That 2TB SSD hurt. If I drop that, can drop the price to a 'reasonable' $4000-ish.

$5299 is maxed-out 15" CDN price, without employee/student discount.

I could cry.

I've been limping along with my 2008 15" MPB with a broken screen, hooked up to my TV to make it work. It was top of the range at the time and cost just over £2000. Now, 8 years later with almost 0% inflation since then, the equivalent machine is almost £4000.

I was prepared to downgrade to a 13" to keep the cost down, but even that is approaching £2600.

It seems like they are trying to cash in on pent up demand. I can't justify that sort of money in the post PC world (sic).

But, I need a PC. I hate windows.

I feel sick.

When he said they had a replacement for the MacBook Air with no touch bar I knew that was the one. Then I saw the price.

Seriously, can someone explain why there was a $300 increase when it's basically an overdue redesign? I'd understand such an increase for the touch bar, but for this? Seriously? Goodbye, Apple.

Exact same feeling for me. I had already justified not having the Touch Bar to myself and was ready to bite the bullet. Then they announced the price and I put my credit card back in my wallet because I was ready to order and go pick up today.

If they had went with Kaby Lake you could somewhat justify the pricing, but a year old processor? WTF Apple.
I disagree. Kaby Lake isn't even ready yet for the type of machines Apple is releasing. Kaby Lake at this point would actually be worse TBQH. Just because something has a new name doesn't mean it's ready for prime time. Intel knows this and thats why there isn't a high end MacBook with it yet.

I can imagine Tim Cook's saying this... "We know the new MacBook Pros are expensive. And that's we know you're going to love them".

On the other hand, the pre-built prices are reasonable. To be fair, the standard setups are probably more than enough for 90% of users.

You know, you have to wonder, shortly after announcing shrinking profits we get new laptops with a brand new high price - seems a little to coincidental to me.

It's just the usual Tim Crook move. Slower sales? Slap a small upgrade on it and up the price way more then it was worth(*cough* iPad Pro)

Apple made a bad move with this one. Crazy expensive. I have an early 2011 and will be in the market this year for an upgrade as it's still kicking, but getting hairy at times.

I can make this machine work for longer...but I'll be going the refurb route if I do upgrade. Early 2015 model. I can't justify spending that kind of money for no big upgrades. USB-C is great...but now we can't even CONNECT OUR IOS DEVICES TO OUR MACS with the cable in the box! We'll need a dongle!

We've known it for awhile...but now they aren't even trying to hide it...

Apple = Hubris

I just don't know if I could make the switch over to Windows...and there's the rub.

Is it worth the money for someone who has never owned a Macbook before? Or is it still ridiculous?

For what you're getting, these are still reasonable compared to similarly spec-ed quality laptops on the PC side.

For example, check out Dell XPS13/15 for comparison.

Dell has more options with a 15" screen size.

Again, it's not the new tech. It's the fact that for $2400 you get a 256GB SSD and at $2800 it maxes out at 16GB of RAM (this one less important to me, but it's the same max as 4 years ago). iPhones come with 256GB of storage.

These will have an inevitable price drop and I'd be annoyed if I paid extra to have it now.

Right now they don't mention iris pro on the 15" model, which means graphics switching is most likely disabled. You'll see it return with the next generation. Right now I think they have priced themselves out of their own market. I couldn't deal with a 256GB drive, given the number of software packages that I use, which take up 8-20GB (matlab, LaTeX, etc). VMs make it even worse. Given that I said I wouldn't deal with Apple's terrible notebook gpu implementations ever again, I wouldn't touch this one either way. I'll probably see what happens in the refurb store, because my current one is on its way out.

They kept the old one around to hold down the $2000 starting price. It's still $2000, because they have everything below that earmarked as 13" territory.

I agree. I was going to buy the maxed out 15" and that's almost $4,000! WTH!

wow - yes over 3500 for what i want- yep no inflation here... that huge touch pad might make me crazy ...

15" has Iris Pro. It states this in the Graphics details and when you ask 'What is the right option for me' in the configurator.

My 2012 cMP still works great.. but the ram ceiling annoys me. This currently overpriced replacement option doesn't rectify that.

Four. Years. Later.

...and this is still a thing.

I love the idea of that Lenovo P50 with 64gb ram, but losing backwards compatibility with years and years of Logic Audio files isn't really all that appealing.
