...so after around 2 hours of being on hold, transfered around, and returned to initial prompts, I reached someone willing to admit the issue. They offered me two solutions, one, they would like to capture my laptop for engineer testing, in which case I will receive a new laptop. Two, they will overnight it both ways to a repair facility in which they will replace the screen with a non-issue screen. I attempted to get info on the brands, mentioning Samsung as the problematic display and LG as the non-issue screen, but did not get any details. I chose the option that was explained to me to have the shortest turn around time, screen replacement, which is all I'm interested in, the notebook is flawless otherwise IMO. I should receive the shipping box tomorrow...

still waiting... I'm going to call today, I may decide to attempt to return it completely, I am definitely beginning to regret trying Apple...

So are we out of the woods on this yellowing issue with new MBP orders?
Or is it still a problem?

As of week 36, we are not completely out of the woods. I posted above about a week 35 Samsung display that I thought I was seeing some yellowing (very slight) but nobody else saw it. Well, when I got my hands on an older C2D MBP for comparison and set the two side by side, the yellowing was very clear on the new one.

The manager at my local Apple Store was truly excellent, though. He let me exchange and open up the new one at the bar to look at. He was even good enough to look through his entire stock of 2.2 mattes to find the most recent build week he could, which was week 36. The exchange unit had no yellow, but the backlighting was terribly uneven. It was a Samsung display. He went back and brought out another one, we opened and booted. The backlighting was better but still not what you want. I don't know what kind of screen that one had, because I didn't even bother letting it finish its initial boot sequence.

I ended up getting a 17" and just paying the difference. Never should have gotten rid of my 17" anyway, and I told him I'm not convinced that the LED displays are currently the way to go, at least until Apple can get these problems sorted out.

Samsung seems to be the culprit. Looks like almost everyone with the LG display is tickled pink with their screen. Given the number of complaints leveled against Samsung screens with the last generation of MacBook Pros (grainy Samsung screens), you would think that Apple would either demand higher quality assurances or just drop the manufacturer altogether. Because not that many buyers know how to determine their screen build, so to them it's Apple's fault.

It IS Apple's fault, but only for not assuring the right level of quality in the assembled products.

Does anybody know how long it will take for my replacement to arrive? I know a lot of you have had experience with this. I just brought the yellowed one over to fedex today. Do they ship it as soon as they receive the old one. or will I have to wait the full amount of time that new buyers have to wait? Do they have a few that are already built that they can just send right away for people getting replacements? It wouldn't seem fair if I got bumped to the end of the line after already waiting to the 3 weeks to get the first one.

MBP 15.4" 2.2 Glossy (everything stock)

There is a definite difference in the display when viewing the two jpgs. A pale yellowish tint can be seen in the bottom box. This is the case when viewing it from any angle including straight on. I have not yet contacted Apple but will do so. Day to day use would be fine. I bought CS3 at the same time. This isn't going to work for me.

Just purchased Mac PRO. While looking up the screen found Model# 9C68= Samsung right?

Also why would by Serial Number be all 0's. "00000000"

Date is: C2110E00 What does that mean?

I am getting the yellow pee at the bottom.

Thanks really for this forum. Really helped me go with mac.

Thanks

Is it a glossy? I don't know if that is a Samsung. The author didn't give the Samsung string only two strings which are LG. Your serial number is found in the about box.

Go to the :apple: in the left corner.
Click on "About"
Click "More info"
It will be there.

Anybody know how long it takes to get a replacement? When will they ship it?

Apparently as long as it took when you ordered it 3+ weeks. If you bought it at an Apple Store they will exchange it for you right there. (provided it's the default model). Call Apple and ask, they are really friendly and want to help.

I also know that you should call Apple and tell them your FEDEX tracking number. That is the same thing as them getting it back in the ware house so it should save you a few days in shipping time.

Yea it is glossy..

Week 35.

Hey thanks for the reply. So this is one of the bad screens? I should take this back in right away? I just bought this today. I was a PC user so I don't know all the details.

Thanks Again

I received my MBP on the 20th, I'm in Australia if that makes a difference.

Its got a 9C68

Its a 2.4ghz with glossy and 2gb. Its pretty much standard.

I check out the images and like, yeah the bottom square is different colored but then when I position myself so that the bottom half of the screen is a my eye level, the top square becomes the yellowish square.

Are you guys sure its not just a positioning thing? LCD screens do have a "sweet" spot area and unlike LCD TV's, laptop screens aren't really designed with viewing angles in mind.

To make sure, I tried the test on my Samsug 931c 19" LCD on my desktop and again it gave me different colored squares for top and bottom, not yellow , but it all depended on my viewing angle.

It looks like I have a Samsung for my Apple not an LG. I wish the OP would clear up the error on the first post.

I am writing this while using a five year old Samsung SyncMaster 191T (19"). There are absolutely zero problems with the color. This is not a positioning issue. This monitor has the same color within a fairly large viewing angle. My MBP has the yellow issue at any angle including straight on. Why did they decide to go with this particular type of screen for the MBP?

Edit:
I switched the Mac to full screen color background and it was plain to see the problem. I would suggest that as a final test to someone. My moving over to Mac is sadly going to be delayed. I hope others getting theirs next week will report success.

Well i took my mbp , to apple store on tuesday and i have a samsung screen , with yellowness , so today it came back to apple store . i checked the repair status , looks like they did the job really fast , im more thatn sure some sort of surprise is waiting for me , either they didnt do anything , or probably installed another samsung display. I wish i bought 17 inch model , regular lcd was never more desirable than now.

Are you serious? Why should I have to wait an extra 3 weeks just because they have bad QC and sent me a POS computer? If something like this happened at a store, they wouldn't make me wait at the back of the line, they would bring me up to the front, because I already waited in line the whole time. If this is true, I am going to cancel my order. Screw Apple.

This is getting bad, so after spending 6 days without my mbp, i call the apple store and they go : "yeah we received ur laptop from repair center and the problem was not fixed so we had to send it back, for another 7 days!!!!!!!!!!!". meanwhile i checked apple website repair status told me that problem was fixed. This is getting frustrated, my 750 bux hp laptop has no any problems at all , boy do i regret draining 2500 bux, and on top of that dealing with apples Bs.

Yeah, Apple seems to have way more BS than most computer companies I've had to deal with.

This is an interesting clip below showing the problem. I believe he is filming the display and then editing it on another computer to show the tonal qualities are not correct.

I took mine into an Apple store today and they could not help me. I am "within specs". Their floor models are both LGs and do not have the problem. The manager agreed to open only one system to see if it had the issue. It did and was another Samsung. I suppose he will now sell the other unopened ones to people who are unsuspecting.

I bought over $300 in accessories just for the Mac and I will face a restocking fee of several hundred dollars if I want a refund on the laptop. I feel locked into this MBP purchase. I can deal with a microphone plug not working, or the USB's screwed up but how can any computer company sell a system with the very basic items not in perfect working order?
I am astonished into silence at this point. Good luck to the rest who are waiting.

Careful, you might get banned if you ask for another!

Yea, Apple repair was hesitant with me. My repair status said it was on hold, and that I had to call. Upon calling I was told that they could not duplicate the problem. I told them this made no sense as the genius saw the problem and authorized it. They escalated the case to "tier 2" so that someone else could look at it, and it was repaired. Of course, I'm out of town and my Mac is waiting for me back home. I'm curious to see if it's any better.

MBP 15.4" 2.2 Glossy

there is a yellowish problem in the bottom 1/3 when viewing the two jpgs.
I have a question,, if wanna ask for a replacement, do i need to keep everything, the box..etc and wait to send it back ??

I have the exact same computer as you, same week, Samsung screen, and everything. It has bad yellowing and I asked for a replacement. They send you a FedEx pre-paid shipping label and you just have to put EVERYTHING back into the original box, and put it into the ORIGINAL packaging, stick the label on and bring it to Fedex. However, I have no idea when they ship the new one. One agent at apple says I would have to wait the full 2-3 weeks to get the replacement, and another said they could ship it right away.

You can also try taking it into an Apple store for an immediate replacement. My system was not a "default" model because it had a glossy screen so they would only allow me to look at one possible replacement.

Classic consumer psychology in play. I was so lucky to get help that I left after it didn't work out saying "thanks for your help". :)

It depends on when you asked for the replacement. As soon as the replacement is authorized, your MBP gets into the line for production. However, for obvious reasons, Apple won't ship it out until they've received your return. One "trick" for those who are forced to do a return and want to spend the least amount of time without an MBP is to wait a week AFTER your return is authorized before sending it back. I wouldn't suggest waiting longer as Apple has to receive your MBP within 10 days. I did this and I had my new CTO MBP within a week (including the 4 day shipping time) of dropping my old one off.

Baseline for comparison:

Dell CCFL (regular) LCD screens. In other words, very average standards. At more than twice the price, I expect Apple screens to be better (even though I know they're all coming from the same factories in Asia anyway no matter the maker).

MBP #1: LG....but it was an open box with other issues keyboard issues, but the screen was pretty good, and as you will see, the best one out of them all. It just has a darker spot at the bottom left, but I can probably live with that.
week 27 +/- 1 week

#2: Samsung: urine 1/3. No doubt about it. Easily seen.
week 32 +/- 1 week

#3: Samsung: urine 1/3. Dead pixel.
week 33 +/- 1 week

#4: LG: 1/5 bottom is also yellow! And the backlight is not even. You can see the unevenness like little candles that are lighting up the screen. It is strange b/c this LG screen I could have sworn was a Samsung until I looked it up.
week 36

By contrast, I've had Dell screens that are certainly better than the Apple screens.

There you go. I'm going to try one more time and then that's it. Hold me to it. I've been buying from places that have return policies that are no-questions-asked. But this is getting ridiculous. They really need to fix these issues.

hey pufftissue

would you mind posting the week builds of those screens if you remember? Were they the more recent or older builds?
That is really appalling that after 4 notebooks you cant get a decent build, shame on apple, I hope things are better with your next one....

I just unboxed my brand new macbook pro that I ordered from Amazon.com and, guess what, the bottom of the screen is faintly yellow.

The display model is 9c68, week 36, matte

here's my question -- I bought this from amazon.com but I have a mac store about a half an hour away. Will they let me exchange this yellow one for a new one?

A quick reply would be great since I'm about to drive up there.

The only sticking point with me was the number on the box was not the one for the Glossy models in the store. They could not trade out numbers cleanly. Go, tell them Apple said they would trade them out. That is their policy. It's worth a try. (Look at the floor models to see if they have the problem and what type they are too.)
