. If this post is to long or annoys you let me know and I'lll cut it. lol

* You are chatting with David W, an Apple Expert
*
Hi, my name is David W. Welcome to Apple!
*
David W: How may I help you today?
*
You: I have a couple questions for you.
*
David W: Sure thing!
*
You: Okay so number 1. I realize you can't comment on if a new MacBook Pro will be released tommarrow, but I have a question concerning shipping turn times.
*
You: Lets say you put out a new MacBook Pro tomarrow, and I order mine (finally). How long will it take to ship.
*
David W: Sure thing.
*
You: Because I have to leave on a week long trip and I HAVE TO HAVE IT BY THEN
*
You: I leave on June 24th
*
You: So lets say, you release a product tomarrow ;). I order tomarrow ;) will I see it before I leave?
*
David W: I'm confident that you will have it before you leave.
*
David W: Even with new product launches typically they begin shipping within a few days of launch, unless otherwise specified.
*
You: Do you know roughly what the turn around time is on a new product?
*
You: Okay
*
You: #2
*
You: Do you have a option of 24 hour shipping?
*
David W: On some orders, yes we can offer overnight shipping. Typically though its available only on accessories and not our computers or iPods.
*
You: What is your fastest on computers.... typically.
*
You: :)
*
David W: We have an expedited option for 2 - 3 business day delivery.
*
You: okay great
*
You: #3
*
You: Lets say you do release a new product tomarrow. Could that product be available from a third party... say... Best Buy the day of the release?
*
You: Reason is I want to order directly from Best Buy if I can because of there service plans
*
David W: I'd say no, our released units are available only thru us within the first few days of announcing. As for ordering from Best Buy, they would be offering the AppleCare Protection Plan, which is the same service plans we offer directly from Apple.
*
You: Okay well here is the deal. I'm a Best Buy employee, a Geek Squad agent to be exact. I'm not exactly sure the service plans match, because I was planning on getting the Best Buy Advanced warrenty
*
You: the one that covers damage
*
You: I'm new to the AppleCare, so does AppleCare cover accidental damage?
*
David W: I see, funny enough I actually used to be a Geek Squad agent before working for Apple.
*
You: Oh ya lol
*
You: sweet
*
You: fellow Agent
*
You: lol
*
You: Ya I'm working on my Apple Certification
*
You: lol
*
David W: Back to the coverage, our AppleCare Protection Plan does not offer any coverage for accidental damage, and right as I was leaving was when the Accidental damage for BBY service plans were being made available.
*
You: Ah
*
David W: That I was aware of though, at least from my experience, only the AppleCare Protection Plan could be offered on the Apple computers.
*
You: Ya, they are pretty nice. It covers 1 accidental
*
David W: Yes, a fellow agent. Well Ex - Agent for me. I keep my badge with me still for kicks.
*
You: Say... the LCD screen cracks
*
David W: Gotcha.
*
You: ya see cuz the Best Buy plan would cover that
*
You: So I rather put my money in that if you get my drift
*
You: Okay so let me ask you a personal question if you don't mind. If you were in my shoes, would you go with buying from Best Buy, or Apple?
*
David W: Just another minute...
*
David W: Makes sense to me, though the main point I would state about the AppleCare over the Best Buy one will be your technical support. Now as a Geek Squad Agent, I'm confident your pretty computer savvy, so you can pretty much offer your own technical support. Though what about the problems you cant figure out. I know I run into them myself and with AppleCare, you can call up the people that will know the Mac the best and have your call covered.
*
David W: Ah, a tough question.
*
You: Ya that is true
*
David W: I am really sorry for keeping you waiting, I'll be just another moment.
*
You: no problem
*
You: you fine
*
You: your*
*
David W: If I was in your position I would probably go with the AppleCare over the Best Buy service plan. I've been on both ends of using the AppleCare as well as Best Buy plan, and I've had experience on working with the people that service the units. Just from my knowledge of everything I would choose the AppleCare over the Best Buy service plan.
*
David W: I'm a pretty cautious person, I've had a few notebooks and I've never had a time where I needed some type of accidental damage coverage on my units, so it's something I personally am not too worried about.
*
You: Well see and thats what I have been thinking too
*
You: because I'm a tech
*
You: I'm not gonna have an accidnt
*
You: accident*
*
You: I'm way to careful with my stuff lol
*
David W: I know what you mean!
*
You: okay so this has really helped
*
You: cuz there is no way I can wait any longer to order
*
You: so Best Buy is kinda out of the question now
*
You: So hopefully everything goes to plan and the MacBook Pro is updated tomarrow so I can order and get it before I go
*
You: So... lol... any insider info you want to give to a fellow agent ;)
*
You: lol, im shaking already of withdrawls
*
David W: Sorry, nothing from the inside :)
*
You: It was worth a try ;)
*
You: Okay David. Thanks alot man.
*
David W: No problem!
*
You: It's nice to meet another Agent outside of work. lol
*
David W: It was my pleasure!
*
David W: Have fun at your Precinct.
*
You: Ya I will! Thanks again. Have a nice day.

even if the apple site does come up at eight, it would be down before that. hence my... MY 12 hours is beginning. lol

And either way, its getting to damn close. I'm starting to shake again.

Why is rum always gone. :(

I assume the 17" will be updated just like the 15", but without the LED. Is it possible to swap the normal 17" with a new (original)LED whenever that rolls out?
