USB isn't the fastest thing in the world. Probably fast enough, but I would think Apple would more likely use one of the SATA ports instead. Which brings up SATA flaw discussions, of course.

If it's read-only, so you can only put OSX on it, that would mean effectively wasted space which could be used to put apps on. I don't think that's a very Apple thing to do.

My money is on a simple DVD replacement, where speed isn't an issue. In that scenario, Apple might not care about non-Apple software. They would just want a small cheap, low-performance memory chip.

Personally I am torn on the standard SSD front since I rather like being able to take the standard Macbook Pro and then add an SSD of my choice.
1) avoids the markup on the SSD component
2) ensure the best "bang for your buck" with regards to capacity and performance - if I recall correctly, most SSDs outperform that on the Macbook Air, so it would be a shame to have the OS on an miniature (not 2.5") SSD when I could have a Vertex 2 or even Vertex 3 when they are released.
3) Bragging rights - now everyone will have SSDs and fast boot times - damn it!
All that said, those niggles are more than tolerable if it means no optical drive - what a waste of space - a laptop isn't a DVD player.
Remote mounted disks and external drive are just A-ok in my book (mind you I might be kicking myself when I can't play some games although things seem to be shifting to internet based verification which is a good thing - Steam etc, and yes I am aware of the potential account ban drawbacks - judge, jury; execution, all one's game purchases up in smoke).

Round-up of rumors so far

Here are the rumors we have so far:
  • Small SSD for OS and maybe for swap but probably not for apps
  • No Superdrive
  • Higher resolution displays
  • Larger trackpad
  • Liquidmetal body
  • Optical magnetic power connector
  • Lightpeak connectors

Have I missed anything? Can't wait!

My macbook is almost dead now. Barely working anymore. Lets hope the new ones show up this thursday and have as many new features as it can coz I wont be buying my next one for atleast next 3-4 years

Same here. Except I'm still using a PowerBook G4 7 years on. I wonder if a MBP will last 7 years....

Old macbook

So I want a new macbook pro like everyone else, but my 4 year old Black macbook is in perfectly good condition. I would hate to waste it and buy a new one, when one really isn't needed, but the capabilities of the macbook pro would open a lot of doors. I was going to give it to my girlfriend, but she just bought a toshiba. What do people do with their old macs that really don't have any issues?

you could sell it on ebay ;)

they mummified and sell it for $10000 three decades later , just like lisa

I'm just worried about selling a personal computer. I would rather sell her toshiba, but are they even worth anything on resale? She bought it like 3-4 months ago from best buy for like $600.

Heh? Isn't hers a personal computer? Anyway, you would format either before selling them.

And that wipes everything? Its just that I pay all of my credit cards, have all my receipts, and filed all of my taxes on this computer in the last 4 years. She has had hers for a few months, and just surfs and uses word.

I'm probably the least technologically minded person on here, so do ask someone else too, but I always thought that (re)formatting a computer actually restores it to its factory settings. So everything goes irrevocably. But, as I said, do check.

8-16 gigs will only be big enough for system files not too many apps. A quick look at my apps folder shows that i'm tipping the scale at slightly over 80 gigs :/

EDIT: From AI: Higher end models are said to use SSD exclusively, much like Apple's existing MacBook Air line.

I hope THAT is true. I'm shooting for the 2200 15 inch mbp.

Why stop at 40? Thinking about this logically, Apple has already been manufacturing 64 GB Blade-style SSD's for the Macbook Air. Right? And judging from the $999 cost of the air, these aren't terribly expensive to make :)

I think it would make perfect sense for apple to place the same thing in the MBP, and then give you options for different sized hard drives that could go into the HDD bay (and still offer SSD options for that bay) so you could have a Dual SSD or a high capacity HDD & 64GB SSD - and they may even offer an inbuilt 128 GB SSD 500GB HDD combo for the higher end Pro models (15-17")

I feel that Apple, will come to the table with something new and great. Anyone who complains until then is just being a little sour... The product isn't even out yet. While my speculations are just that, at least I trust apple to do the right thing here...

Dear Thursday,

I know that you like to delay your arrival to annoy the hell out of me, but please HURRY UP.

Segate's Flash/hdd combo

does not segate offer something similar to flash/hdd combo already in one package? I was about to get one of those for my macbook

DON'T DO IT!

Though it seems to be a good idea there have been many reports lately of the drive failing and having major issues for mac users. On the upside Seagate is actively looking for a solution

A larger trackpad? no way. There's plenty of room for my 4 fingers. It's perfect the way it is. In fact, it's already 50% larger than mouse pads on many other laptops. Besides, what gestures would they add anyways? If you ask me, it's gonna get too complicated. Although, I'm on a 13 inch and there's no room left for a larger trackpad unless you shrink the keyboard, the 15 inch and 17 inch could use a larger trackpad, I guess if there's enough room.

But the OS stored on a SSD sounds good, as well as a lighter MacBook. But they better not be too eager to completely take out the optical drive. Not unless they want a huge mob of CD and DVD lovers coming after them.

You hit the nail on the head...If I buy a CD and make 3 copies for my family members (not charging them of course) it's completely legal and ethical.

Actually, it's neither.

First, it's not legal:

Nor is it fair use if you and your family makers are listening to their copies at the same time.

It's also not ethical. You own the copy, not the phonorecord encoded on it. You have no right to copy it except for fair use purposes.

Those were the days:

You've provided an interesting fact about Apple's OS X that not many people know of, but Im almost even more sure that most Apple/Mac lovers dont know that a former FBI consultant who's nondisclosure agreement with the FBI has expired, stated that the FBI planted back doors in OpenBSD which you can read about here and here. Spooky!

The former FBI consultant also "suggests that this knowledge of the FBI's backdoors played a role in DARPA's decision to withdraw millions of dollars of grant funding from OpenBSD in 2003". I would hope that Apple quickly acts in a very proactive and transparent manner, providing a full audit OS X's code.

A code audit was performed, and this was disproven.
