I think $299 would be the price of the base model.

iPad (Retina) starting at $499
iPad 2 starting at $399
iPad Mini starting at $299
iPod Touch starting at $199

I see this selling for $299 for 8GB, $100 increment for 16GB and 32GB. Probably won't offer the 64GB.

$130 more if you want LTE.

iPod Touch Replacement

In a few months I'll be looking at updating my iPod Touch (4th Gen). One of these would be very tempting. More screen. Be able to surf without needing a magnifying glass. More power. As the ability to put it in a pocket is not that critical to me this is very tempting.

if it isn't 199, expect them to completely blunder their sales goal. 250 would be OK, but anything more than that, i really doubt people are going to spend money it. might as well just get an iPad with retina display and a more powerful processor and better graphics for a a little more.

Seriously. I expect they will come in at $250 or less, plus the iPad price will drop as well to address the new Kindle Fire.

If this and all the iPhone rumours turn out to be spot-on, I don't know what it says for Tim's "doubling-down" on security. They nailed it with Mountain Lion, but this looks less successful.

I'm hoping the rumours turn out to be as wrong as the teardrop iPhone was, last year. Otherwise, a stretch-4 form factor, will just hand the market to Samsung, maybe even me - if voting with my $ is the only way to get Apple to listen.

Going to be interesting to see Tim spin this to Apple's advantage - beautiful screen doesn't cut it when I try to show photos to grandma and she's squinting at something the size of Jony Ive's dick. "That's very nice young man, now show me the real one."

It doesn't really make sense to use a non-retina display. Apple is pushing the retina trend to all its products. Sooner or later I mean. It started with the iPhone, then the iPad, now the Macbook Pro and eventually the iMac line as well.

And considering that Apple will *probably* drop the 3GS line, ALL the iPhones being sold, are be retina. Then eventually they will drop the iPad 2, remaining the new iPad (retina) and the iPad mini (retina?).

If they also release the MacBook Pro 13" retina, it's very likely that the will eventually drop the normal MacBook Pro line next year, or all MacBook Pro = retina.

Lets see. :)

Does'nt make sense to me either, why would Apple be touting Retina and moving all their products too it and leave this new Ipad with a standard display. If they do this I will probably pas as you know the next revision of it will get the retina.

Nope I bet $199 for 16gb, $299 for 32gb, $399 for 64gb

And if they were smart these would have 3g for no extra charge

Looks waaaay to ****** to be a physical mockup. My $0.05 is that this is rather a 'dummy' made for accessories display, picked up in the phone accessory market in Shenzhen, China.

For apple, a "retina display" is when they've reached a point where pixel density is so high that it's hard to distinguish the pixels from sane viewing distances. I'm sure they threw out a PPI number when they launched the iphone 4.

Ipad's OS is really only made to support two resolutions. The old 1024x768 and ipad3's 2048x1536. The latter resolution chosen because it's easy to scale up all existing applications and UI times two rather than starting over with a tailor made resolution.

However putting a 2048x1536 panel in a 7 inch tablet would cost a lot, and you would end up with a more PPI than the 9 inch. It would be hard to sell the mini for a cheaper price than the 9-inch ipad if they put such an expensive high end panel in it.

The ipad mini will (if it's a real thing) be smaller than the regular ipad, so 1024x768 on 7" will lead to smaller pixels compared to the 9" ipad 2. Maybe not "retina-class", but most likely it will be perceived as good enough.

I like the size. I've been trying to justify the purchase of an iPad since the beginning, but I couldn't.

which is funny because when it was released the pundits expected a $1000 price point...the $499 surprised everyone by being a lower-cost item.

me, my thinking is -- if you think youll get value from a tool, then the tool is worth its price.

Stupidly impractical.

I understand that large bezels are unattractive, but it is just far too small down the sides.

Unless the multitouch software in iOS is getting a significant boost, I can imagine your left or right thumb becoming a giant pain in the ass.

God help you with an iPhone then

They don't have to address the kindle fire.

"Our product is cheaper than yours" is not a good marketing strategy.

"Our product is worth $100 more than yours" is how apple has been successful.

But didn't we also expect an Intel x86 OSX device back then? They released something that was hardware-wise much weaker than what some of us thought.

In for 3 at that price. $299 LTE will also get a buy.

I'm almost tempted to hold off on getting my "5" this week to see how this new mini will play out. A mini with LTE would suit all my needs and I could ditch my phone all together.

Interesting thought there. Could I run around with an iPad Mini and a dumb cell phone? When surfing web, checking emails, using Apps, the Mini would be superior. While when making calls and as far as taking up space in pocket, the dumb cell phone would be better. Also, I could really "disconnect" by going out just with dumb cell phone which I can't do with my iPhone.

I'm unlikely to go this route, but it is interesting.

ah, so youve used their prototypes, then? oh are you just talking out of your....?

8" ought to be enough for anybody.

I like how its called a mock up. Lets call it what it is until apple actually releases it. Its a FAKE iPad. I will believe it when I see it. There is a new Iphone event tomorrow not a ipad mini event. We'll See.:rolleyes::eek:

I can say it looks better than 10" iPad for whatever reason. If it also has 200+ DPI I wouldn't get another iPad but this Minis.

Current iPad gets heavier as soon as you realize it.
