You should get a second click, nothing at all like 3D Touch. That is not how force touch on the trackpad works. It is just a second deeper feeling click....not the vibration of 3D Touch. The MacBook works the same way. Just a deeper click
Or the Magic Mouse 3 with force/3D touch.I'm definitely in the same boat. It feels like we're moving toward a trackpad being almost mandatory for OS X with the gesture and pressure-based features getting more numerous all the time.
That said, I've never gotten used to a trackpad as my primary input device. It just never seems as precise or as fast to navigate with as a mouse, especially on a big screen (I use a Logitech Performance Mouse MX, currently, although I'm also a big fan of the M570 trackball)
Indeed. Unfortunately, one thing that has remained remarkably consistent in the 25 years I've been using Apple computers, is that Apple has never made a mouse that I liked using.Or the Magic Mouse 3 with force/3D touch.
Rant: What the heck is Apple's problem with not providing backlit keyboards? I am not kidding, this is an indication that an entire TEAM is asleep at the wheel. PATHETIC.

Why must it always be like this? Apple doesn't implement someone's pet feature and it's the END OF THE WORLD. Apple is incompetent, Apple is doomed, this never would have happened when Steve was around, etc. it's all a bit melodramatic.
My only thought is it would kill the battery life.
I think Apple doesn't expect that desktop keyboards are used in the dark as much as laptops might be.
Wrong. My rant is not like the others. I am right.
Man, I bet you're a LOT of fun in arguments.
It's not even about whether it's a good idea or not – it's the attitude. For instance, I can only type comfortably on a split keyboard, and I would love it if Apple would make one, but I don't go around insisting that Apple is "asleep at the wheel" or "pathetic" just because they don't cater to my every whim. It's weird and unnecessary and lowers the civility of discourse.
Admittedly, I am a little bored on a Saturday night. But my point is still valid. I also would like a split keyboard. In my mind pretty much all keyboards are archaic design. (I think Lenovo does it best with at least some of their keyboards.) But I really do think that asking for and getting a backlit keyboard in 2015 is really not a lot to ask by any standards. I mean, we are the customers and speaking up and out is what we do on this forum.
I will need to look at any third party backlit keyboard. And one thing for sure, Apple cannot be happy about that. They want all the sales from me they can possibly get.
Also, if you look at my history on this Forum, you will see that I am like in the bottom .001% of fanatics. Yes, I may have a strong opinion here and there, but no multi page rants/trolls/etc.
That said, do not even get me started on all the "should I get an SSD or a spinner" questions on this forum. They really should no longer be allowed. SSD all the way baby! Apple could do a lot more for us and to "move the ball downfield" by making a 256 SSD standard.
Apple presents themselves as a premium brand. I expect to get something more than just a name for my money. In this instance, a backlit keyboard is really not too much to ask and hope for. What, maybe $5 worth of LED's? Probably more like $3.
I mean really, a redesign and lightening connector really does not give any more value than was already there. Backlit would be something new.
I'm actually curious what the main use case for these is. I never look at my keyboard. My MacBook Pro has a backlit keyboard, but I never turn on the backlight since it doesn't always turn off automatically, regardless of the settings (for instance, with Netflix or Amazon Prime video it seems to stay on forever)
I'm assuming most people here are home row touch typists - you have the orienting nubs on the F and the J like every other keyboard so you shouldn't need the backlight to get in the right position. Even if you never learned "proper" typing, I'm assuming anyone who spends a lot of time on a computer will at least have developed muscle memory for where all the keys are.
Yes, I mean the new retina Macbook 12" keyboard. I did try it out several times, but didn't like it at all. While the new Magic Keyboard seems to have similar butterfly key mechanics, the it has more key travel than retina MacBook's and overall feels much better (to me).
Anyone know if the new Magic Keyboard will work with a PC w/BT 4.0? My current Apple Wired Keyboard works fine with my PC.
The keyboard by far. Best keyboard I've ever used, my WPM even went up by 10. The shallower keys and spacing (which does take getting used to) makes typing a lot nicer, and the keys even feel a bit better when playing video games and stuff.
I'm using it on Windows 10, made the switch from the same Apple Wired Keyboard and it works fine with my BT dongle. The program for reprograming keys made for the previous gen wireless keyboard also still works, aside from the function and eject key. I changed F12 to delete so that ctrl + alt + del works.
Yes, magic keyboard is a blast. After couple of days using it, I totally agree - best keyboard I've owned so far, in terms of typing speed and feel.
It is difficult to desribe, but personally I highly recommend it to anyone, especially to the users of previous gen. Apple wireless keyboard.
Yeah, I was and am definitely going to try that at the store. I had a feeling that it might be clearly better. Still, nowhere near as good as the MacBook I am guessing![]()
chabig, it has never been only a desktop keyboard. Many used/use theI think Apple doesn't expect that desktop keyboards are used in the dark as much as laptops might be.

It's better than the MacBook.
Wrong. My rant is not like the others. I am right. Ask anyone. Many people use the computer in a darkened room, a backlit keyboard is a much better typing experience. Or, for those who disagree, they can turn off the light. You really need to objectively admit that for the price, the keyboards should be backlit.
I was not in the Mac world when Steve was around so I would not know about that.
But my point is still valid.
