I don't think they really need an event for new case designs, they could just have a guided tour, big online exposé on the site etc. Everyone and their dog is waiting for the new MBPs, with Montevina long out it's not like Apple needs to draw any more attention to the fact that anyone interested in buying a pro laptop is waiting for Apple to show their hand.

Yes, in hindsight I think you're right. I think we're far more likely to see a quiet update (be it transitional or minor updates) in the next few weeks rather than an event.

I don't know, I'm just not "seeing" an event solely for the Macbook/Macbook Pro. Also, I think it'll just be the MBP updated with the MB following a while after, furthering the idea of no event for just one line up change. Like you said, the people who want a Macbook Pro know what to be expecting, and an event is really superfluous. The MBP is already an established product. It doesn't need to keep re-marketing itself like the iPod does. There isn't really a competitor in terms of "mobile creative power horses". Yes there are other very good laptops out there, but I wouldn't consider buying a single one of them for my needs (Graphic Design).

not only are the the macbooks far more overdue for an update than the macbook pros are...but the macbooks are also black / white plastic which really doesnt fit in with the rest of apples products. there have been talks of making the macbooks aluminum for forever and a day, if there is going to be a transition i believe this is the most significant one (with a slight spec bump of course)

The only problem I would have with that is that updating the MB prior to the MBP would leave the MBP potentially "under powered" in terms of spec. I doubt they would have their lower end notebook so close spec wise to their higher end notebook.

Besides the aesthetic value of the Macbook in terms of not fitting in with the overall aesthetic of the line up isn't strictly true. The iPhone's are now all black/all white Plastic with a "glossy" feel/look. If anything newcomers to Apple using the iPhone are exactly who the Macbooks are aimed for! Every day users! I don't believe it's in as much of a need of upgrading as the MBP.

Im still thinking/hoping that it'll be both that are updated, or just MBP for the meanwhile.

Yeah, there is no way they will update the MacBook with new tech first. Either they update both at the same time, or the MBP first with the MB following later.

In any case, the MB should be updated to aluminium case, to get rid of that terrible case cracking that's been existing since it first launched in 2006.

If they don't need an event for a completely revamped MacBook Pro w/ case design etc....then why the heck do they need an event for new colours & elongating the iPod Nano?

...and pressure the media to attend because they don't want to miss "something big."

longer

new colours

less Classic

newer iTunes

big deal

A brand new professional notebook after all this wait would be a WAY bigger deal than longer rainbow Nanos.

I beg to differ. The MBP *hardly* has the market share that the iPod does.
Are you telling me they need MORE market share of iPods? Their product has been BRANDED like Kleenex, Band-Aid, Vaseline, Lazy-Boy, Post-it Notes, Jell-o, Walkman or Sharpie just to name a few. People often just mean MP3 player and they say iPod. Its over, they've won...what more do they need? Now maybe if Apple owned MORE of the notebook market they'd have done an event & updated their out-of-date notebook lineup. You think Apple's content w/ their growth & market share of the overall notebook market? I highly doubt it. They may have the creative market cornered sure but overall there's alot of room for improvements.

If there is a product they DON'T need all the hoopla for its the iPod, not that this event delivered what was promised or anything.

You're absolutely right in terms of power & specs....however I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple revise the MB first....since it will be so close to the Pro it will look like a huge deal and sell bundles. Then they go & upgrade the Pro about a month later & sell those like hotcakes. Who knows, it could go either way and has in the past.

Macbooks already have the new style keyboard, accessible hard drive, new latch. And they are not going to put Montevina in a MB before a MBP (assuming they go that route).

MBPs need to be updated next, Macbooks will just have to get in line.

iPods out of the way... Ready for the new MBP.

Ok, now that we've taken care of all the iPods, I'm ready for the updated MacBook Pro.

Whatever happened to that rumored case design where I wouldn't have to take out 27 tiny screws every time I upgrade the HD? (which I seem to do every time a more capacious one show up on the market) My only other wish for the updated MBP is that it somehow be made to run cool enough so it's no longer the dominant cause of global warming.

Bring it on! :)

Oh no I understand the market share is minimal in comparison to the iPod, the problem being that Apple releasing a new notebook is not going to jump their market share up 40% or whatever.

The lower value items do need to be re-marketed constantly. Yes the brand is established, and a good brand it is. But there's only so much a brand can do. They need to keep the market penetration high. The problem with the iPod is it's success is due to it being innovative and first on the market. And the bee sting with that is that it must constantly be evolving, changing it up, new features, hence the iPhone, the shuffle, the nano. With the iPod because the market is so saturated with mp3 players, be it existing iPod users or other mp3 players the items do need to be constantly "resold", people can afford to impulse buy these items, they are relatively low value.

How much can they change with the notebooks to make people want not need to buy one every 18months? It's simply following the intel road plan at the moment. And case designs mean very little to the majority of industry professionals. Every now and again they will have an event, but it'll usually be combined with other announcements to say "oh hey our notebook can do THIS" but besides that they don't seem to get much fanfare. Seems to be a history of quiet updates, with the occasional announcement.

I know I'll be proven wrong just to make me eat my words but I don't think they need an event to be honest. The core users know hardware evolves in notebooks, and most will have a vague idea of what will be to come.

In Q1 2009, Intel plans to release a Q9000 2.0 GHz quad-core for $348. Like always, no word on TDP yet. :rolleyes:

Between it and the $851 2.27 GHz quad-core, that's a way to have a Q1 2009 "speed bump" with all quad-cores in base models.

QX9300 - 2.53 GHz - $1038 - 45 W
Q9100 - 2.27 GHz - $851 - 35 W
Q9000 - 2.00 GHz - $348 - ? W

Price and GHz differences seem to be out of place. Intriguing.

According to Intel's Data Sheet, the Q9100 also has a 45W TDP.

So not sure it's going to be an option for the MacBook Pro...

Same reason they had an event for the hifi: they're a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Im not expert and I dont have any insider information, but I believe the new macbooks are going to come out sooner rather than later, it may not mean much, but I was looking on Apple's website and found something interesting:

http://www.apple.com/environment/

Here is the only important part:

"Responsible Manufacturing

Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in its products, and arsenic in the glass of flat-panel displays by the end of 2008. Apple helps to safeguard the environment — as well as consumers’ safety — by restricting the use of environmentally harmful compounds in our materials and manufacturing processes. For example, our restricted substances program limits the use of heavy metals and ozone depleting substances in our products and manufacturing processes."

So to me that means they are putting out a redesigned MB sometime soon :D

I really hope you're right!

I really hope you're right!

Haha me too, I have been waiting a bit for these new laptops to come out, its getting harder and harder to wait

By the end of 2008 would mean that in 2009, all those enviro changes will take place...

Hmm I understand that, but then why wouldn't they just say that all these hazardous materials will be out of the products by 2009?

Believe me I know this statement from the environmental page is a bit of a reach, but I can hope and wish that it means the new MB are coming soon

apparently you are not familiar with the English language (apparently Steve Jobs isn't either, "funnest iPod"...c'mon "funnest" isn't a real word.) When someone says it will be by the end of 2008 they mean prior to the end of 2008. As in if someone says they will have something done by the end of the day, they don't mean they will do it tomorrow (unless you're a chronic procrastinator like me)

Hopefully this still holds true

sorry for being an ass, i just want a new mbp now

MBP updates

01/06 - MBP intro. - 90 days later -->
04/06 - 17" intro. - 180 days later -->
10/06 - Core 2 duo - 240 days later -->
06/07 - speedbump - 240 days later -->
02/08 - speedbump - ...?

cycles between updates seem to get longer or at least stay the same...

240 days from 2/08 would be approx. 10/08....

360 days from 2/08 would be 2/09 which would come close to macworld '09.

To me i guess updates to the pro will be in October. Reason being, a product at a time. September is iPods and after the craze has sinked. It will be October and its time for the mbp update launch ! Damn Apple launch a product at a time when the other product is more due for an update...

I agree - it will also give a nice pop to the beginning of Q4 sales.

A little glimmer of hope for you all......

As I, like many of you, have got fed up waiting, I have been scouring the interwebs today trying to find the best deal for a Macbook Pro. I had an online chat with a large reseller in the UK and they advised me that all the signs, according to them, point to a new MB Pro this month and that I had better wait.

To be honest this pisses me off a little as I was ready to pull the trigger on a shiny new MB Pro 17". But now I guess I had better wait a little while more. Apple ain't getting £2k of my hard earned just yet :)
