There aren't and there will never be any new powerbooks / ibooks before the intel ones come out. Deal with it if you want one buy one now. Otherwise shut up and wait.

Geesh, someone's in the wrong thread.

Can anyone tell me what is the restocking fee for a pb if i decide to return it after opening it?

also, i ordered a pb a week ago and it did not ship on time, and the order status changed from prepairing shipmnet to prcessing order. i called them and asked to ship it when they have it(the alternative was to cancel the order) after that i received my pb in 2 days, but it was shipped not from china but from tennessee.

does this, in any way, indicate that there is a new version coming?

I for one am going to stand beside Spellflower on this one and believe they are coming out next week.

Thanks for the support (but if they don't come out, don't blame me- I'm just reporting what I know).

I've been waiting since May, and I'll be mighty happy if I get not only vindication for putting off my purchase, but a newly designed machine and a free ipod and printer rebate.

I'm currently 3.5 weeks through a 5 week summer term, and there have been a few times when I really could have used my own computer instead of having to hike to the lab. I decided to wait until mid August and then buy no matter what so I'd have time to learn OSX before school starts again in Sept.

This time it really does look like it's for real, though. My friend says that Apple told them to hold all their stock of ibooks so they don't have a mob of angry purchasers marching to their store torches in hand on the day of the update. I haven't tried it, but it would be an interesting test to call around and ask other non-apple retailers if they have ibooks in stock. If they say no, it might mean that they just aren't willing to sell what they do have until after the update to avoid unpleasant situations.

Also, according to my contact, Apple will likely give retailers checks to enable them to discount current stock (I don't know by how much). So even if you think the current ibook perfectly suits your needs, it might save you some $ to wait until the update.

As always, remember, these are just rumors. This site is called "Macrumors.com" for a reason. :)

Oh, and as for the existence of rumor sites, true, they probably would exist even if apple announced release dates, but I for one would care a lot less. I'm not as concerned with future products that might happen as I am with current ones that will certainly be recieving updates, such as ibooks. I'm obviously not as skilled a businessman as Steve (if I were I wouldn't be on this forum because I would be so rich I could afford to buy a laptop now and upgrade in a week if updates came out), but I don't think it would cause such a hoopla if apple just came out and said "We are (or are not) working on an update for the ibook planned to come out before the mactels." If they said they weren't, then we could all buy current stock and not worry, because we'd know it would be a while till they could design, test, and release something new. If they were, we could decide if it's worth waiting for or not. As for future products, who would blame apple for saying they were working on something but then never actually getting it to market? Would there really be more people upset about this than already are about buying an 8 mo. old computer two weeks before an update? I don't think so. IMHO it would be much more responsible of apple to let us know when to expect things, and to reduce prices of old stock toward the end of the cycle. It's not revolutionary, it's how most businesses do things. But what do I know, I'm just a consumer.

So this friend doesn't work at an Apple retailer? This is a 3rd party company?

I'm sort of curious how the Apple store keeps it a secret. They no doubt have to get the shipments in a day or two in advance don't they? How do they keep it a secret from the employees? Seems like the day before an update, there should be a lot of info coming in.

I agree! I've worked retail (clothing and Sharper Image) and the managers get notified of how many pallets will be shipped/ brought in. Apple can't seriously keep that information away from the managers! They gotta make room for the stock in the back and/or have enough staff on hand to change out the inventory. But man, Apple sure is a pro when it comes to keeping their employees from blabbing.

Yeah, he works at a 3rd party store that's been selling apple products since before "apple store" was a household phrase. I too wonder how the hell apple keeps its secrets, as my friend certainly wasn't required to sign any non-disclosure agreements when he took his job. It may be that the ibook is just so obviously due for update that the secret just isn't that valuable anymore. It's one thing to know the release date a month or two in advance, but it's another story when you find out a week before but don't even know the exact day.

Well, I just called my local Apple retailer and they told me they had the iBook in stock. The person on the phone seemed enthusiastic about it too. Was kind of hoping to hear them tell me it's out of stock, new shipment on Tuesday or something.

Location of annonymous friend's 3rd party store

It could be mid 2006 before the intel portables come out. You don't really think Apple would go 20 months without updating the ibooks, do you?

They could 9months in so far

Sorry, that would be telling, and I don't want to get too specific lest my source get outed.... just kidding. The store is a country bordering a country with a deciduous flag.

Fast find! Oooh, I'm getting so excited! The updates have to be here soon!

Yes im started to get excited, maybe as excited as when Jeff Kent hit the Game 5 NLCS walk off home run last year for the 'Stros. I almost cried. Ive been waiting along time. (I waited thur last year's cram & jam promotion w/ because of the possibility of G5PB's, but with Mactels coming out i came to the realization me waiting that long would be a bit crazy.)

what i mean is, do you think they are going to make a widescreen 12' as well. im buying an 12' ibook regardless of update once i get my next pay check (two weeks). hopefully its updated by then, if not, i dont care. the only thing i would want is a better video card, and i guess widescreen if they did that to the 12'.

My guess is that the superdrive is standard on both the new iBooks, and there are two sizes - 12" widescreen and 14" widescreen.

If the resolution is the same, I'll be getting the 12" widescreen, hopefully at 1280x768 or thereabouts.

If the resolution is different ... I don't know.

I'm very interested in the new line-up of Mac Minis though, I wonder what the differences will be.

Next week will be interesting for sure.

Well, except the Intel rumor.

This is very exciting. There have never been more signs than there are now for an iBook update next week (tuesday probably). After waiting so long it is such a relief to finally get noticed by some of the rumor sites.
What sucks though, is that on tuesday I am leaving for out of town, and wont have access to a computer, so I dont know if I will be able to look at (hopefully) new ibooks online. O well, I guess ill just wait till I come back.

i really hope this happens within the next two weeks. a widescreen super drive 12' would be beyond my expectation. i have been waiting all summer for this baby.
