OSX has always released on a Friday. Nothing new with 10.5.

Neverland, Apple (almost) always releases new products on a Tuesday. (This is common practice among other retailers as well, check the publishing and music industries.)

And why they decided to release the new OS on a Friday, I don't know. If I'm not mistaken, they released the iPhone on a Friday, n'est-ce pas? Maybe they like to release their really big new products on a Friday, to emulate the hype of a movie opening? In any event, all the computer upgrade releases that I can recall arrived on a Tuesday.

If they only use 2.16 and 2.2 chips it won't cannibalize MBP sales as much.

But here's what you have to look at: XMAS sales. If I don't want to spend $1800 on a MBP, I'm going to look at the MB. But I might also look at a Dell. If the Dell specs are better for the same price, I might not pick up the MB. Looking at Dell's website, the lower end aren't rocking 800Mhz FSB's but they are runnning X3100 gpu's. With a new OS that can run Windows and new faster specs on a MB with a slightly lowered price it would look much more attractive for xmas than it does now. So I'd think that would be their reason for doing that. Plus, it's cheaper for them to run SR in both notebooks especially their book that sells in higher numbers. I dunno, we'll see what they think is best soon I guess, eh?

Take a hint Jobs, 10 days is a lot for me to wait. I might just take a stroll down to dell.

I have just been on the Dell.com website and if you configure a model with the 2.0ghz processor you will get a DVD drive so you have to compare the Dell to the middle range MB as well. The Dell comes out at $1,324 with the Santa Rosa processor and the MB is $1,299. If Apple drop the MB's price Dell will probably lower the XPS M1330 price as well.

I will be buying a new Mac very soon. In fact, I would buy now if it weren't for Leopard coming out soon. I have never owned a Mac but looking at them in the stores and screen captures online, Mac OS 10.4 looks much better to me than Leopard. I am tempted to buy before Leopard comes out just so I can have Tiger.

On the other hand, if it is possible they are going to upgrade the Macbook with the release of Leopard, I am waiting. If they don't upgrade the Macbook, I may just buy the Macbook Pro.

I like the design and size of the Macbook, but I would like the video card in the Macbook Pro. I really don't play games, but you never know what will happen in the future. Mainly I want the Mac for iLife and to get away from Windows.

My thought to a T, with the exception of Tiger. If I am going to jump into Mac, I'll learn the newer OS rather than Tiger. No SR and with a GMA 950, and I'm waiting. BTW my first hands on at the Apple store in Tampa at the International Mall was heaven. All the black shirts made my first time visit a great experience. The sweet Mac book in white, the awesome 24 " i Mac, and oh the i-Pod Touch, my future life in Apple will be so sweet!:D:apple:

What I've read is that mobile Penryns are out in January not later. I believe the 2.8GHz Penryn MacBook Pro will be the hardware centerpiece of the January 15 SteveNote in San Francisco.November 6 you will see just how far off base you are. The back-to-school flush is over. New models featuring 4GB ram recognition and X3100 IG will fill many Christmas stockings this winter.

OK MM my man, I was drooling at the Mac store in the mall at International plaza in Tampa, first hands on with a MB and i Mac 24', but i am smitten with the MB. I'm holding you to your word on 11/6;):apple:

november 6th

Noticed whilst browsing through quidco (a referral site) that they have an offer on at the moment

"Win a new iPod nano. Earn 4% commission on all Apple Store purchases

For your chance to win an 4 GB iPod Nano, simply click through to the Apple Store using the link below before November 5th. "

maybe this is a clue that there's an update on the 6th

who knows

Not sure if anybody has mentioned this, but it looks like Apple is "hiding" the plastic on the Mini on their site. I think this adds a little credibility to the theory that they are trying to do away with plastic in their products.

This is not very significant, but this Forbes review mentions the November rumors:

"Apple watchers expect that updates to Apple's notebook lineup will arrive in early November..."

Well one thing is for certain. This guy was spouting some rubbish!

The November 6th rumors seem to be pretty accurate (Multimedia seemed pretty positive in his predictions).
I can see what you mean about hiding the plastic top of the Mac Mini on the Apple website. It may be a hint to a move towards a full line of Alu products - especially seeing as they are over half way there already (the Mini and MB being the only ones to retain their white plastic facade). Or it may just be that the Mini looks cute when viewed from the side. It's all just guesswork at the moment, but November 6th sounds like a good date for an update.
Bring it on Apple :)

Now the question is... how does Leopard run on the current Macbooks? Is the GMA950 holding it back at all? I need someone with a Macbook to do a little mini-review and sum up the graphical points of Leopard on the Macbook. Graphics is really the major reason everyone is waiting for next gen... at least it is for me.

Macdim, I spent about a quarter of an hour on Leopard on a Blackbook Friday night and it was very fast indeed.
Programs booted up quickly, iTunes was great, spaces moved flawlessly, coverflow was snappy and the stacks sprung right out.
I must say I was very impressed, there definately wasn't anything that stood out as bad to me.
Any updates in the future will only improve this, but the current line seem quite up to it, in my opinion.

I went to the Apple Store yesterday because I was curious about this too, especially after reading some of the fears people had about Leopard running with GMA950 graphics (similar to the fears you hear from Windows users about Vista running on GMA950).

I tried out most of the special effects-related additions; spaces, expose with multiple spaces and windows open, time machine, stacks, QuickLook, etc.

As near as I can tell, it seemed to handle things quite well. I was thinking it might choke on things like movies playing in coverflow and quicklook, or shifting rapidly from file to file in coverflow and quicklook, etc. but it seemed pretty smooth to me. Even while having these things open and running, multiple apps, etc. Spaces' animation was pretty smooth.

One thing I noticed was that the MacBook had 3GB of RAM (as did the iMacs and MBP's at the Apple Store).

That's really great, thanks! It is really good to hear that the mediocre chip in the Macbooks doesn't have too much trouble handling the new graphics load. This also means that the next chip (3100) should be fine for quite a while.

Also, thanks Zadillo.

Erase and Install. Limit and choose your Dashboard widgets carefully and do the 2D dock defaults setting and it will run smooth. At first I did and Archive & Install and left all my old widgets and had the 3D dock and there was stuttering and choppyness.

Will you be waiting for the fabled November 6th updates?

Multimedia would sure be telling you to do so ;)

As far as i know, apple usually announce new/updated products at special events which are announced 1/2 weeks before the actual event happens (for the press to make time to turn up, (even more) free rumour publicity etc). So if there IS something happening on Nov 6th....wouldnt we need to expect to hear something pretty soon?

Depends, it'll be low key if it's just going to be a processor upgrade or a big special event for completely new MacBook.
Also depends if it's going to be announced and shipped on the same day, or announced Nov 6 for "mid November" shipping.

So in short, haven't got a *!@% clue!
Glad I cleared that up!
