What would you need 8gb of RAM for? I'm not being mean, I really want to know because I am planning on getting 4gb for mine for AE, FCP, and the other programs in Pro Studio 2. Would 8gb show a much bigger improvement over 4?

For those of us that use progressive download (stored in RAM) for streaming lectures and load about 5 at a time it lets you actually do other things on the computer when you have them loaded. Fortunately though, I've been a good boy and kept up with them this year instead of having so many at a time. It was definitely a problem with 2 GB, but 4 GB on my iMac has improved things immensely.

So the Macbooks would have a better CPU+other stuff than the MBP? I don't really see that happening...

Well then by your logic the MBP would be released first right? In the past the MacBook has been released a month BEFORE the MBP in some instances. Perhaps this just shows that the Pro has fallen behind a little bit and the MacBook is actually a pretty damn skookum unit. Check the link yourself if you don't believe me.

I never said the MB would be released first this time though did I?

Very funny, I'll come to you for advice on this week's lotto numbers... How to get from "a few days" to the "9th" is a mystery to me, but then again, the name of the site is ...rumors... so anything goes.

Well what does "a few days" mean in NZ or to you then Jens?
To me there is a big difference linguistically in a few days, a few months or a few months. A few days usually implies 3 or so...much like a couple=2. Since the Mac event is less than a week away I hope that clears up the mystery. For you to blow off this thread because its a "rumors" site would be unfair. Possibly its your poor choice of words that has resulted in this particular rumors thread. C'mon just admit it Jens. :p

I strongly believe a new macbook and macbook pro is on the way. I live in Portugal and a major retailer of Apple hardware (Fnac) is running out of Macbook Pro stock and the prices I've dropped on some models more than 500€. Now, why would that happen? Only if a new product was about to arrive.

I think Eclipse alone would use all 8 gigs :D

Don't know much about linguistics; I don't like pasta. Just a simple peon here...

Rumors: I read in a post above "Are you having a laugh ? , this is MacRumors , we are allowed to go completely bananas regarding updates , plus it's also a good bit of fun too" and that seems to be quite a healthy attitude, to which I can easily subscribe. Anyone who takes anything here too seriously needs help.

"A few days": No, it does not mean a few months... I feel like Gandhi trying to pour oil on the waves of mass hysteria. A normal month for us is several hundred thousand of dollars worth of Mac sales, and you can rest assured I wouldn't just kill income on the grounds of pure speculation. But then again, I have only sold Macs since 1983, so there is probably a lot more to learn, and once this drama has been resolved courtesy of Apple's formal announcement I am happy to accept bottles of bubbly as a token gesture of your immense appreciation - or to eat my hat...

Will more RAM be helpful?

I have long marveled at the retired school teacher who gets a 4Gb RAM extension for the 2.0Ghz Macbook, just to make sure he can hear all of his music loud enough...

I think most users over-spec a unit, for ego, lack of knowledge and insecurity reasons. BUT, for the pro users (large Photoshop files with multiple layers, operating Windows in parallel, streaming video work, online gaming designs, TV and radio production, etc.) every bit of RAM usually helps to avoid involving the hard drive - and that speeds things up, reduces drive wear and extends battery life. Is it worth it? Probably not for some, certainly not at the official retail prices for RAM, but with some clever purchasing and some patience, a few hundred dollars of RAM upgrade might create a seriously powerful unit.

Based on what I know from friends and what applications people on here have stated they use their laptop for I agree completely. In fact, most people would be best served w/ a MB and not a Pro model (for word processing, iTunes & surfing etc).

Glad to know I have a healthy attitude ( to some things at least ) .

Couldnt agree with you more. I see people with Pro's that just dont need 'em. I think I might get more than 4gb of RAM, thanks to what you said. After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and Pro Studio 2 are all pretty intensive programs and I think the extra RAM will help me out.

We can only hope. :p

I HOPE SO TOO! I am in high school and reaaaaaaaaaally want the MacBook Pro. Well, I want the top of the line MacBook. So, I would be upset if I get it now (after update) and they come out with a new notebook next year, when I could have waited...

Serious Photoshop work comes to mind. The less you need to page to the HDD the better the performance and battery life.

Ok. I know photo shop is a picture editor, but like WHY would you use it? I mean, the average computer user doesn't need to use it, we can use ms paint. Like who specifically needs to use photoshop (Like, a photographer or something?)? This is a serious quesion.

That's true, but a percentage of these people can't bring themselves to use a 13" screen, also the backlighted keyboard is so useful but the MB doesn't have that feature yet.

I disagree there. The backlight keyboard in my honest opinion is simply a distraction and most people that learn how to type can type without looking don't need it.

^I just said it's useful, not essential.
I never had a laptop with a backlighted keyboard, but I found myself in situation in which I would have benefitted from that. Of course that if you don't have it, you're forced to learn to do without, but why not having it if it can be of any help?

Yes a photographer and any serious designer. It's pretty much the standard raster (pixel based) editor in anything that involves graphics (film, TV, print, photo, animation, 3D fx, compositing, etc.)

You can draw in MS Paint, but with photoshop you not only have way better and accurate drawing tools, but it also has very good photo editing and manipulation tools that MS Paint doesn't even offer.

I doubt any average computer user would need photoshop. Maybe photoshop elements would be better for them.

Photographers, yes, and lots of jobs associated with graphic design like those in advertising, public relations, publishing, media, designers of all kinds, people involved in technologies etc. You've also got people who are students of Fine Art, Graphics, Computer Science etc. And webdesigners, whether sites are personal or professional. I'm sure a lot of scientists get use out of PS.

Then you've got casual users who just enjoy playing with high-resolution images and spend their nights pasting themselves into photos with Christian Bale

Who is the user "toshcomputers"?

I don't think that this has been asked yet... but everyone is assuming that the poster toshcomputers is actually associated with ToshComputers.com. Remember people, we're on the interwebs, where nothing is as it seems.

Do legitimate businesses typically post on rumor pages?

No offense to the user toshcomputers if he/she is real, but someone has to play skeptic.

Count me into that percentage. I'm a prospective MBP-owner, have thought a lot about the differences and the MBP will always win out for my purposes.

I've used friends' Macbooks and the screen is just too small for me. Plus glossy. I watch a fair bit of TV on my laptop and generally for that the bigger the screen the better. I often need to word process with two or three windows open at the same time across one screen. (Obviously then the 17" would be even better but I prefer to pay less and get slightly more portability than going full-on desktop replacement.)

I've never used a backlit keyboard before but speaking as someone who needs to look pretty regularly at the keys in order to type - thanks to having to switch between different keyboards for work etc. - I can imagine that'd be pretty awesome.

Very True.

Especially Astrologers, even when they have GIMP on Linux lol.

But many people ...ahem..."purchase" when Photoshop when they really have no need for some of the more advanced features and, often times, they wont be able to use them in tandem with some of the other features to make a specific effect or whatever.

Many users (generally unlegitimate) will toy around in Photoshop when Express or Elements will suite them well.

If nothing else, the PS guys down in San Jose actually code alot of Photoshop on Macbook Pros , so we could use 8 Gb of ram :)
