Some of you may be dissing Samsung on this ad but they do have a point, they brought the term Phablet to the market & made extra large smartphones popular, otherwise why would apple make a 5.5" iPhone.

I don't think the guy that first sold legal sized paper was making very much of an innovation beyond the guy that sold letter sized paper. "bigger" isn't much of an innovation unless you do something to make bigger work better in an unexpected way.

You are obviously correct. But Apple announcing the product months before it's release is intended to create interest and hype, so IMO, it serves a similar purpose, although it's not bashing a competitors product.

I also suspect they would have waited if not for the fact that it was certainly going to leak soon, and they wanted to beat the leaks for once.

Really every phone manufacturer has Dell to thank for larger screens.

Unfortunately this is true. With a new Apple phone I now expect quality, but not anything new. Maybe a victim of there own success? Apple used to tear up the rule book with new products, but with a yearly release cycle it's just spec bumps and case tweaks.

While I agree, I think smartphones in general have plateaued. Apple can hopefully defeat this by making larger screen phones, while Samsung maybe with premium build quality. Either way, from both camps I don't see anything new coming out. However, what else can they do at this point? Either way I think Apple will have a hit on their hands. I'm curious though, to see an iPhone users review of a phablet. I know a 4S owner upgrading to a 6 plus. Going to be a change for a lot of people.

When Apple releases something it works, I used to be a Android user, when they would release phones they had such major flaws some of them were on the verge of being non functional. If you enjoy pulling your battery every few days because your memory is full then Samsung is right for you. If you like these cool features that are half assed at best Samsungs right for you. I know when I buy an Apple product it's gonna work correctly right out of the box and not have to wait for a software upgrade weeks later for my phone to be able to operate normally. Apple works towards simplicity I can't tell you how many people in they're 70's that have iPhones because they are so simple to operate, apple just truly has their **** together.

I wonder if Samsung ever thanked Apple for the fingerprint sensor.

Apple wasn't the first to the fingerprint sensor game, but they were the best. Just like bigger screens. Because it's not just the hardware, it's also the software. This is what Samsung hopes people don't realize before handing over their hard-earned cash.

Wow, Samsung is now the one dishing out the kool aid. They seem to depict themselves as the first one to roll out a phablet or big screen phone and Apple copied them. How come they never mention that the first phablet was really the Dell Streak and it took Samsung about 1.5 years later to bring out the Note or how Huwei makes a bigger screen than Samsung? Samsung's crown is getting tighter as it's head gets bigger.

I also suspect they would have waited if not for the fact that it was certainly going to leak soon, and they wanted to beat the leaks for once.

I think that they also did it early to see what kind of feedback they got. There is still time to do a bit of fine tuning. Plus it gets the fashion crowd talking about it, the tech sites, the watch sites, etc. It gives it plenty of time to sink in, and they can also use this info to plan their ad campaign.

It's telling that Samsung sells more phones yet still feels a need to compare themselves to Apple.

I wish there were a good way for Apple to neutralize these ads without giving Samsung the time of day. Something like "some people feel the need to always compare, we just focus on making the best". Or "Some people consider us their competition, our only competition is mediocrity".
They did subtly address this in the opening video of the keynote on Tuesday. Saying something to the effect of: "we release things when they're needed / ready / make sense ..."

I had one of the first phones with a fingerprint deal, what a joke my wife's fingerprint would unlock my phone.

It is a turn-off when a company can't say good things about itself and can only attack its competition. To be fair, I don't like it when Apple does it either. This add does not encourage me to buy the Samsung anymore than the misrepresenting adds from Microsoft encourage me to buy the Surface over an iPad or Mac.

If they're going to make lame ads, why don't they say something about the iPhone using a Samsung screen? Not sure if it even is, but I think it has before.

These attack ads scream of immaturity and remind me of political attack ads. I thought people finally realized those don't work.

I just hope apple doesn't feel the need to retaliate and start up commercials that bash Samsung. I feel as an apple user that the higher road apple as taken recently only shows the strength of the company and not the weaknesses.

Samsung's just jealous nobody cares about their new phone.

Apple does not innovate anymore. But when they do something, they do it right.

I think you just contradicted yourself.

Innovation does not equal Invention. People seem to forget this all the time these days. Innovation is not always about something brand new, it's more often about something better, and that's where Apple excels.

I bet you own a Segway or TriRod since you can't, by that rationale, own an automobile, which in its 128-year life has basically only gotten spec increases and case tweaks as well. It's very telling that few level the same charges at Mercedes-Benz or any other luxury manufacturer for essentially releasing the same technology year after year. Where are our flying cars or personal aircraft?

The fact is that Apple did, in fact, completely revolutionise the mobile telecommunication paradigm. It made a product that took what had always been a lackluster, hard-to-use product, and change it into something so ubiquitous that it's a way of life, an accoutrement for providing instant, mobile communication, information and productivity. That sort of achievement is a grand one, and not one that can be reproduced every, or every five, or every twenty. It's the sort of paradigm shift that happens once a generation, and it's very unfair to expect it every time September rolls round.

It's hard for me to feel irritated or disgusted with this ad since Apple themselves ditched their own "perfect size" 4". "Common sense" down the toilet.

This won't happen. Apple are above that.
Whereas the PC vs Mac poked fun, this Samsung c**p is tired and old. Making ads out of pointing out the competition is so 2000's.

Being an iPhone 3-3gs-4 to Note 2-3 to iPhone 6 Plus guy, I have no illusions that Apple here IS following Samsung with the phablet. Deny it all you want, but it was the Samsung that created the 5.5"+ market.

I was one of those crazy Apple customers that actually didn't want to be told what was good for me, and I wanted a phone large enough to serve as a small tablet. Took Apple few years and they FINALLY listened. Good to be back, but I know who to thank for my 6 Plus.

That aside, Samsung commercials are usually crap these days, and this one is no exception. Please do not compare it to the Mac vs PC series, not in the same ballpark. Those were some of my favorite tech commercials at the time and still are to this day.

Apple does not innovate anymore. But when they do something, they do it right. My friends laughed at me when I mentioned the iPhone 6 is getting NFC. But I guarentee I will use my phone to pay for stuff more before 2014 ends, then they have with Google wallet in the past 3 years.

Very true, Apple's more thorough implementation of mobile pay is good for Google, Android and other phone makers with NFC. They are excited with Apple Pay hitting the market. Apple with Apple Pay will change the paradigm of how retailers support mobile payments. Google wallet will benefit from retailers upgrading their POS equipment to support Apple pay.

I don't know what the big deal is. A friend of mine got himself the first Note when it came out. He loved but I thought it's just a phablet and not a nice one at that. Recently I went to look at a 5.5in Note just to get a feel of what iPhone is going to feel like. Still hated it and ordered the 4.7in iPhone.

Yip they could have made a 4" iPhone 6 only and it would have still sold millions because it what Apple users are use to.

I mean i'm glad in a way Apple has moved away from the 4" screen, I don't plan on buying the 6 as i'm totally happy with my 5S for another year until the 6S comes along.
