two generation old chip - still faster than everyone else though and does what it is supposed to do, so do you really need a Geekbench score of 7700 to watch tv and movies?
Considering Apple TV probably won’t see another upgrade in 3-4 years, we need all the speed we can. Especially with newer Arcade games and all.

By next upgrade, that A12 chip will be 6 generations old.

I'm sure many will make excuses for Apple, but there is none here.

This is sloppy and not acceptable.

You design and release a new remote - a device that is frequently "lost" around the house - and don't absolutely include it in the U1 "locate me" plans?

I'm sorry - just terrible on Apple's part.
This is a huge drop the ball moment

Anyone who asks why they need to track a remote clearly:

- Doesn’t have children
- Doesn’t sit on a couch

Last summer our TV remote was missing for four days - my young son often walks to his room and back to the living room with it. In this case it somehow ended up in his laundry basket!

The newly redesigned Siri Remote, which will be sold alongside the updated Apple TV 4K and is also available on a standalone basis, does not have a built-in U1 chip and does not appear to be compatible with the Find My app.

There is no U1 ultra wideband chip listed in the specs for the Siri Remote, nor is there a mention of the Find My app, and now Apple has confirmed to The Verge that it's not an oversight -- the remote does not have a U1 chip.

Ahead of the launch of the new 4K Apple TV there were rumors that the Siri Remote would have a Find My-like feature for locating it when it's lost inside the house, but that feature does not appear to have been implemented. If Find My were available for the remote in some capacity, Apple undoubtedly would have mentioned it as a feature.

Apple is perhaps expecting Apple TV users to add an AirTag to the back of the Siri Remote, which would allow it to be tracked via the Find My app.

It also appears that the 2021 iPad Pro models are lacking a U1 chip as well, though the new Apple TV does indeed have U1 support. U1 devices now include the iPhone 11 models, iPhone 12 models, new Apple TV 4K, and HomePod mini.

While no Find My capabilities are available for the second-generation Siri Remote, it does feature a revamped design with a touch-enabled clickpad.

Apple must have forgotten to add the chip. Looks like an honest mistake.

Every time I couldn’t find my remote, I happily used my iPhone. Having it trackable this way seems like a waste of resources. Why drive up the cost with FCC and frequency testing? Why add complexity to a very basic and rarely lost piece of equipment? Do you really need AR to help you know to look in the couch?
Yeah. I do

Swing and a miss, Apple.

Such a sad failure for a $60 remote and a $200 set-top box combo'd with the remote -- especially since you only update it every few years.

Somehow you can put a U1 chip in a $29 AirTag AND in the Apple TV box itself (which nobody would ever lose), but you cannot manage to put a U1 chip in the Siri Remote or even the new iPads.

Whoever is coming up with the strategy for deploying the U1 chip in Apple products is an idiot.

Why not? My Dish Network remote had a feature 10 years ago allowing me to press a button on the set-top box and have it page the remote so I could find it in the couch cushions.

Adding "Find My" to the remote would have been absolutely brilliant instead Apple gets a swing and a miss. If they can put a U1 chip in a $29 AirTag that runs on a watch battery then how can they not put one in the Siri Remote or even the new iPad Pros -- it makes no sense -- it borders on idiotic.

The number one thing we lose on a daily basis is the Siri Remote -- every morning we have to search for the thing because my teenage daughters have misplaced it or my 4-year-old son has hidden it. The thing falls between the couch cushions so easily, its ridiculous.

Also, when "happily using your iPhone" have you ever noticed that you CANNOT control the volume on your TV. Not too happy if the volume is down way low or really loud.

You sound like a total apologist trying to justify the absence of the #1 requested feature in the new Apple TV remote.

Watching the airtags video where the guy climbs into the couch, reminds me that I have to find my apple TV remote just like this almost daily. This is a massive fail in my view not having UWB chip in the new remote.

Cordless phones too! I completely forgot about the "Page" button so you could find the (lost) handset.

That was a HUGE feature back in the day... gosh I'm old. :)

It doesn’t need U1, it needs a way to ping, like you can ping your phone from your watch. Apple made a very funny video about things getting lost in the couch, with a very funny cameo of an iPod Nano, and then doesn’t have a solution for the one thing that gets lost in the couch most often? Someone should be banging their head against the wall right now.

It's either between the cushions or under the couch. Takes less than 30 seconds to find.
In a survey some years ago, 4% of Americans replied that they usually find their remote in the fridge (while not being American, I have done that once...).

Keep in mind that there are some people in the world that are not you.

Something that seems to have been missed by people is that the new Apple TV itself DOES have a U1 chip - this could mean that spatial audio might be coming to the new Apple TV. The U1 chip would give airpods a location to pin the source to. The reason it hasn’t been implemented at launch could be because Apple are still figuring out how to make it work for people who don’t position their Apple TV boxes directly under their tv screens.

Condescension is unbecoming.

Huh? Perhaps this is missed because no where is this mentioned, not even in the tech specs. So why would you think that to be the case?

Did you read the post on macrumors or just the headline? It says there is a U1 chip in the Apple TV itself.

Just follow the trail of blood from those razor sharp edges. And lol at £55 for a remote.

In all seriousness this makes about as much sense as the new iMacs not having Face ID.

I think the idea here is that the Airtags are a little more serious than for things you are likely to only ever to lose within the same room. The overall scale of the Find My network is large and something Apple likely worked on a lot, and so instead of reducing it to a remote-finding gimmick Apple might be redirecting attention to its larger purpose and application.
Did you miss the part where Apple had a guy climbing inside his couch only to find his lost keys? Then they went on to sell keychain holders for AirTags. It’s a key finding gimmick.

But is this confirmed anywhere? Apple certainly makes no mention of it.

It's certainly not mentioned in the article this is based off:
