"The most likely reason for the delay is exactly what Apple have said, they have trouble wrapping them.

When you design a new product, the most overlooked thing is the packaging, and the 15" Unibody's got new, much smaller boxes than the old 15" MBP's, so it stands to say the 17" ones will have as well. "

Could it be the delay is due to the number of glossy and matte displays ordered? I ordered a matte display. It seems the longest shipping delays are for the glossy.

I have a new ship date of Feb 27 (old date was Feb 20). I ordered Jan 7.

Pure spectulation on my part!

I am hoping the delay has to do with the 256GB SSD drives. Samsung was supposed to deliver these in January, but they are still not available.

BTW, I called Apple and they gave me a small refund comparable to that received by others in the forum for the hassle. I needed this machine to work while on vacation next week--I won't be able to work now, but perhaps that is a good thing.

If it was a certain screen type, SSD or hard drives they wouldn't delay all of them so it must be something that effects all of them.

Hi

I ordered my 17" MBP on the 5th Feb, I gave up waiting for them to come in store so I decided to buy online.

It has the 2.93ghz processor and the 320gb 7200rpm drive. Those are the only upgrades I made to it, no preinstalled extras. NADA.

My estimated shipping date was the 5th March and delivery date was the 16th March.

On the 6th of FEB the full amount for the laptop was taken out of my account.

From reading what you guys have been saying is that my 17" is ready to ship?
BUT
Considering I just ordered it, this seems unfair as other people have ordered theirs earlier yet have not been charged yet....
I'm thinking the idea of being charged relating to shipment might be a bit off or I am very very very lucky.

I don't think it's ready to ship, that's the initial authorization they do on your card to make sure you got the money! They will refund it back to your card soon then charge you again when it's being shipped.

cmon apple, take my money already!

Hitting the sack, I'll be back in the AM to let y'all know if I have another dream that involves ship dates.

You can all help out at home with this delay, you know - think POSITIVE. POSITIVE THOUGHTS.

Exactly, its nothing to do with SSD drives, matte or glossy screens or they would have shipped some already.

I'd suggest that because they had virtually zero interesting products to announce at MacWorld, they felt the need to announce the 17" earlier than they would have liked. They then hoped the factory might pull out the stops and get a few over here by late January, but it wasn't to be.

I'm not sure if we will ever know what really happened but the two I like so far are.

1. Chinese new year.

2. Waiting for ilife

That being said, I with they would hurry the F#$%^ up! circumstances being what they are I don't have a computer (just my wife's) and I have already been waiting for the 17" for months!!!

The only concern I have with those two possibilities, is surely a company like Apple, who have been shipping products to me from China for years.. would foresee the New Year in their planning. As well, the ILife theory I'm not sure flies as I received my copy of ILife a week ago today for the home system.. so it's been ready for shipping for a time now.. so plenty of time to meet ship dates of this week.. no telling what the delay was really.. but agree it has to be something logistic.. shortages would mean some ship, others would delay..

So I think it's either a logistic or packaging problem.. something unforeseen or a byproduct of the Chinese New Year they didn't figure in.. either way.. we will never really know and can simply hope the ship date remains firm next week.

I agree with what others said, that I think Apple may indeed ship earlier.. that after so many delays I highly doubt they would forecast a date without building in a little buffer time for safety this time..

Chinese New Year shuts everything down for at least 7 days if I remember correctly. That would inturn add into a week of delays (at least) for both packaging/shipping and even part suppliers.

Now thats not including some of the other holidays, such as one for Today.

It certainly does make sense that the week long celebration would delay everything involved.. just seems like Apple would have accounted for that in their planning.. but you never know.. maybe in the rush to get out to the market that was a ball that was dropped.. and came as a surprise.

If the Feb 19 date is delayed again, I guess that will tell us there is a real issue.. otherwise.. we'll all begin receiving shipments. Either way.. not really gonna worry too much about it. I'm just happy if it is an issue with the unit itself they are addressing it before shipping which is how it should be.

It isn't Feb 11 yet, so they haven't missed your ship date yet. It all depends on your location and about 1000 other things.

Oh, BTW, if you think that Apple ignorantly missed Chinese New Year, think again. This occurs every year and you cannot tell me that Apple has never released anything around this time of year before and if they have parts being manufactured/shipped from China you have to accomodate for this.

If they ignorantly missed it, perhaps they do need new management.

Agreed.

Chinese New Year isn't something that just came out of the sky this year. If your unable to set launch dates without looking at your calender, and more importantly your suppliers calender, management does need a shake-up.

I never received an email changing my delivery date....still reads "Ships FEB 11" on my order status.
I wonder...

Yeah, I wouldn't wonder until your ship date passes. Then just make that friendly call to Apple, ask for faster shipping, $100 off, or whatever rows your boat in terms of concessions and they will give you something. It is almost better to have them late on the shipping for all the money they are giving up on faster shipping and the $100 rebates.

But, I am not ignorant of the fact that the markup on the MBPro is probably 30% or more so a couple twinkies for the impatient folks isn't going to hurt them much.

Something you will notice, after a while with a big company, is that their concern for PR wanes. People new to Apple will genuinely pass it by if they believe that it is basically like all the other big companies that have gotten two big for their britches and need a bit of a shake down in the likes of decreased orders.

With Apple, this won't likely happen unless their products do not come through when accompanied by delays. A company can make up for bad PR when their products are second to none. We will see if this new MB Pro does this; else, it could be an interesting year for Apple with the SL and new iMacs on the horizon (oh and the CEO retiring).

I just noticed something...I can no longer change my "shipping address" on my Apple Order Status page. The link to edit my shipping address went from blue to gray with a message that says: "Your order cannot be changed online. Please contact Apple Sales Support." I can still change it for future orders (the address on file on my account), but I can no longer change it for this order.

A couple of days ago, the link was blue (I've kept track of it in case I decided to not have it shipped to my school directly). Can anyone else change their shipping address?

I guess I didn't notice this, but mine cannot be changed either (the shipping address that is).

They probably just printed the label already.

I ordered glossy and I have a short ship time (was the 9th, now the 19th) so I don't think that is it.
