They'd better come up with something like this.

Mouse is way overdue an update. Very old fashioned. I would assume it’s not selling very well.

It should've been a given in 2011. All I can assume is that the backlight drains the battery to an extent that they consider unacceptable. So then--increase the thickness of the keyboard and give us a bigger battery? That seems to work for the iPhone.
Meh, not really needed if you are actually working and not making a TikTok "clean desktop setups" videos. Battery life is more important. Desk lamp (and overall working in proper lighting conditions) is healthier for the eyes.

Perhaps. But easy enough to add controls allowing you to toggle the brightness from 0-3 like many other keyboards.

Love how everyone is focused on the minor port issue despite the real issue is it's just an awful mouse.
All Apple mouses have been HOT GARBAGE.

Me personally, I use a Logitech G604. Reasons:
  • Has both Bluetooth and dedicated dongle (high polling), easy switching between two devices IF NEEDED.
  • Lots of well placed buttons without feeling or looking like a ridiculous MMO gaming mouse.
  • Onboard memory with 3 profiles; can setup keyboard shortcuts for all the buttons and instantly switch between all, no need for additional software to handle mouse shortcuts (MX Master 3 has none, so this is an instant deal breaker). I have one profile for Mac OS with shortcuts for Adobe Creative Suite, one for Windows and Gaming, and one default.
  • AA battery that lasts MONTHS even using the dongle for high polling
  • GREAT ergonomics.

MX Master 3(S) also has a 125Hz polling rate, which is a no-go after you've tried at least a 500Hz mouse, even for productivity.

Agreed, G604 and Razer Pro Click are my favorites for Mac productivity. But Razer does sooo fit magic keyboard design.

My problem with the charging is that:
1) I forget to turn it off
2) I might not use the iMac (and mouse) for weeks sometimes
3) when I then have to start the iMac just to quickly check something and it’s totally dead it’s really a PITA

But I know that that’s just me holding it wrong
1. It powers down automatically
2. If this is such a concern just plug the thing in when you’re done using it.

Do you guys complain online about your car manufacturers that when you ignore the low fuel light for weeks at a time your car stops moving?

There are plenty of photos from Tim Cook's office showing an iMac on his desk. Like most of the desktops at Apple's offices it has a Magic Trackpad instead of a mouse. Those photos are fairly old (it's an Intel iMac) so I'm sure it's been supplanted by a Mac Mini or Mac Studio with a Studio or ProDisplay.

I use a trackpad on my desktop Mac too. Tried using the same mouse I was using with Windows for a while. Never felt right. macOS is made for trackpad gestures. Most everyone that does use a mouse with their Mac uses it alongside a trackpad for specific purposes.

So, if I'm in the middle of a project and my mouse dies, I have bad time management because I didn't extrapolate out how long my mouse would last? lol
Yes, the fact you ignored a week’s worth of low battery warnings is entirely on you.

Unless they put the charging port somewhere that makes the mouse USABLE while you are charging it, forget it! I'll stick with my Logitech MX Master!

Poor comparison. It’s more like the car leaking fuel while in the garage. And read my post. It actually does use battery while not in use. Not a lot, but it does. This happened to me more than 3 times. But granted - my way of using it is out of the ordinary.

This new mouse talk reminds me of the very first Macintosh. I drove to an event in Chicago where the new Mac was being demoed. There was a third party accessory that you wore a band on your forehead, and moved your head left, right, up and down to make mouse pointer move on the Mac's screen! 😂 Oh the early Mac days I can never forget!

I rarely have to charge my pro mouse. I just plug it in at the end of the day after a few weeks of use.

I'm one of the people who like it. It's low profile, smooth, and doesn't cause hand cramps for me after long use. I manipulate it with just my fingertips.

I know it's a meme at this point, but I enjoy this thing.
You are not alone. I’ve been using these mice for over 10 years, including 39 hours a week for the last six years in my current job (27” and 23.5” iMacs — refuse to call it 24”!). I’ve never found it awkward, uncomfortable or anything but buttery smooth! As I’ve posted here before, the underside charging prevents us using it while wired and risk damaging the charging port/cable, as happens so often when people uses their phones while connected to wires. Mileage clearly varies for many commenters here but my experience has been stellar. I appreciate the deliberate choice of the charging port forcing location.

Yup, this is the one I use too and I now use an MX Keyboard. I can easily switch both the keyboard and the mouse between my Mac and my Windows machine. Plus, I wouldn’t ever want to use a mouse that doesn’t have Infinite Scroll.

Can’t believe several posts in here actually defending the design lol.
Imagine, just for a moment, that there are many of us out there who feel and think differently about the things we use. It’s that simple. Horses for courses! I love using the Magic Mouse and have absolutely no issues with it. Obviously many others commenting here find it less than pleasant. We’re all wired differently, right?

I can unequivocally state that MagicMouse is the most unergonomic, uncomfortable, useless piece of consumer junk ever created in the history of the universe. I am poorer for having purchased it, injured for having used it, my immortal soul now lost to the Devil Himself for having charged it.
I hope you’ve found a suitable alternative that works for your needs. Thankfully, my experience is that it’s ergonomic, comfortable, very useful and useable, and is far from deserving to be added to any list of ‘consumer junk’. Finally, I’m particularly delighted to state — unequivocally— that my eternal soul has been totally (and everlastingly) unaffected by charging the Magic Mouse.

Imagine if they updated this to not have a 14 year old crummy sensor, maybe redesigned it for human hands while they were at it. If you think I'm talking nonsense, check the Rtings review of the sensor, it's way behind even modern cheapies.

I always thought the charging port was put below so you couldn't use it as a corded mouse - Apple wanted to put the "wireless" mouse - but they put the charging port in a usable place on the keyboard and trackpads?!

What gives?
I have zero idea what actual decisions went into the design choices for these three iMac peripherals. But, let me speculate. The keyboard and trackpad do not move while in use. The Mouse moves. So, not having it connected to its charging cable while in uses prevents the (very common) port and cable damage that affects other devices which are used while connected to power, mainly phones. At least, that show I see it.

I doubt there was a thought to trying to prevent people from wearing out cables. It's more likely that the port on the bottom (where the old battery latch was occupying space) allowed them to save money by re-using many of the existing internal components without needing a full redesign when moving from replaceable to rechargeable batteries.

I’ve heard this suggested before but I remain unconvinced. Part of the design process (at Apple and elsewhere) is iterative building and testing. I imagine some serious thought went into where to put the charging port. I really hope Sir John gives us the full story some day. I think more than a few of us would love to know.
