This is going to be an awesome new era for Apple fans. Even the “too thick” haters will get their M2 Air next year, nicely differentiating the lineup.

The glory days are back.

Apple carefully and intentionally forced the very few Pros who actually use HDMI to purchase dongles. Now they’ve put it back instead of an additional TB port and because the damn HDMI port is so large, they made this device thicker…
Yup. And those of us who never use HDMI now have a useless port back. Yay??! I use DP daily and welcome DP 2.0 on the TB4 ports. I only use HDMI for TVs which use it over DP due to patent royalties more than anything.

your assumption is 'few'

they have the metrics you don't.

This is unacceptable. LOOK AT HOW THICK AND CLUNKY THIS BACKWARDIZED DEVICE IS?

Yes, this is utterly unacceptable! Beyond reproach! Shame on Apple for doing this! I can't believe this...

Let's look at the specs and see just how much thicker these idiots have made these new notebooks!

WHOOOOPS!!!!

They are actually 0.01 cm THINNER!

What this sensational poster is doing in the photo is probably picking on the 16" and comparing that with the old 13". It is going to be thicker.

People citing the specs showing that they aren't technically THAT much thicker are being disingenuous.. the round design of these make them thicker all the way around and they also look bulbous and outdated.

That sort of judgement can not be made until one is actually in your hands. They are technically not much thicker and that is ALL we have to go on right now. Mountain over a freaking molehill.

It makes no sense to compare the MAX thickness of the new Macbook Pro, since the max thickness number on the previous one only applied to the middle center bottom of the notebook, which you never see.

If you look at the notebook on a table while using or while carrying it around it's actually almost double the thickness.

What people actually see when looking at the device is how they will judge it.. in the stores and anywhere else.

I love that they put some ports back in and have no problem with making it thicker, but I think they should have kept the tapered edges.

Can someone link a laptop with comparable specs, that’s in a thinner body, at around the same price. If there’s more than 5 options I’ll understanding the complaints about its size.
They can’t because they do not exist (at least widely produced laptops). Check out the ThinkPad P15 dimensions: 1.24 x 14.7 x 9.9 inches and weighs 6.32 pounds.

The Dell XPS 15 is thicker too: 0.71 x 13.6 x 9.1 inches. It weighs 4.3 pounds.

ThinkPad X1 Extreme: 0.7 by 14.1 by 10 inches and 4 pounds.

MacBook Pro: 0.66 x 14.01 x 9.77 inches

Weight (M1 Pro): 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)

Weight (M1 Max): 4.8 pounds (2.2 kg)

It’s heavier than some but will have better performance, solid build quality (the ThinkPads are generally great and the XPS is fine), and more. It will run cooler and quieter (I’ve used the Dell XPS extensively and have read the X1 reviews).

Apple Silicon is the most "Steve Jobs" innovation since Tim took over:

-not buying Beats
-not the Apple Watch

Steve hated relying on the chip companies and their lazy shipping schedules and production problems and thermal requirements. For Tim to ditch Windows compatibility and tell the developers to re-write all the software (For the third time in 20 years) is remarkable. As a mac user, the apple silicon stuff excites me.

Yes, how terrific that instead of having to wait on Intel's seemingly once-a-year chip upgrade delays for Macs, we can now wait on Apple to roll out new chips about once a year, sometimes opting to re-use a chip rolled out 6 months or so ago in new Mac releases. Clearly once a year is far better than once a year. Intel is lazy. Apple is genius.

Bonus: how terrific that the Intel premium that Apple used to have to pay for those chips and thus charge us consumers more to cover it is getting dumped now that Apple is going with their own chips. I'll so appreciate the product cost savings "passed on to us consumers." ? Now where's the Apple card financing option to buy these new cheaper Macs? ;)

Bonus: for us working Mac crowd, it's so great to jettison Bootcamp/Windows-in-one-laptop capability. Now when we have to work with clients that need us to be able to run Windows, we can carry along TWO computers instead of one... and/or only take the Windows computer we know we will NEED instead of the Mac that we wish was there for some tasks too. That's much better than the great utility of being able to use one box to cover BOTH bases.

But that aside, Apple silicon is definitely exciting. If one doesn't care about once-a-year upgrades, shifting the Intel premium to Apple's bottom line instead of doing anything about pricing, not needing Bootcamp/Windows and not caring that many software re-writes are taking a long time instead of the "just flip one switch in the compiler" concept, it's dazzling computing power in energy-efficient chips.

In spite of the above, I actually am very enthusiastic about Apple silicon. I just don't see it as all rosy. For me, that "one computer for both worlds" loss is a major impact. I don't want to carry 2 computers out on the road, so these new SuperMacs will likely be left behind for work road trips where I know I'll have to have native Windows capabilities. I detest that idea... but not enough to carry 2 laptops when NEED overrides WANT.

To the trolls about too thick… she has never complained and that only means one thing about you….. ?

A lot of people showing their buyers remorse for their 2019 and 2020 purchases and envy in this thread lol. If you can’t afford it, it’s ok. The cheap mba is for you!
A lot of people are also showing that they will whine and complain about something no matter what Apple does.

Apparently Apple should have several millions SKUs, each one tailored specifically to an individual’s exacting tastes, or they have failed and are horrible and the world is going to spin off its axis.

Wow. The new MBP looks really dated next to the old MBP. It also no longer fits with the rest of the product design language. I guess without Jony Ive, the next best thing is to recylce his 20 yr old design.

If thinness is your top priority, Apple got other mobile computers to sell you.
