Why do they claim it's an upcoming iPhone 4S?

If anything, the outdated proximity sensor (the one used in the pre-production white iPhone 4) and iOS4 indicate it's one of those, which were released to developers before the final white iPhone 4 came out.

The pics came out without real explanations from a chinese microblogging site (like twitter), and people pretty much made the assumptions themselves.

No credible rumors point to a iPhone 4S being made so far, it's mostly analysts trying to guess.

It would only make sense after last year's lost iPhone 4 drama to put an A5 in an iPhone 4 case for testing purposes (at least for outside Apple's campus), instead of using the actual iPhone 5 case.

Do you read? This could be using iOS5. I don't know if it's legit or not, but it definitely could be running iOS5.

iOS5 (b3 and newer) does not have the connect to iTunes screen. So no its on iOS4 - I think the same. Maybe its not even equipped with a a5 chip - i can't read hardly anything because of the light is exactly on the chip... one could think its shot that way so you can't see what chip it is.

why?
They can sell as many of the current model they can make.
Apple are not like other companies churning out rubbish updates to devices every two weeks to try to stir up demand.
They have broken the mold of the past moblie phone industry, hence their success.

but teh fanboys want moooooaaaar!!!

I'm not buying the A5 in this phone, it doesn't look like the A4 that Apple put inside the iPhone, and certainly doesn't look like the A5 Apple put in the iPad.

Well... the printing on the A5 shouldn't be a criteria, since it often changes. What doesn't change often during one generation is the board layout though and I say:
This thing is legit, or at least a very good fake.

Why? Well... why don't you just compare board layout?!
The supposedly leaked photo of the "iPhone 4S" board

compared to the actual iPhone 4 board:

Now there are clear differences! Now let me point them out for you...

Clearly, this is no iPhone 4!

@Mods, maybe you should point out the differences visibly to everyone in your frontpage post yourself or use my image if you like. Because Most people aren't buying something like this without comparison!

There is ZERO proof in that photo that this is something new. You cannot see the A5 anywhere in the photo on the hardware. It's just an iPhone 4 opened up. Possible an old prototype.

A5 IS in the photo. Also, the battery is upgraded as well as the larger reverse camera. Most likely this is the iPhone 4S

...This seems legit. So the question is: is this the only new phone we're getting? It seems odd that apple would release two completely different A5 phones

I fully agree.. I kind of fear this will be the only thing we'll see, but I just can't believe it. If so, I suppose I'll still get it since my old trusty 3GS has reached its limites performance wise. Yet, I'd be a bit disappointed to net get anything "new" - but that is just the gadget-freak speaking. In the end, the performance upgrade is the most important thing!

For all those who say it's not runnig iOS5:
The photographed device could very well be older than the first stable iOS5 builds. They most probably used iOS 4 or something inbetween on these.

here a new comparison... I think everybody can make out the differences themselves!

as for the chip, can't get more out of it then this:

But I doubt anyone cares much for the revised iPhone 4. Why not just wait for the new design that everyone wants? I don't see a justification for deviating for the previous method Apple has been using. If they did what you said, they could have announced in June, right on schedule.

Like I said, because it costs money to let the 4s just sit there.

Boring! give me iphone 5. 15+ months for a multi billion dollar company they should have a line of 10 iphones by now

I continue to believe there are 2 phones being introduced. Given that assumption, there is quit a lot of stuff Apple is tackling in a single launch: iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, Addition US carrier(s), iCloud and iTunes Match (including firing up their new data center), iOS 5, iCloud integration into Lion (which itself was released only 2 months ago), iCloud support in Windows... whew.

That's really pushing things pretty hard all at once. The delay makes perfect sense in that context. Plus, Jobs resigned just a month before the launch is to happen.

The fact that the phone is requesting connection via iTunes for activation means that the phone is running on ios4, since ios5 doesn't even require you to own a computer. Odd no?

Not true.. iOS5 phones may require connection to iTunes as well.
