Okay...
We could see an announcement on September 30 and shipping in early October.
This doesn't mean we won't see a design change this year.
Sounds like the best option would be to freeze yourself and have friends thaw you out when the update comes.

Im gathering they dont discount them to sell them off. They would rather scrap them, so we buy the new ones, right?

Yea the black macbooks are nice, some people have wishful thinking that the new aluminum macbooks (if they end up being aluminum at all, but most likely will) will be painted either white or black to distinguish them from the MBP
Also supposedly the existing macbooks get marked as refurbished and discounted, so you may be able to still find them there after the new style comes out. Apple isnt going to just scrap ones that are already made, they are going to still want to make a profit on them
They likely go back to Apple's main distribution centers to be sold as clearance items on the online store.

like many of you i've been waiting for the new macbooks for ages, at uni and would love a laptop. is anyone paying attention to the fact that the back to school promotion finishes on september 15th, a monday. possible that new macbooks could be released the next day....a tuesday. the last two macbook updates happened on a tuesday and apple did say recently that they had several products they were excited about that were coming out in the coming months...and a range going through a transition. i doubt they were talking about the ipods, because they change all the time

the least they could have done is announce when they would be releasing them even if it wasn't today. Even if it wasn't a redesign but a performance bump I would have been happy.
i still don't get why apple has to be so secretive about things. If the only way you do business is through hype and skepticism I personally think thats a sign of weakness in the company. Most companies announce new products a good amount ahead of time...

Yeah but if they're launching new notebooks sept/oct, especially when they have a new design or significant better hardware, wouldn't they wanna throw an event for it? And two events shortly after eachother.. I don't know about that.. Not Apple style...
But I still hope they wil launch soon, I don't need a new design, but some upgrades would be nice.. at least a 8800GT card! But I don't know how long I can wait, my University started already two weeks ago and I still need a laptop!!

Last year, Apple had an event in August and another one in September. And as the original MacBook shows, an event isn't needed for a redesigned product.
The new laptops will be released 15 days after everyone decides that they're not going to wait anymore and purchase one. That way when the new laptops come out, everyone will buy it too, thus making Apple more money.
All I know is I've been waiting a long time to buy my first MBP...actually my first mac period.
I'm starting to get frustrated and before long I will be buying a new laptop as I can't/won't want to wait anymore. If this happens, it will most likely not be an Apple.

when i say macs, i think my friend means Macbooks and macbook pros. im not sure about the desktop computers, she only talked about notebooks.

i dont have an exact date. she said that new macbooks and macbooks pros are coming out at the end of september. i dont know if this means when they are shipping, or being announced, or what. i just know thats what she said.
An 8800 ? You can't be serious.
You want to pay a premium for a 2 year old video card that melts glaciers ? Ack !You know what ? I don't want style. I don't give a biscuit about an event. Just update the bloody computers apple. Send out a press release and just do it.

A bit of both... I've been putting off a work project that I need to start. I've also gone months without a laptop and would like to have a new one.
The one that's out there is not worth the $3000 for what you get.
This is absolutely ridiculous already. I'm done drinking the Apple Kool-Aid--I've been waiting for months for new MBP's and MBA's. Lenovo and Dell have all released their new laptops, Apple's current lineup is underpowered esp for the price. I'm willing to spend top dollar on a laptop, but not on something that's this old.

? We've got the pretty nanos and the thin touches but what about the mainstay computers? We don't just want the fun stuff (great though it is, don't get me wrong) but we do need to work too. Come on , you can do it! Soon please!

Yeah I kinda thought it was too good to be true for the release on the 9th, since its an iPod + iTunes event. Hopefully they will be updated later this month or early October though.
