Hey Julian

When you first get your new iPhone, it'll be still on our Text & Web tariff which includes free data and wifi.

From 1 October 2010, Text & Web will include unlimited Wi-Fi only. Excessive usage policy and terms apply, see o2.co.uk.

The more you top up, the more texts you'll get:

* Top up £10-£14. Get 300 texts and 500MB internet
* Top up £15-£29. Get 500 texts and 500MB internet
* Top up £30 or more. Get unlimited texts and 500MB internet

Hi Chris,

I just checked the text & web Ts & Cs and let me check that I've understood them correctly.

I hardly use my phone at all for outgoing texts or calls so I top up about £15 a year (yes, I did mean year). What I'm taking away from the above is that, for some one like me who hardly ever tops up, I'll get unlimited WiFi but I won't usually be meeting the £10 a month topup in the previous month criteria so I won't get any free non-WiFi data access.

My understanding of the current 3GS offer is that it is essentially an unlimited WiFi and data bolton free for 12 months with no requirement for minimum monthly topups in order to qualify for the freebie.

Have I understood correctly because, if so, then this new scheme is definitely less generous than the current 3GS offer.

Hi

I'm Chris from O2 Online Support, how is everyone this evening?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for coming on here - It looks like everyone is just a little bit upset with the new tariffs. Angry even.

Instead of worrying about the 3% of customers abusing data. O2's actions may motivate the remaining 97% to move to another network.

If O2's reasons for this change are genuine, then I'd humbly advise O2 to throttle the bandwidth of persistent network abusers.

I have been on O2 since the orginal iPhone launched. I had not considered moving networks until I saw this announcement. Now I have registered interest with Vodafone, T-Mobile in the last hour.

My first thought was, would this affect me? What is my current 3G data usage. But on O2's MyO2 website and in O2s app there is absolutely no way that I can see to check my historic data usage.

This seems perverse. Announcing a draconian cap on data usage, while at the same time not providing any transparency about that usage. My car has a gauge letting me know how much petrol I have remaining. Perhaps in this digital age, O2 could match that functionality?

We are being told that 3% of users are the transgressors. It would be a courtesy to let everyone know whether they are a transgressor or not.

chris, i'm confused. i know that i can keep my current 'generic' simplicity tarrif, request a mini-sim and use this with an iP4 PAYG but what i don't know is this: will O2 automatically change the T&C's in October so i lose the £5 unlimited internet bolt-on or will my T&C's remain the same until the day i choose to opt-out?

also a friend of mine who is an O2 employee told me he can sort a 'friends and family' discount for me. do you know how much will i get off my monthly tariff and the actual PAYG handset? i've been trying to get hold of him today to ask him but he's been busy.

You check your usage on your iPhone. Settings>General>Usage. It will tell you how much data you have used since you last reset your usage stats. If you never have, it will show how much you have used since you got the phone.

Remember if you have ever restored your phone this would have reset the stats.

also a friend of mine is an O2 empolyee and tells me he will apply a 'friends and family' discount. how much will i get off my monthly tariff and the actual PAYG handset - i've been trying to get hold of him ask him today but he's been busy.

I don't think the discount applies to the handset, especially as it's a PAYG device.

Chris,

I am paying £7.50 a month for Premier Insure, I've noticed it's now £15. If I upgrade, will I have to start paying £15?

I currently pay £45 + £7.50 a month. If I have to start paying 315 for insurance and then another £5 for added data(I use a fair bit of data, 400MB so far this month), it's going to get pricey :-(

Chris,

I'd like to purchase out my contract and upgrade, the reason for this is my upgrade date is 25th november, 2010.

I have 6 months left on my current contract at £30 a month. However I noticed that it can drop down to £20.

How do I take advantage of this offer?

A few of you may remember a couple of years ago, when the iPhone 3G was released, that customers who preordered from the Carphone Warehouse received their handsets on the Thursday morning, but weren't activated by O2 until Monday evening.

I set up a website at the time to provoke CPW/O2 into action, and it actually made it into a couple of national newspapers. Within hours of the story being published the phones were magically activated.

I've kept hold of the journalists details and I've sent them a lengthy e-mail regarding the new tariffs and how customers are being penalised. People are expected to pay a large amount of money for the iPhone (nearly £1000 over two years) and yet O2 are halving the number of inclusive minutes, charging for MMS and capping data. They're essentially selling us these brilliant devices and then pricing us out of being able to use them...

One of the national newspapers I've e-mailed has already come back indicating they'd definitely like to run this as a story. Let's hope the bad press O2 will receive will encourage them to look again at the tariffs offered.

I restored my phone on the 20th May (to go back to OS3.1.2)
According to the data count - I have downloaded 1GB.
It is simply not possible I have used as much as as that in less than a month.

I have reset the counter to measure my months usage.

Like I say, it would be courteous of O2 to provide us with this information on their site. If they don't, they stand to alienate many more people than the 3% they claim are abusing the network.

To jump on the bandwagon...

Chris,
My main issue with what o2 have done today is the 50% cut in data allowance, from a 1GB Fair Use, to a hard 500MB with instant charging for going over. Now, I get that the network has that fabled 3% of users hammering the data...so, under that 1GB Fair Use, why didn't o2 deal with those users on a case by case basis? Don't put a 500 limit on, leave it at 1GB Fair Use and deal with the users who exceed that as you should be doing anyway.

Now, I probably don't go through 500MB every month, but there is the occasional time when I do, which is why Fair Use exists, for those rare moments when you go over the limit one month.

Further, you are asking the same money for less. I go from 1GB to 500MB, and charged up the wazoo for exceeding with no flexibility, MMS charging and no international function. Sorry, but why should I pay o2 the same amount of money for less?

I have been on o2 since the original iPhone, and unless you can pull you fingers out and offer a reasonable, realistic deal that doesn't'penalise me for paying you £455 a year, I will take my business elsewhere.

Any answers Chris? Don't trot out the line about the 500MB being enough for whatever, answer the questions, or find somebody who can?

Good on you..! Here is a bulleted list of the BS O2 are trying to pull over past 6 months:

1. No longer do MMS use 4 messages - they charge 20p now
2. No longer do international texts (aka texts from abroad) use 4 messages - they charge now.
3. They've reduced inclusive minutes
4. They've increased the price of a standard 600min 18month contract by £5 to £40
5. They've halfed the data allowance.

How they can get away with this, keep their customers and stay out of the "negative" press is beyond me. Let the papers roll!

You can look at all your historical bills online and the data you have used each month through MyO2.

Hi Julian,

Yes that is correct.

Have you considered the Simplicity Option?

I think I got most of that into the e-mails I sent.

We British are the world's best complainers. We're also the world's best at complaining in the wrong places. Let's hope O2 see the error of their ways.

Did you restore to 3.1.2 from an iTunes backup? If you did it will re-import the usage stats from the backup so you need to take that period into account.

The tethering issue

O2 appears to want to charge a fixed price for a fixed amount of data.
Which could be considered reasonable.

But if that is the case why charge extra for tethering?

I am sorry but I am not going to break out a spreadsheet to work this out.
If O2 want to accuse some users of abuse, they can't keep the usage data a secret.

Let's go a step further...

If an iPhone app goes mental or downloads without my knowledge I can't be held accountable. Apple/O2 need to be telling us what app has downloaded what amount and when!

This is more likely then you may think. Say you subscribe to a weekly podcast which is around 10MB - what if one week they attach a large video or accidentally send a much larger version? You wouldn't even know it was happening.

Have you looked on O2's website? I can see my usage stats right back to 2008, but I don't know if everyone gets the same information.

To download anything over 10mb you have to be on wifi.
