Apple is certainly a market leader, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to follow them off the cliff. Sony introduced so much proprietary nonsense after the success of the Walkman, and look where they ended up.

I firmly believe that if Apple eliminates the 3.5mm headphone jack, there will be a noticeable drop in iPhone sales/estimates. Apple is eliminating one of the most universally used ports without offering a compelling alternative. Why would anyone want to pay a premium for that?

Oh yeah I don't disagree with that. It'd be like Apple dropping USB from their Mac lineup for something proprietary.

I have no desire to switch right now. I just ordered Bose headphones on Prime Day via Amazon so I'm all in for the 3.5mm for now.

I do agree with you. though I'm not sure if the relationship between the consumer and apple is where it was a few years ago, let's see how the same design does 3 years in a row
I don't think the relationship is the same considering the 6S saw a drastic sales decline compared to the 6. People can and have said say no to Apple.

Goes to amazon to buy some Bluetooth headphones...

15 new
7 used.

Free delivery next day with Amazon Prime.

I don't know how well the in ear kind shield from outside noises, since I can't use them.

But, I am pretty sure the bluetooth earphone development and refinements will get a boost from this and of course SAMSUNG will make 200 drawings to copy it.

In 2 years we'll all use bluetooth and never look back.

Plus, I don't consider the iPhone a device for audiophiles.

Just give me stereo sound instead of the mono rubbish.
[doublepost=1468536530][/doublepost]Apples so green.... It just made everyone buy new headphones.

The only thing that can save this phone for me would be wireless charging, since I often charge my phone and have the headphones in at work.
Highly unlikely given they're still going with an all-metal case, but it would be a nice bone to throw to their customers given this 'update'.

I'm sure Bose is delighted to hear they have another customer to double dip on . All earphone makers will be happy to hear that so many will need to buy new earhones to be able to take advantage of the new capabilities in the new connections . Don't hitch your wagon to simpleton ideals, hitch them to common sense.

That camera bump is bigger than the anticipation for this phone, pass. #bringonthe2017iphone

But not bigger than that fingernail...
[doublepost=1468539007][/doublepost]So now Apple is moving to a brand new design every 3 years? This iPhone 7 is just a 6b.

I think these will probably be very nice iPhones but I think I'll try the Note 7 and see what the competition has to offer. I will still have the SE keeping me in iOS. But I want to kind of wean myself from exclusive and blind dependence on Apple and iOS just in case the highly anticipated 2017 iPhone turns out to be a disappointment. Or in case Apple never brings out an upgrade to the SE when mine slows down or dies. That's the size I really want for my daily driver. But I have a niche use for a phablet with an excellent camera, too. So I remain eager to see what IPhone 7 will offer with the new cameras.

At this stage, with this many supporting rumors there can be little doubt that this is happening.

I look forward to the announcement and the obligatory "Whoops & Cheers" from the crowd that always seem to follow. Maybe, just maybe, there will be an uncomfortable silence.

I may be in the minority, but I for one hope there is as I really do not want to have to start having to use an adaptor, nor have any intention of replacing my current headphones that work with a very convenient, up until now, almost universally adopted connector type.

It's time to retire the 3.5mm jack. People have to let it go. Im sure you were also included in the group that was pissed when Apple changed 30pin connection to lightning. lol

Seriously, some of these people who obsess over the camera bump should get their heads checked.
The camera bump on my 6s Plus is something I don't even notice. It's very prominent in pictures, but in real life it's hardly noticeable to me and doesn't figure into whether I like my phone or not.

Removing the headphone jack won't be the end of the world to me either. I have one nice pair of headphones I use occasionally so I get far more use out of my earpods. The only downside is how I connect it to my car. My Accord is just old enough not to have Bluetooth so I use an aux cable. I've tried Bluetooth dongles before but the sound quality was just terrible.

I know not everyone is thrilled with the new iPhone debuting September. However, I really am excited to see what they will change and bring to the table. Usually there is one surprise that has not leaked or MacRumors has not gotten their hands on. It should be interesting.

There must be some amazing improvements to the internal components for Apple to be taking a risk like this. Then again, the company has underwhelmed over the past few years: iPad Pro, Retina MacBook, iPhone 6s.

I guess Apple has just matured and in a sense nothing is wrong with that. People will still buy the iPhone no matter what just because it is a premium brand.

People always claim to want substantial, technological change. But when the changes are internal, they're dismissed as unsubstantial. What they really mean is, they want a new exterior case.

Right, but at the end of the day, all phones are: 1) A thin rectangular device, 2) A screen occupying one side, 3) a couple buttons on either side.

So really ... how 'exciting' could any new design be? Furthermore, after about a month, it's new design is old news and it's just like using the phone you have now.

At this point in mobile phone evolution, getting excited about the design is so shallow and fleeting.

The problem is that Apple is replacing a standard (3.5 mm Jack) with a proprietary solution (lightning) if this was being replaced by say USB C I think people would be more inclined to believe that this was being done in the name of innovation. As it stands it stinks of Apple trying to rake in the licensing fees on Lightning accessories.

I think we can classify iPhone buyers into various groups:

1.upgraders (obviously on contract). They upgrade to newest model, no matter what. There are many upgraders this year. So it doesn't matter if iPhone 7 is made of glass or metal, they will get it.
2. Upgraders without contract (technology edge buyers). They prefer visual overhaul to show off latest model. I guess there will be black color models for them. They have money and just want something latest to brag.
3. Budget buyers. If iPhone 7 will have significant internal upgrade like A10, screaming fast GPU, larger base memory, better camera, they will think they have good deal. Design is not so important for them as they prefer value for money.
4. Casual buyers. They will buy latest or older models.
5. Android buyers. Ecosystem, speed, CPU and GPU and iOS 10 are main advantages for them.
6. Buyers of older models. They will be happy by buying 6S, which is itself a very nice model.

I have 6S Plus 128 GB, not filled even to half. Don't know to upgrade or not. I am interested in the lightning adaptor for headphones. I use iPhone as a main music player. So if Apple has created DAC in lightning adaptor for 3.5 mm headphones, I am going to use Lightning for audio with adaptor rather than 3.5 mm jack i have now because I wanna use newer DAC.

Nothing but whiners - if its not your cup of tea then politely bug out

I'll never get comments like this. It's a discussion forum, where people can express their opinions: good, bad, or crazy.

If you want a forum full of lobotomized, blankly smiling clones, then you're in the wrong place. You're the one that should go away.

Apple isn't complacent, they think consumers will consumer whatever they make, and they will. Wait and watch.

He says ... while Apple stock has stalled and their iphone and mac sales have been in decline.

look how far over outside the shell the glass sits. Don't know if this is actually assembled or he's just holding the glass in place but seems like a knockoff to me

Ah, 240P, it's been a long time...
