Otter, you're freaking HILARIOUS

Otter;

For the heck of it, and since I'm desperately trying to avoid doing my homework, I checked out your website. Your waffles review made me blow a snot on my powerbook, you bastard!

Seriously, thanks for the crackup. That made my day.

~D.

Thank god they're doing this again... I got tons of free songs last time! A lot of people complained about not getting any caps... but hell here in Indiana we had loads of 'em.

Bring it on again!

With iPod so ubiquitous, now would be the perfect time to re-release the Pepsi-iTunes promotion. There is enough mindshare now to actually make it work. :)

here's to hopin'

hopefully what with this bottle leaking out already, maybe that means the production will be much higher than last time and will actually reach all areas...

hopefully anyway...

Pepsi and general sugared soda really isn't healthy at all for anyone to drink, especially kids. I have kids of my own, and I don't allow them to drink sugared water. I do wish corporations would allow for healthy drink alternatives instead of going for the easy dollar. My rant.

iPodlounge has the details

Hey

Check out iPodlounge.com !

I know that a lot of this is already known from the great pics from otterpop, but this seems to confirm everything. (iPodlounge does not like to post rumors, so they obviously trust this to be fact)

"Apple to launch new Pepsi-iTunes promotion
Apple will kick off another promotion with Pepsi later this month to give away 200 million free songs from the iTunes Music Store and nearly 2,000 iPod minis. Apple revealed details of the new promotion earlier this evening on its Web site, but later removed the page. As readers may recall, Apple and Pepsi launched a huge promotion at last year's Super Bowl to give away 100 million downloads. The two companies also recently launched a similar promotion in Canada.

Starting at midnight on January 31, consumers will be able to look for codes under the caps of specially-marked 20-oz. and 1-liter bottles of Pepsi products for alphanumeric codes and a "Free song" message, which provides one free song download from the iTunes Music Store. After redeeming your free song code, you will automatically be credited with one entry in the iPod mini sweepstakes, which will give away one iPod mini every hour (24 a day) from February 2 to April 11, with one final drawing on May 2. Apple said it will be giving away approximately 1,700 iPod minis--all of which will be silver with an engraved Pepsi logo on the back.

Free iTunes downloads must be redeemed by May 23, while the iPod mini sweepstakes period ends on April 30. Apple said the odds of winning a free song are 1 in 3 and that code entry limits are 10 per day or 200 total. The company said the odds of winning the daily iPod mini drawing depends on the total number of eligible entries received that hour/day. According to the official rules, all non-winning entries will be eligible for the next day's drawing and all subsequent drawings.

Game pieces will be printed underneath caps of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Wild Cherry, Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew Code Red and Sierra Mist and under the rim of specially-marked 32 oz. and 44 oz. fountain cups available at participating locations. It should be noted that last year's promotion did not include Mountain Dew products, which many complained about.

Like last year, Apple and Pepsi are expected to air a new commercial for the promotion during the Super Bowl on February 6. An official announcement from the two companies regarding this year's promotion should be dropped tomorrow. "

That's odd. There are no Pepsi-logo-engraved iPod minis (what Apple and Pepsi will be giving away starting next month) in the MacRumors Marketplace or on eBay yet. In Internet time, things move so fast that I expected to see them already. I'll give it another hour and check again. ;)

Great find, otterpop! Looks like you're famous now. Although since you're in Oregon and Steve's in California, I'd watch out if I were you. :)

Hopefully they will eventually post the fact that it was otterpop broke the story some 20 hours before them, or at least that it was on Macrumors' front page some 5 hours before their story was posted...

Why do they insist on using the 20oz bottles again!? Around here you really only find 24oz bottles, and that's what I always buy in 6 packs. Some stores sell individual 20oz bottles, but those are like $1.50 each and are stored in refrigerators near the register. 6-packs of 24oz bottles are like $2.50, and are stocked on the shelves in much greater supply than the lone 20oz bottles.

Maybe it was somebody else..

Yes, otterpop did break the story here on MacRumors. However, iPodlounge credits Carlos Pero for breaking the story to them and giving them the link (which I assume was still up at the time).

According to his site, Carlos Pero posted the link and info on his site at 16:29:38.

But yes, otterpop definitely deserves a lot of credit for getting the pics and for being one of the first on the story!

Thanks otterpop for all the awesome info that you have been providing to us here.. I can't wait to get a bottle of my own!

'cause its about making MONEY, they are not giving away things for free you know

Just to clarify a little,
The caps are yellow, and they are much harder to see into. I have had no luck thus far. Im going back over to the store in a couple minutes and will get more.

About the prizes, I have already won a song and a buy-a-liter, get a liter free.

Not bad for only buying 2 bottles.

Bart: "Think About the Ironing..."

Kinda ironic, wouldn't you say?

Last year, Pepsi got it's tail flamed because it didn't get the bottles out in time. This year, Steve's probably downing bottle after bottle of Coca-Cola because Pepsi was over-prepared!

I see Sculley leaves his mark everywhere!

Hardly any bottles of the soda were taken since last night.
Again, let me be first to point out...tipping still works.

due to file size, linked image only of winning caps

I didn't want anyone redeeming my winning cap before i can, so i blurred it out. Thanks to my mad photoshop skillz.

Hear that sound?

Can you hear it?

It's the voices of a thousand Ebayers rejoicing yet another round of "$20 per lot of 25 bottle caps" auctions.

Dejavu all over again, one year litre. (Err...later).

Now, some folks on this thread have correctly pointed out that last year's iTMS/Pepsi collaboration was more or less flat, not bubbly.

But remember: many more iPods have been sold in 2004 than in 2003.
Can't recall the ratio, but if Steve Job's iPod sales numbers at SF Expo '05 are to be believed, then we just might see a much more successful iTMS/Pepsi promo this time around.

I still remember last February (and I commented on it here) when I went snowboarding with my son and noticed lots of neglected, unused yellow caps scattered on the tables of the ski lodge.

Perhaps more people will be taking notice of those orphan caps this season.
Mt. Hermon ski lodge in Maine is probably as good a barometer as any....

LAME RUMORS DAY

Is this the best Apple can do? What happened to the breakout box? Notice that Garageband2 has the ability to record multiple inputs. I wonder, pray tell what hardware we can use?

I kinda wish Apple would team up with like, Aquafina or Dasani for this promotion. I don't drink soda too often, but I down about 6 bottles of water per day. (Don't worry, I recycle. :))

Anyway, I might have to take up drinking diet Pepsi the next few weeks. Kudos to otterpop for bringing us this story -- sorry we all chuckled and said your soda was old. ;)

Recycling is relatively good.... but dude, get a nalgene, save youself several bucks a day, and the energy used to remelt plastic...

oh wait, you live in california...

nevermind, better buy water.

Does pepsi have a water brand to pair up with, though? that would be extremely cool. At this point, though, I have to say, I don't think this promo matters too much- redemption rates are puny- but I do think it's good, b/c it can't hurt, and it'll get more AAC out there, which we desperatly need...

so you have a (1 in 3) + (1 in 6 of getting 2 in 3) chances to get a free song

Actually the probablity is 1/3 + (1/6)(1/3) + (1/6)^2(1/3) + (1/6)^3(1/3) + ....

(this is just a test of mac users nerdyness. Will I be contested, will the contest be correct, or not, and will somebody figure out what the probablility actually is (it's not that hard of math, particularly if you've taken a few calc classes.))

California's chief concern (SoCal, anyway) is whether they will even get the promotion before it expires, like last year.
