What's even more surprising is for the first time in ... forever(?) Apple are actually showing the rubber feet in product shots.
That's because the feet are WAAYYY higher than ever before, to improve airflow/cooling (I guess).

Wasn't that supposed to be less of a problem with Apple chips?

Couldn't get it done in time?

No patience and time to read all the mumble rumble. Mostly are just inconsequential stuff anyways.

I do have 13” MacBook Pro, but I’m thinking about going for 16” as my eye sight can’t reliably view contents on a 13” screen when zoomed out. Sure, bigger, heavier, but I don’t need to get M1 Max with 64 GB of RAM and 8TB storage, so it would be nicer for me. Can’t wait to see it in action in an apple store later on.

I'm eagerly waiting for my 14" to ship, but damn if those aren't way uglier than the 2016 models.

I don't mind, of course, since I'd much rather have a functional machine than a pretty one, but anyone looking at these machines would have to admit that the 2016-2020 ones looked a lot better.

Apple chips and better cooling provides options to adjust between performance, noise and heat.

So they’ve reintroduced the I/O ports of yesteryear after a raft of complaints. About time.

And introduced the new in-house chipset architecture that is supposed to provide both superlative processing power (check) with significant energy efficiency (check). Right?

So why does the form factor and design details looks like something from the early 2000s? My pristine TiBook still looks sexier than this chunky monstrosity.

Wow, these MacBooks certainly have not been put on a diet. They've piled on some considerable weight & fatness since the last generation! Weren't the M1 series of chips supposed to enable smaller and lighter designs? Or at least, better battery life and thermals within the existing ones?
That’s what the base M1 is for. For a while some users have been saying they’d prefer Apple to prioritize cooling, performance and battery over size and weight on the high end laptops, and that’s exactly what we’ve gotten with these. They could have tried to get the same performance of the old Pros from something the thickness of an iPad, but instead they decided to blow intel out of the water.

There’s maybe room in the lineup for a thin and light pro laptop, like the current 2 port one, with stuff like ProMotion and more display outputs but does go thinner and lighter. Hopefully we’ll see something like that when the Air gets revised, if they don’t drop the low end “pro” entirely

Looks VERY thick, overall design looks like its against apple’s design philosophy (aesthetically pleasing) in every way. We are all pleased with their spec, but I am very disappointed with the design. Which upsets me because I feel like apple had the ability to accomplish both. But hey, they really did manage to pack alot inside.

Oof. I love the chunky look of this computer, knowing it is just the same as the previous ones, for all practical purposes. The MagSafe return along with SDXC is all I could ask for, and HDMI is a bonus.

When I got my 2011 MBP 15, Apple just released the retina displays in 2012 with the HDMI ports and everything. I told myself I would love to have that. Now, a decade later, I can do that. After 2016, Apple finally makes these computers with useful ports again. I never minded USB-C. I love it. But I did mind that there was no SDXC, no MagSafe, no HDMI. I had to buy a separate card reader for my DSLR cards. Now, the computers are perfect once again - when I am out, I do not want to carry a card reader, I want one in the chassis.

MagSafe should never have been removed. It is a bummer, though, that HDMI standard is not the latest and the greatest but 2.0.

Edit: Hmmm - looking at the specs this is almost the same thickness as the previous models. It really just is the shape of the bevels. The previous ones have a much more tapered design so that from the side it feels thinner. So I retreat whatever I said before ?

It's a 20-year anniversary throwback design to the Titanium Powerbook G4 from 2001, which was the first in the modern Powerbook/Macbook Pro series.

It looks dated because ... it is.

Apple:
“I heard all your complaints. Therefore we designed the following improvements/upgrades over the previous 16” model:

1. Improved Audio/Video experience
2. Better Camera
3. More port options w/ TB4 and Magsafe!
4. Fast Charging
5. 120 Hz display w/ProMotion
6. The most powerful ARM SoC chips ever designed and used in a laptop computer that you’ll absolutely struggle to get the fans to kick on with. We’re talking almost desktop quality GPU performance. Stream 7 feeds of 8K video. Dedicated ProRes encode/decode engines, 400 GB/s memory bandwidth, 64 GB unified memory….and much, much more…

However, we need to increase the thickness by 0.02 inches!”

Apple hater:
“It’s just too thick and the notch is so ugly, I’m cancelling my order!”
Take a look at the Dell XPS. They got it right and didn’t use a notch for the camera. One has to wonder why Apple didn’t choose to go that route and have clean bezels all around.

I am still on the fence whether i want the 14" or the 16". I thought the 14" would be perfect since i'll work with an external 32" monitor most of the time anyway. But given how incredible these new displays are, i might want more of it.
$200 for 2 more inches and better cooling was a no brainer for me.

Despite adding back all those ports, still not a single USB-A port. Don't chuck your dongles quite yet!

This is for professional work, it cannot be thin, or else it will throttle like the last Macbook Pro 15 inch did.

I guess the next Macbook Air will be for you.

And it's awesome they are finally drawing a clear distinction, instead of constantly pushing to make professional laptops smaller at the expense of performance.

To every complaining about the size: the 16" should be a larger laptop. It's meant to be Apple's most powerful mobile workstation for those who need that mobile power. It should only be as thin that still allows for maximum performance of an M1 Max in their high power mode.

Hard to make a comparison with pictures but with my 2015 MacBook Pro the magsafe is barely fitting in the case. This looks pretty clunky compared to it

Apple could not go any thinner, so they decided to go thick, ugly and clunky, in favor of “Pro” users. For years, “Pro“ users have complained and Apple is now using them as the scapegoat for what is clearly multiple steps back in design and arguably function. We will have to wait 5-10 years for a slimmer and more elegant chassis design. Can’t believe they added in an outdated SD Card and HDMI ports. The M2 MBP will be thinner, beautiful and have much better battery life.
