I don't have the time to read 650 or so posts, so forgive me if this has been discussed already. How much and how great of an update do people think this would be if it were to happen soon? My current computer crashed (PC) three days ago and I was planning on buying a new Macbook this weekend, and I would like to have the most up-to-date product. But if this is going to be a somewhat smaller update, then would not mind having them update it the week after I get one.

it is varying..some ppl are saying a minor processor upgrade...while some are optimistic about an upgrade to SR, with LED backlit screen and possibly an alu shell ;)

The thing about 30th Oct is a bit strange.
Apple writes in the back-to-school clauses to give the discount "until 30th Oct (including 30th)". So why isn't it 31th as it is the end of the month?

Neverland, Apple (almost) always releases new products on a Tuesday. (This is common practice among other retailers as well, check the publishing and music industries.)

And why they decided to release the new OS on a Friday, I don't know. If I'm not mistaken, they released the iPhone on a Friday, n'est-ce pas? Maybe they like to release their really big new products on a Friday, to emulate the hype of a movie opening? In any event, all the computer upgrade releases that I can recall arrived on a Tuesday.

Oct 30th is starting to sound good to me. I think mainly because I don't want to wait until Nov 6th lol. Damn it I want my macbook so I can try Back To My Mac with Leopard already. That has me the most excited!

Well, that's my hope, too. :) But my logical side tells me that it won't be until at least November 6. I don't think Apple would want to step so soon on the hype surrounding their new OS. Besides, they're working overtime this week to produce, market and ship the new OS, so they probably need a little breather between new releases.

My really logical side whispers to me that a new MacBook probably won't come out until January. I would expect more rumors to be floating around if it were coming out as soon as November 6. And sales of their existing notebook lineup appear to be still going strong.

Also, everyone seems to think that the MBP won't be updated until January, and I don't think Apple will want to update the MB so far in advance of a MBP update, as that will make it too close spec-wise to its more expensive cousin, thus cannibalizing sales from the higher-profit product.

So, if the rumor mill doesn't significantly ramp up next week, prepare for disappointment. (Then again, I don't always listen to my really logical side. Keep hope alive!)

I'm new to apple products -- will these upgrades make the prices go up as well?:confused:

Current rumor status is that it will be an upgrade to the Santa Rosa chipset which will mean faster FSB and the ability to support 4GB of ram along with a new graphics chip GMA X3100.

From what everyone says this is worth waiting for. I'd be surprised if it comes out later than Nov 6th. If you can wait, wait. If you need a computer immediately... well there's nothing you can do.

In my experience, usually not. Apple usually prices upgraded products the same (or close) to the product they replace. They just stop selling the earlier version. (Though you can often get them at a discount from other resellers.)

No, but don't expect them to come with 4GB of RAM, they will merely support that size. It might come with 2GB standard though:)

As for the X3100, I don't think it's more expensive than the GMA950. God knows why they're still using those (my guess is to justify the price difference with the MBP).

If they only use 2.16 and 2.2 chips it won't cannibalize MBP sales as much.

But here's what you have to look at: XMAS sales. If I don't want to spend $1800 on a MBP, I'm going to look at the MB. But I might also look at a Dell. If the Dell specs are better for the same price, I might not pick up the MB. Looking at Dell's website, the lower end aren't rocking 800Mhz FSB's but they are runnning X3100 gpu's. With a new OS that can run Windows and new faster specs on a MB with a slightly lowered price it would look much more attractive for xmas than it does now. So I'd think that would be their reason for doing that. Plus, it's cheaper for them to run SR in both notebooks especially their book that sells in higher numbers. I dunno, we'll see what they think is best soon I guess, eh?

Agreed.

Tiger was announced on a Tuesday and launched on a Friday
Leopard was announced on a Tuesday and launched on a Friday
The new iMac was announced and released on the same day, Tuesday 7 August
The revised MacBook was announced and released on the same day, Tuedsay 15 May 2007
Apple TV was announced on Tuesday 9 January and shipped on Tuesday 20 March

Thus:
Tuesday = announcement day
Tuesday = hardware day
Friday = software day

I was just thinking that maybe they keep the processor speeds the same just go to SR with new graphics.

Jobs, you better have my new MacBook waiting for me on the 30th or my blood is on your hands!

Dude, don't take it that far. I called the apple store and they said they did not receive any shipments of any new laptops. The worst of it all is that I have to update OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.5 from the install disc. I seriously hope when I go to the APPL store tonight, they will be like PUNK'D and I'll see a beautiful new Macbook on display.

Yeah Jobs, don't make me do it!

Oef, 6 hours to go... I can't wait anymore. I said I would wait with buying at least untill december but I think I'll be buying before that.

A bit of an off-topic question: can you order a macbook now and order applecare (to increase warrenty to 3 years) later? Like in say 2 months or something?

You can buy Applecare anytime in the year following the purchase (while the standard warranty is still in effect). It extends the warranty by two years from date of purchase of the computer though, not when you buy the Applecare, though I think that's obvious. You just go online to register the Applecare with your computer's serial number.

Santa Rosa is a full platform

I was just thinking that maybe they keep the processor speeds the same just go to SR with new graphics.

Santa rosa is a full platform: CPU, motherboard, and wireless. The Santa Rosa motherboard requires a socket P processor, which only come in 2.0. 2.2, 2.4 etc. The older socket M processors are the 2.16 and 2.33 speed. there is no chance at all they would not change to a socket P. now they might keep the lower (aka cheaper) 2.0 and 2.2 ghz speeds to distinguish from the 2.2 and 2.4 on the MBP. this update is also essential to have 4 gb of ram.

Note: there are two 2.0 ghz C2D cpus, the older socket M one with 667 fsb and the newer socket P with 800 fsb.

The actually cpu speed difference is practically irrelavent. the graphics update and max ram are the big improvements.

If you looked about 150 posts ago, I think (i.e. I'm copying others ideas) that the announcement is going to be on Tuesday November 6.

Just put the gun down, it's not worth it. Everything is going to be OK.
RIGHT HE'S NOT LOOKING, SOMEBODY SIT ON HIM!!!

thanks for schooling me on that... I tried doing a quick search but came up empty handed.

And thank you for schooling me with some class and not being a d*ck lol.

lmao :D

It is rumored to be Nov 6th. Oct 30th is still a possibility (Please don't take my false hope from me! I need something to hold onto! I'm about to go to the mac store here and I need something stopping me from doing the stupid thing a buying a MB ahhh!)

I will take over as Multimedia and scream IT'S NOVEMBER 6TH!

Just go to your local Apple Shop and get one of these lovely over-sized and rather plain-looking t-shirts that I'm wearing.

:apple:

Does the current MB have draft n wireless?

According to the fine print on apple's website, the macbooks have draft n.

check out subscript [6] on the complete specs tab on their website.

My Prediction

I predict that no updated macbooks will be released today.

or tomorrow.

or the next day.

the crazy thing is, i don't even have the money to get one if they do come out, but that's irrelevant and won't let it spoil the fun. i know for sure something will be out by mid January when i actually will have money. i can't imagine actually having the money in hand ready to buy when an update is so close.
