Argh hate this new tariff. What I don't get is that on their twitter o2 say that less than 3% go over 500mb usage, well, if that is so then why both putting a cap on it in the first place??? keep it "unlimited" jeez

With Apple bringing out iAd, this means that more of my bandwith will be taken away that i didnt ask for, its almost as bad as someone coming to my door and asking me for money while they post Spam through my post box.

I hope that the other networks see sense and the chance to make money to gain the extra customers.

If not its a sim only deal and iPhone4 from o2:mad: but get it unlocked, or jailbrake.

I just meant sending pictures via email instead of MMS. As I guess everyone did before MMS came to the iPhone. 20p per picture just won't be acceptable for a lot of people.

I'm going to speak to o2 tonight. If they don't play ball I will probably take the route suggested by dog299 and get a cutter from eBay. The cheapest appears to be £15, delivered from China.

If ur handy with a carpet knife or sharp blade it's free :p

If giffgaff run on o2 though, they'll have to make some sort of change surely?

Hmm from giffgaff website:
"Free mobile Internet until the end of June 2010."
Well that answers that one doesn't it?

What we really need is the PAYG handset prices in order to start working out what is the best overall deal. But you all know that already so I suppose it's kind of pointless speculating until those prices are released...

This article has really just annoyed me.

They claiming that they're doing this to cap the 3% of users that abuse their network is complete bull****. I mean, come on - just cap / penalise them for doing so, don't screw it up for everyone else. They're using this money grabbing approach, and making it sound like it's "better for their customers" - it's so they can make additional profit through the sales of bolt ons.

And I get even more annoyed when they make statements like "they expect others to follow suit". This angers me to no end.

Please help:

- I’m currently on O2’s ‘generic’ Simplicity 30day tariff with my 2yr old Windows Mobile device - £25 for 600mins, Unlimited Texts and Unlimited Data.

- I want to remain on a 30day contract.

- This will be my first iP so I am trying to work-out the best strategy – I’m very unfamiliar with the way it’s sold, registered, tariffs applied etc.

- A friend who works for O2 is saying he can get me a staff discount. I also know someone who works for Apple and although they can’t get a discount on the handset they cover in-store iP sales and registration. Lastly, one of my relatives works for Tesco and can get a staff discount on their tariffs and perhaps the handset; she’s currently confirming.

Here are my queries:

? Given my current pretty cool tariff and these helpful mates, what is the best way forward for me?

? Will I be able to somehow use my current SIM if possible in an upgrade or PAYG iP4 handset purchased via O2, and get my O2 friend to apply his discount on the tarrif and if possible the handset…but will I get the visual voicemail and have access to O2 wi-fi hotspots nationwide?

? Or should I wait for Tesco to reveal their deal but when will this happen and will it be as good as O2’s offerings….chances are that Tesco staff discount will match what my O2 friend can get anyway….?

? Or is the best route to buy the handset via Appple when my friend is there that day, selling and registering them…any reason why this method may somehow be useful in terms of using my current SIM?

I’m trying to make a decision quickly so I can get my iP4 on launch day instead of waiting around – I’ve even made a list of apps that I will be installing the moment I get it! Can’t wait to finally have a 100% OSX and iOS set-up. The last bastion of my Windows days, my original Touch Diamond, is seriously annoying me  Thanks.

I am in the same boat as you re sim and micro-sim only time will tell. Can you add me to your Tesco mobile discount as a friend :p I like the look of the £15 one!

Patience is a virtue friend.

I'm also on the simplicity package, waiting till release day to decide who and what tariff I go with or whether I just buy the iPhone 4 PAYG.
Don't be fooled into thinking u'll get ur iP4 on release day, I waited 3 extra weeks the last time I pre-ordered.

Thanks guys - you're right - by not being obsessed by '24th June' and hanging around a little no doubt I will save some money and be happier.

I guess I will wait to see what hapopens and meanwhile I will just clarify with my tesco relative and O2 friend what kind of discount they will get.

Ps - Ideally, my O2 friend would get me a discount off a PAYG iP4, my current SIM would get cut-down and work perfectly, and everything including 'visual voicemail' and the unlimited wi-fi hotspots would be available to me...and i would live happily ever after...having ofcourse sorted out tethering so my little '10v badboy' can become my little mobile workhorse.

From O2s blog:
Q:
Will customers on old "unlimited" data contracts be forced to move to a capped limit once there minimum term has expired.

Posted by: Andrew | 10 June 2010 at 05:15 PM

Hi Andrew - if you're on an existing contract then you're welcome to stay on that for as long as you like. If you upgrade to a new phone however you would need to move to a new tariff.

I take it that this means that if you were to request a microsim for an existing data plan they will know you are upgrading your phone but if you just cut down you old sim and put it into a PAYG iPhone 4 would they know or class that as upgrading and put you on the new tariff?

Why are people comparing vodafones old simplicity tariff to O2's new one? How do you know Vodafone aren't gonna do the same as O2? Besides you can still get the old simplicity for iPhone until the 24th anyway so O2 is still a better deal than voda!!!

If giffgaff run on o2 though, they'll have to make some sort of change surely?
giffgaff are a subsidiary of O2, but they are a company in their own right and they decide what their tariffs are - not O2. Tesco for example don't have to follow O2's tariff pricing - even though they are part owned by O2 as well. giffgaff's data pricing was already better than O2's (their monthly bundles are cheaper than the equivalent simplicity rates plus they had no FUP for their monthly bundles and data outside bundles was, and currently still is completely free for a limited period), and they still are now.

Hmm from giffgaff website:

"Free mobile Internet until the end of June 2010."
That is specifically regarding their free mobile internet promotion which has been running for the last 6 months (for all their customers - regardless of whether they were using the monthly goodybags or not). The unlimited internet included in their goodybag bundles is completely separate and there are no plans to change it. Note that goodybag internet is not free - it's just included in the goodybag monthly charge.

I have just been told on the phone to o2 that as i an existing generic simplicity customer, i can switch to the iphone 4 and not change my existing service. i.e retain the unlimited data usage etc.

I pay £20 for 700mins and 1400 texts with an unlimited data pack.

The only feature of the iphone that i miss is visual voicemail.

Unless i am mistaken this is the only feature i will miss out on with the iphone 4???

Well said.

If you look at orange or vodafone payg sim tariffs, they don't compare to o2 at all. O2 are still currently the best option for payg customers ( if you buy your sim today )

On my wifes phone, I have a simplicity 12 month contract, I get 300 mins unlimited texts and unlimited data for £15/month, and I have confirmed this will not change on october 1st.

On my iphone I have a payg web and talk tariff. I've just activated a sim I got with an iphone in december, so I now get 12 months unlimited data for free.

For me, O2 has and continues to be the cheapest and best option.

O2 Support

Hi

I'm Chris from O2 Online Support, how is everyone this evening?

I am here to clear a few things up and take questions from you that may have concerns over our new tariffs.

I see that the major concern is the Data Limit's

The "Unlimited Data" was a promotional offer when the iPhone was first released which was made clear in your T&C's of your contract.

However the "Unlimited Data" was never really "Unlimited" as under our fair usage policy there was a 1gb limit which again is in your T&C's of your contract.

The new imposed Data Limits are only for customers joining or upgrading with O2 on or after June 24th 2010. Your current plan will remain as it was until renewal.

Majority of our customer's will have nothing to worry about, the average usage is 200mb month and with only 3% of our user's using over 500mb so you will not notice a difference.

These steps have been brought into place to make improvements on our network to make the end result a better place for our customers.

Regards Chris

( Please note i am available until 9pm GMT )

Sorry Chris, but it's clearly a method of generating more revenue. Stop blaming it on the 3% that "abuse your network". How about you guys start imposing sanctions on them. Oh, wait a minute, that way you won't be able to sell these new internet bolt ons.

You've just there said yourself that the current FUP is 1gb, why reduce it? We're taking a step backwards here, just as has happened when you started charging for MMS, and stopped internatal texts being worth 4 normal texts.
