Hello all, just a quick update. I said I would attach my color profile that looks pretty good after I got done fiddling with SuperCal (I totally understand that every screen is different ... but this is so much better then the shipping "default" calibration the MBP comes with new). So I'm making good on my promise, it's attached to this post. By the way, I have the LG screen, when I first got it, it appeared to have yellowing and the bottom 3rd yellowing ... no more! :)

The whites are white, blacks are black. At first I had a lot of blue hue with my calibration, but after a few goes I got that out. It looks super perfect now!

Again, it may not be perfect for you, however it may just be a good starting point to get the yellow out of you machine.

As I understand it the new displays are actually capable of a larger color gamut (I've read in some reports on the web, don't even ask me where! I just found them by googling around. It seems that some of this clor comes from in the yellow gamut and that may be way so many machines has a yellow tint.

Try SuperCal before sending your machine back ... its made the world of difference in my machine! It's taking me a couple days of tinkering with my calibration to get one that is not yellow and get the cold blue tent out, but it's been worth it ... its even, white, good color very clear. If i look at the screen from "keyboard level, yes there is a yellow tent do to color shifting ... but if you view the display from normal angles (like you would when you actually using it) ... no color banding at all, it looks great!

Good luck everyone!

your setting looks too yellow on my screen, a little bit toward red maybe :D Tht's good it worked pretty well on our screen (LG ? )
but it really fix that "1/3 yellowish" problem .. it really does. Maybe bacause it turns the whole part of the screen to that yellowish white so it fades.

I'll try supercal though... thanx

if your display is samsung try this :

it worked pretty well on my screen, but it just fixed the yellow cast... now I can see pure white on my web browser. Unfortunately the "1/3 yellow" is still there. I believe the only thing that can get rid out of that it is to exchange it at :apple: store

I know there are some pretty bad yellowing issues out there. My screen is not yellow when looked at straight on, but it is does show a slight yellow when I move my eyes down to the level of the table. Seeing that I never use the computer while my arms are over my head like a monkey, this is totally acceptable. however on the original calibration the whole screen was yellow with an emphasis on the bottom, with the calibration everything is good.

So I'm just saying my screen looks white and I'm happy with it! My very best advice is download SuperCal See what it does and if you get a good calibration out of it ... if not then I would take it back to the store. Good luck to everyone else!

Yeah, that one got looking funny to me to. I went back to the one included in this post. It doesn't have the blue turned down like the previous one I posted. I like it the best I think!

Anyway, happy calibrating!

Ok im not trying to hate on anyone but for the love of god, going back and replacing your macbook 2-3 times is ludicrous, bodering on utter insanity. I have the 2.4 MBP store bought back in late June, with the samsung display, and yeah I guess it a little yellower than the top but in all honesty if no one had pointed it out then I probably wouldn't have noticed. Now, if hypothetically these samsung displays got yellower with time, then I would be concerned. Yet there is no evidence of that, and Apple would most likely recall those MBP if that were the case.

Now I know we pay a lot of money and should expect quality, but as a former PC user now turned Mac addict, I think some be a little wee anal. Just my two cents. ;)

Maybe

Newcomer here but the facts are:

Week 32 LG display bought 5th Avenue straight off the delivery truck on 23/08/07. 15" matte, 2.2 GHz. (And if you can work out from how I wrote the date then I am not from NYC and I did save $400 on my 'home country' price).

The Screen:

Is it absolutely crystal perfect: No.
Is it good: Yes, no dead pixels and great to look at
Bottom 1/3 yellow: Don't think so. Sometimes I think its a bit darker but its not really the whole bottom 1/3 yellow, its more along the bottom and up the middle it looks a bit different...but then I change the angle of the screen and it looks different again...

I have also tried different profiles. I have tried some posted to this forum (e.g. (MacBook Pro 08-30-07.zip)) and created some with a Spyder 2 calibrator. (So its late and I'm new here and can't raise the energy to figure out how to post quotes and file attachments. )

Everything is better than the shipped profile. The ones I created look richer in colour though a bit red compared to both the shipped profile and the ones downloaded from this forum - but thats a straight comparison flicking from one to the other. The Spyder 2 profiles look great on their own being nice and rich however, all these things are relative since colour changes minute by minute as the environment it is in changes amd our perception of it changes with it. The downloaded profiles clean up the colour and are whiter - but for me there is such a thing as too white.

Conclusions from my experience matching other posters:

a) Some people truly have a bottom 1/3 yellow issue that is completely obvious but...
b) Some people are hyper sensitive and are being lead to believe they have the problem because they have spent too much time reading this thread and others like it, i.e. are looking for a 'problem' they wouldn't otherwise notice.
c) the screens aren't perfect but benefit greatly from profiling
d) No one profile is the ultimate answer

Hope that helps somebody.

Nick

Well I just got my third macbook pro led (week 34), this time supposedly guaranteed by apple to be yellow free: is it, yes and no 8)

It is true that the yellow is unnoticable now during any use but the specific test posted on this site, in which case still just SLIGHTLY, but that is not an issue at all.

However, the yellow is still there! apple have just found a way to mask it, and that is by boosting the brightness of the bottom led only greater than the top. This makes the display look whiter at the bottom. Sadly the downside is that the brightness is now a little uneven (this display also has some backlight bleeding at the bottom and a slightly dark patch near the top). But I must say, even if it has a brightness gradient now, thats much nicer than a color gradient as before!

I got mine today, and I've got no yellowing at all.

How do I tell what make my screen is? (Total mac newbie!)

did you upgrade the HDD ? you are so lucky cause with customized MBP, I think you have difficulties to go through exchange

congrats on your nice purchase

Thank you. I wasn't thinking about returns at the time. Had I read these forums any longer, I don't know what I would have done. I ordered mine CTO from Apple online.

The wait was bad enough, yellowing would have made it impossible :)

Just received my MBP 2.2 15" glossy yesterday. It is Samsung and I think the screen is great! I ran the tests and tried multiple viewing angles. Looking top down the bottom of the screen appears slightly darker and the same when looking from down up. All reasonable viewing angles are gorgeous. I used supercal and I was amazed at the improvement over the shipped color profile. I adjusted it to my liking and the colors really popped!

Samsung screen (provided I'm reading my codes right) and it's lovely! Hooray for my first Mac!

I was at Staples the other day and I checked out the Macbooks (not pro) and I went online and did this test.

For the Black, the bottom looks slightly darker than the top.

For the Grey, the bottom definitely looks darker than the top.

o.o;

I also did this test with the other laptops I saw (HP, Toshiba, etc...) (Their screens are so dam reflective/bright btw, aghh burnt my eyes)

For the Black, the bottom is the same as the top.

For the Grey, the bottom is still darker than the top.

Keep mind that I adjust my head so it was at eye level w/ the middle; so nothing there o.o;

Btw, their screens were so white/blue it was almost un-natural; even the yellow part where the stickies are on this forums is almost greyish...

I dont think we are being anal at all, I had a case of the yellow tint and the 1/3 yellow tint... I used supercal for the all over yellow tint, BUT the 1/3 tint was still there, tried to live with it, but replaced it for a perfect LG screen, and happy i did, those who think we are just anal, do not have the problem :)

Just my 2 cents :)

can people with good sceens in the 2.2 config confirm if they are matt or glossy please. it seems like glossy 2.2 are still bad samsungs

I went to the apple store (Suburban Square, PA) today to show my screen to a "Genius" guy. He took a look at it and agreed that the screen is abit yellow at the bottom and pale. He took the MBP in tha back room for couple of minutes, and when he came back he told me let's do the comparison with the display models. Thay had like four 15" models on the floor, all of them LG (2 glossies and 2 mattes.) I was surprised ... all of them had the same problem, and one of them was even worse !! then he came to a conclusion that this is within all macbook pros :D and he told me yours is fine, it's just them.

He also told me even the previous models were a bit darker at the bottom.

that's it ... case closed for me :D if there is a problem ... the solution is never bring anything white near the dock, I want to enjoy my new MBP ... LOVE :apple:

Matt, I received my 2.2 glossy Samsung yesterday and it is great. Supercal made it even better.
