My guess is that the superdrive is standard on both the new iBooks, and there are two sizes - 12" widescreen and 14" widescreen.

If the resolution is the same, I'll be getting the 12" widescreen, hopefully at 1280x768 or thereabouts.

If the resolution is different ... I don't know.

I find it hard to believe the iBooks will get a superdrive standard when it's not standard on the PB yet.

But, I notice that the rumor is essentially stating no price drop (at least on the 12"). I think it's entirely possible that they will have added features as standard to make an "effective" price drop. Making BT standard, 5400RPM drives or Superdrives I guess would all fit that bill, so I guess maybe....

As far as a 12" widescreen, if they go with something like 1280x768, I wouldn't be disappointed. But if they go with 1024x600 or something, that would stink.

yeah thats what i was thinking, i doubt the SD will be standard. but then again, there is only two non BTO prices, so maybe it will be.

i really dont think the SD will be standard either, because as someone said before, they are not even standard on the Powerbooks yet.
I think they are just going to put it in as a BTO option. I think by doing this, it will help keep the simplicity that apple strives for. When a comnbo drive and a super drive model are seperate at the buying screen the two different choices look almost exactly the same and for the average person, it would be difficult to distinguish between the two.

No SuperDrive standard. According to Think Secret it will just be a built to order option. This is what they should do with the 12" Powerbook too. Don't have seperate model number for the SuperDrive. This is smart on Apple's part. The iBook will have the Combo Drive standard with SuperDrive Optional. Maybe in the Powerbook revision they will have the SuperDrive standard on the 15 and 17 but not the 12.

On the Powerbook, you need to have a standard configuration 12-inch, with Superdrive. Why? A lot of people buy Macs, from retailers other than Apple.com and Apple Retail Stores. These professionals need a superdrive, and they cannot go through Apple directly. I'm pointing this out, for I am one under this category.

Here it is!!!

I'm very interested in the new line-up of Mac Minis though, I wonder what the differences will be.

Next week will be interesting for sure.

Sorry - couldn't resist.

G5 mini next tuesday... :p

FWIW, shipping time at the Apple Store on the iBooks just jumped from "Estimated Ship: Same business day" to "Estimated Ship: 5-7 business days" tonight.......

...it COULD mean that they don't want to have to deal with a bazillion unopened and returned iBooks if the update occurs within the next 5-7 days.

5 days would be...ummm.... NEXT Tuesday!

I'm no expert at reading tea leaves, but this looks awfully suspicious.

Steve Jobs, thou has forsaken me for too long,
The drought can no longer belong,
The new iBooks are from beyond.

No More Drought:

"Oxymoron Drought"

So, lets recap:

1) Various sites are saying that an Ibook update is very near.
2) Various people are saying that they know a person who works for Apple and knows the Ibooks will be updated next week. (or something close to this scenario)
3) The shipping time for a stock Ibook in the US store is now up to 5-7 days.

The only thing I am left wondering about is if the picture of the snowboarder that currently graces the background of each Ibook on the Apple online store will be changing. If it does, I wonder what it will be?

Maybe I should start a thread with the title "New Ibook background photo next Tuesday?" I'm sure the moderators would be happy with that one. :D

ANother noob question, didn't want to start another thread with it, but, why is 5-7 days shipping time an indicator that an update is imminent?

Because historically it has been that way. Plus, because the iBooks and Mac minis are due for an update, the 5-7 day wait strongly supports the theory that there will be updates.

5 Days is Tuesday, but 5 *Business* days is Thursday.

Anyone have a sense how much the discount is likely to be on the discontinued iBooks once the new ones are out?

Also, would the "Student Union" promo likely still apply to discounted/discontinued models?

I would guess $50-100 drop on the current models.

And yes, the promo should cover it. Just read the rebate right now and I'd expect those terms and conditions to continue to apply (it would create quite a mess to make another rebate form). I would also expect that you can go and buy the discounted old model and use the rebate on it if you really like.

Knowing Apple, I'd say $100 - $200.

Yes. Probably? Not sure.

The rebate says: "This offer is not valid w/ the purchase of used equipment, reconditioned equipment, demonstration units, or refurbished equipment."

So I guess it just depends under which heading Apple would choose to place the current models.

If its a minor bump would you still buy it?

Just wondering if iBooks were released with a minor bump say a slight increase in CPU speed and a faster HD but same graphic card and same form(non-widescreen) ...would a lot of you out there still buy it or go the way of a PB?

I'm so excited, I really think the updates are here, this update may turn me around for an iBook instead of PowerBook, but hell, I think I'm still going to go with the PB.

When I go to apple.com, either the regular product page or the ed store I see ibooks with blue streaks on their screens, not snowboarders. I'm not sure if I've ever seen snowboarders, come to think about it. I think there was some discussion about this some months ago, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

You must be talking about the product page in the Apple Store online. Yes, that does have blue streaks. But what we are talking about with the snowboarder is on apples website, click on the Apple tab, then click harware in the bar underneath all of the tabs. Then, click on iBook G4. that's where the snowboarder is. ;)
