Now that Apple has expanded on screen sizes there'll be less money on the table for other OEMs.

People who wanted big screens now have virtually zero incentive to move to Android and those who left for a bigger screen are probably going to return too.

Seems that Samsung is launching a desperate offensive because
a) Their sales declined this year with the S5.
b) The Note which pretty much owned the Phablet market, will now be facing the mother of all competitors.

Samsung is obsessed with Apple. It seems a little desperate. Makes no sense, Samsung is an established player in the smartphone market. They should probably start acting like it.

Like they did in the I'm a Mac campaign?

I know people keep bringing that up but to me they just seem like two very different campaigns. As someone who's been the owner of the product being poked fun at for each series, the 'I'm A Mac' commercials made me laugh and sort of shake my head because they were funny, wry and pointed out flaws in the product I was using.

These commercials point out flaws in the product that I'm using, but they also are petty and even a bit catty against the users of the product as well (not this commercial, but others). That's why I don't like them. The 'I'm A Mac' commercials made me want a Mac, these commercials make me roll my eyes, particularly since Samsung has a poor reputation amongst die hard Android fans themselves.

That said, this commercial has a point and I hope Apple steps it up for the 6S. I don't want Apple to get wrapped up in being the dominant player and become complacent on innovation, and it's easy to do that with a production-line king in charge, imo. Tim Cook has done a good job but I hope with the Apple Watch fully launched in 2015 he pushes forward on the iPhone again.

I dislike when a company has to resort to making others look bad to sell product.... I'd rather they emphasize their own strengths than others weaknesses

Great point

I was more shocked that the Amazon Fire phone only sold 35k units since July... now that is shocking. Apple on to selling millions of phones over the weekend, eh.. I'm used to that.

The Amazon Fire phone is an insult to humanity. "Look, I see something, I need to buy it with one click NOW. Gimme!" Only losers live like that. And rich people's ultra-spoiled teenaged kids, of course; but that segment prefers the cool phone.

More direct ad, impossible

LOOOL, Samsung is really mad, this ad was like "do not buy the new iphone, please!!! "

Samsung has introduced a new ad for its upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4, talking about how the company first introduced the Galaxy Note series in 2011 and popularized the "phablet" form factor while calling out Apple for making the similarly sized iPhone 6 Plus three years later.

YouTube: video
The ad begins recounting the history of the Galaxy Note before talking about some of the features of the device, like multi-window multitasking and its S-Pen stylus. The ad then shows articles from online publications criticizing Samsung for releasing the original Galaxy Note due to the device's large size before showing articles praising Apple for releasing the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

Finally, the ad shows select tweets from users criticizing Apple for releasing the iPhone 6 Plus three years after Samsung started the Galaxy Note line of devices. The commercial ends with the release date for the new device.

Samsung has continually created advertising going after Apple, its products and its fan base, famously depicting people ogling the Samsung Galaxy S2 while waiting in line outside an Apple Store for the newest iPhone mode. More recently, Samsung published a series of web ads poking fun at Apple's September 9 special events and rolled out a "Wall Huggers" ad campaign that pokes fun at the iPhone's battery life.

Apple had another blockbuster release cycle with both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. This time they were able to snatch away some Android users due to the larger form factor of their premium offering; I wonder how many of these Android users are Galaxy users specifically. Would be an interesting poll!

Why does MacRumors post these stories? They're just giving them free advertising at this point. I understand the stories about the actual products of Apple's competition, but why post the attack ads? What kind of good discussion is going to come from this article? Who seriously thinks that this article is a valuable contribution to this site?

Because it will probably be a 10+ page thread with 10K, maybe 20K views. Maybe more. Lots of clicks for MR.

I love how people keep saying Samsung will die or Apple will die, blah blah blah. Samsung makes sooooo much more than phones its not even funny. They certainly will not die. And Apple will live on as well as they always have. Their software is amazingly simple and robust and their hardware is excellent quality.

I think it was smart of Samsung to do this. Apple has a huge press release each year with a ridiculous amount of media attention to let everyone in the world know when they have a new device coming out. Samsung announced their phone at IFA, which a lot of people do not know about or follow. So why not capitalize off of Apple's media attention and draw people's attention to you having a new device coming out too that is in its 4th generation of refinement. Smart really, wether you agree with it or not.

It is just great competition. And the competition will live on. I like Samsung devices and Apple devices. Why can't the users just decide what works best for them and let that be it. I will be checking out the Samsung Note 4 when it hits and seeing if I like it more than my Note 3. I will also be checking out the iPhone 6 + once it is available and seeing if that will win me back to an Apple device.

Huh I wonder who started the whole thing? Yep we all know. APPLE!

Let this be the thread where people swear they never wanted a large screened phone until Apple did it. I'm not saying the iPhone 6 plus is a bad thing, but honestly it's nothing new really. I guess it's good if you just really love iOS and have always secretly wanted a larger iPhone.

What the Android alliance doesn't realize is, it is never about the specs.

I could walk around with an Alienware PC, but it doesn't make a great phone. Likewise, I can have a 3GHz/4GB RAM Android phone, 5000 x 3000 pixel display (I'm reaching here, but go with me) that is a horrible product. But what the product does and how it works counts the most. I've tried Android and iOS, and I can say without a doubt iOS is for me. You couldn't pay me to use a phone withe better hardware than the iPhone, but give up iOS. Just wouldn't happen.

Um, a product announcement at a keynote is not paid advertising during primetime sporting events. SMH

You are obviously correct. But Apple announcing the product months before it's release is intended to create interest and hype, so IMO, it serves a similar purpose, although it's not bashing a competitors product.

Some of you may be dissing Samsung on this ad but they do have a point, they brought the term Phablet to the market & made extra large smartphones popular, otherwise why would apple make a 5.5" iPhone.

Also the Note series have tons more features to make use of the extra screen real estate & the S pen can be really useful, where as the iPhone 6 Plus is nothing more really than a bigger iPhone 6, it does nothing "apart from rotating screen" to differ itself from it's smaller sibling.

But this mainly down to the limitations of iOS 8, maybe in iOS 9 onwards we start to see features that makes use of the extra screen size on the Plus series.

When you're the gold standard, you don't mention your competitor. Hence, why Apple rarely, if ever, mentions Samsung.

Exactly - when was the last time McDonalds had a commercial ragging on Burger King? There's been countless ad campaigns from Burger King suggesting the Whopper is better than the Big Mac. Never the other way around. Same principle applies here.

Sort of like the "I'm a Mac" ads? Regardless Samsung is actually right here. Like it or not, Samsung has had big screen phones since day 1 while everyone laughed at them. I'm not saying I'm not happy that Apple finally has a huge phone, but it's funny that now everyone that used to hate phablets will now soon own one.

I used to hate the idea of a phablet. Heck, I might even hate my iPhone 6 Plus when I get it... One of the reasons I am getting the 5.5" screen size is because of the integration between hardware and software. I think it's all about the experience. People who like simplicity in software will stay with Apple and people who want complexity and "more things" will go with Android. I do agree with how it is funny how people will laugh at a phablet one day and once Apple releases one, they will buy it. Like I said, I think it's all about software preference.

Apple does not innovate anymore. But when they do something, they do it right. My friends laughed at me when I mentioned the iPhone 6 is getting NFC. But I guarentee I will use my phone to pay for stuff more before 2014 ends, then they have with Google wallet in the past 3 years.

I dunno. Seems to me that there's been some innovation recently. Just a couple of examples:

Touch ID - biometric identification that actually works, using a capacitive 2D array instead of requiring swiping across a strip sensor.

Pay - the first post-magstripe solution that provides the processor with absolutely no information about the purchased items, purchase amount, or purchaser identity, and provides no information about the purchaser identity to the merchant, thus finally offering the promise of fraud-resistant and convenient payment processing.

Mac Pro cooling solution

Handoff

Unless you are mistaking "innovation" as meaning you have to invent something that isn't even tangentially related to anything that came before (in which case there is very little innovation going on by anyone).
