Which is funny because computers could only handle decent quality video starting 10 or 15 years ago, and good quality video since about half that time.

That is not true, at all already in 1980's computers were use for editing and cg. And that is Film 4k+ quality. Computers nowadays are very much more capable than those computers.

If Mac OS supports a hardware specification, isn't better replace old components to new one instead of buy a new Mac Pro?

In this case, the custom Mac Pro Motherboard is platform specific and stuck with some older tech specs. That's the biggest problem. However, the best upgrade anyone can do to any computer other than adding sufficient memory is pop in an ssd drive.

you are right desktops wont be replaced until other solutions are better. (

Actually, at least as far as Apple is concerned, desktops will be replaced when Apple says so, like it or not unfortunately. Of course what they say and reality may be at odds.

Chatting to a guy at my local Apple Store who cheerfully admitted to knowing nothing about release dates ("Man, I bet you know more than me, I don't have time to read all those rumour sites..."). Anyway, he says he and his colleagues are guessing an announcement in Q4. His thinking is that the best (only?) time to release new iMacs this year is just in time for what the Americans call "the holiday season", especially given all the other new products being released this year (new MBPs/Airs, new iPhone, etc).

i'm quite sure that the best release date for the new imacs would be q3.
we had the ipad in q1, the airs and pros in q2 and there'll be the iphone in q4, so i'm still hopeing for the new imacs together with ML now in july...

I can happily say that I see the iMacs dwindling here in Norway. Though I know Norway is a small country and probably not a good indicator worldwide, the fact that all the biggest retailers are emptying out is a good indiction that the current iMacs are going out of production. How long Apple want to keep them in small amounts and on their own website I dont know. But, Elkjøp, which is Norways largest hardware chain, with hundreds of stores and also a authorized reseller (with dont have official apple stores) are only having a few left in 2-3 stores of 2 of the models....a week ago it was pages of stores having all models. so they are obviously getting rid of them. Also, komplett.no, Scandinavias largest webshop are completely out. Last weeks they stated a date for re-stock...now they simply say out of stock, can be ordered. ..so they are clearly not ordering in any more models unless someone wants to make an order themselves...which indicates they know more than us. I hope this means something. End of month maybe.

After reading a few of the "out of stock" or low inventory post.....Has anyone considered that retailers are simply not ordering a lot of stock based on various speculation that the new iMacs are coming?

It doesn't mean they are....it just means the retailers don't want to be stuck with outdated inventory. (Maybe they can send it back to apple, but.....). I don't think various retailers inventory levels means anything about a possible release of new iMacs.

Good point, but would retailers want to miss out on many potential sales by not having stock of something simply because of what they have read on the internet/speculation? - I imagine that Apple's own stores will get priority on remaining stock over resellers therefore Apple will be the last to 'run out'

I like this guessing game, its fun lol :D

according to the The Wisdom of Crowds theory
we can expect the new imac in july :)

The Mini looks as if it will be perfectly updated (if July) for it's average cycle, how nice... now - let's just hope the iMac tags along!

24th with ML for me. Or if they follow last years model before the update with a free update for people that purchased this month. But as ML will be by ESD only there is no reason to separate the 2 as there will be no issues in store.

With news that Apple will release its quarterly results on July 24, there goes the front runner in the poll of more than 300 voters so far...July 31 is during the Olympics, so have to say July 17 looks the most likely date now...

Last year Peter told investors that Lion would be released the following day of the earning call. We could see a similar scenario on the 25th.

Now Digitimes piping up saying October refresh with retina. If it wasn't that old pile of BS at Digitimes, I'd be getting concerned but it has been picked up by some legit media outlets who are running with the story
