Looking at my bills, I've used about 500MB in two months. That compares to the Cellular Data Usage counter on my phone which tells me I've used 2.3GB.

In my bills I see one entry per day between 9pm and midnight, and then one at midnight exactly.

O2/Apple are going to have to tighten this up to make it easier to understand I feel.

The usage data on the iphone for phone calls is way out, it always tells me i've used more talktime than my bills say i've used, so no reason to believe the data counter is any more accurate.

Well guys, I hope you don't find yourself in crap like I did:

As an industry, we’re doing an excellent job of coping with the increased demand. O2 alone invests £1 million every day in its networks as part of our effort to ensure that customers continue to get great performance from their mobile devices. At the same time, though, we’ve been working to hard to understand exactly how customers use data, so that we can predict and manage demand more efficiently

this paragraph makes me laugh from the chief execs pr stunt

ive found o2's data network terrible, 3g is very sporadic then itll drop to edge for a minute then to gprs.

its done it on the 3g and 3gs, by comparison my "3" mifi seems to perform pretty fast! why are o2 still struggling with this?????

Did o2 say the vast majority of customers use less than 500mb? Or the vast majority of iphone customers? Because if the former, that will be correct, as the vast majority of o2 customers gave standard phones that don't use any data at all!

If this new Data cap is for the user's benefit as O2 claims then they should be held accountable if we do agree to sacrifice some usage yet find no change in the network coverage. O2 should set definitions that allow users to switch networks, free contract termination and unlocking etc. if their coverage fails to improve.

Orange Network to follow O2 in doing away with unlimited tariffs
Orange is poised to scrap unlimited data plans from this summer, Mobile understands.

The network will be among those expected to follow suit, after O2 announced today that it would drop unlimited data for new and upgrading customers on 24 June when the iPhone 4 launches.

Industry commentators had predicted that operators would no longer be able to sustain ‘unlimited’ models as the strain on the networks increased.

CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood told Mobile following O2’s announcement today: ‘No operator can afford to have 3% of their smartphone users consuming 36% of data resources.

’It's going to be interesting to see how O2's competitors react to this. Now 3 has the iPhone maybe it will choose to compete with an unlimited offer for its users.’

Orange did not comment.

Just checked mine and i have loads of data transfer at exactly midnight

In the same boat, and when I sort by the amount of data used, almost all of the largest data transfers were these mysterious midnight sessions.

How can o2 charge us for transfers which we do not initiate or even have any knowledge of?

Also, as several people have previously mentioned, iAds use a load of data which we have no control over. People are going to be financially penalised for something they have no real control over, that is plainly unfair.

I quote:

Based on current usage patterns, 97% of O2 smartphone customers would not need to buy additional data allowances, as the lowest bundle (500MB) provides at least 2.5 times the average O2 customer’s current use.

I have just been told on the phone to o2 that as i an existing generic simplicity customer, i can switch to the iphone 4 and not change my existing service. i.e retain the unlimited data usage etc.

I pay £20 for 700mins and 1400 texts with an unlimited data pack.

The only feature of the iphone that i miss is visual voicemail.

Unless i am mistaken this is the only feature i will miss out on with the iphone 4???

I don't understand what you mean. By buying it PAYG of course you can keep your current plan.

Found my usage!

Thanks for all the help. What a badly laid-out website!

Anyhow - looks like I am not currently heading above 200MB - and that is with a bit of illicit tethering courtesy of MyWi.

So now all I have to be angry about is a halving my minutes from 600 to 300.

I like to give my custom to businesses that reward and value my custom. Not convinced that O2 really understand this principle.

I am therefore thinking my shiny new iPhone 4 might be happier on a different network.

C.

if only! but then again if they did this theyd have no customers!!!!!

id like to see a plan of o2's stating what they are doing and when its being rolled out! as their now gonna have such an improved network and were all going to be so happy to still see our signal repeatedly drop

mind you i may just use my 3 mifi and get the cheapest deal available from o2, best of both worlds then.....

It'll be "improved".

Hey Julian

When you first get your new iPhone, it'll be still on our Text & Web tariff which includes free data and wifi.

From 1 October 2010, Text & Web will include unlimited Wi-Fi only. Excessive usage policy and terms apply, see o2.co.uk.

The more you top up, the more texts you'll get:

* Top up £10-£14. Get 300 texts and 500MB internet
* Top up £15-£29. Get 500 texts and 500MB internet
* Top up £30 or more. Get unlimited texts and 500MB internet

Regards Chris
Will the current tariff for PAYG you have now of 12 months free 3G+WiFi, and then after that period pay £10/month. So I'm guessing you will have to top up each month to get Internet access.

At times when I didn't use my credit I enjoyed having a month off (or two!) not having to top up, and still have Internet included, even in the first 12 months, I just let my credit roll over.

In February I went over my 12 months, I put £15/month in and have the O2 Unlimited plan, and this month I have £30 credit as it has rolled over, so I didn't top up, and you took £10 out leaving me with £20 credit. Under the new system, I have to always top up to get 500MB of Internet access? I worry that I'll end up with lots of credit on my phone as it rolls over, could run in to £100s, which I can't do anything with as I do not make many calls/texts on my mobile.

Hi Chris,

I just checked the text & web Ts & Cs and let me check that I've understood them correctly.

I hardly use my phone at all for outgoing texts or calls so I top up about £15 a year (yes, I did mean year). What I'm taking away from the above is that, for some one like me who hardly ever tops up, I'll get unlimited WiFi but I won't usually be meeting the £10 a month topup in the previous month criteria so I won't get any free non-WiFi data access.

My understanding of the current 3GS offer is that it is essentially an unlimited WiFi and data bolton free for 12 months with no requirement for minimum monthly topups in order to qualify for the freebie.

Have I understood correctly because, if so, then this new scheme is definitely less generous than the current 3GS offer.

I'm in the same boat!

This is why I'm going with whoever can give me unlimited data:

That's me just about at 500MB and thats just over the last few days. All I do is browse and check email. Occasionally download an app but rarely. 97% of customers don't use 500MB in a month? Yeah, if that is 97% of ALL O2 customers, including my gran with her little call-and-text-only handset she cant use.

If I can't browse and check twitter without getting charged, then I can't continue with the iPhone.

Peter, that is currently an issue I am investigating (data calls at 00:00 of that size). If you don't mind, would you be able to help me investigate? A PM or msn/email to me would be fine if you do.

It really does concern me somewhat that we could be required to pay for any data overage resulting from those data calls. I didn't realise they could accumulate to that much.

iAds concerns me also; had a cursory google to get some data usage stats, came up blank. Has anybody heard any ballpark figures?

Between iAds and the mystery data calls, we could be left with very little to actually, you know, be smart with our smart phones. RIP Face Time migration to 3G, also.

Well, to be honest, this change isn't going to affect me much...

...because I don't get any sodding O2 reception where I live despite what it says on their bloody coverage map.
