okay, i get it, new colors. but what about the specs
no quad-core chips
no bigger screen (and not even 720 HD)
no clue about a bigger battery
nothing about as better camera

i'm worried, if the iphone fails to impress me this time, i'm switching:(

So, here is a question. What would the iPhone need to have to be classed as new?

"Samsung" written on it. The same thing that people complain about they would call innovative from Samsung. Innovative new colour, innovative new CPU, innovative dual flash, innovative fingerprint scanner.

----------

I doubt if they'd be allowed to do so, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't want anyone using the name. Everyone is obsessed with IP and brand ownership, and they'd love to have exclusive usage of that word even if they don't know what they'd do with it. They certainly wouldn't want anyone else edging in on their brand, even if it doesn't directly affect them in any way.

Apple is very keen on IP.
My company used a company called "Apple Security" for security for several years. Absolutely true. Apple didn't care, and if they cared, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on with any complaint.

And just for fun, enter "michael kors watch champagne" into google.

I just switched from an iPhone 4 to an S4. I got sick of waiting for a worthwhile upgrade from Apple. It will take more than a 5" screen to get me back - it will take the following:

  • Real customization features
  • Widgets (see above)
  • SBSettings-like feature out of the box
  • SD slot
  • user-replaceable/upgradable battery (I loved the extreme light weight of my S4 but I just had to upgrade the battery - now I have a 7500mah battery and it is well worth the bulk; I can watch multiple movies and play games for a FULL day and still have a good amount of runtime left at the end of the day)
  • USB host mode (I love that I can plug in a keyboard and mouse and actually use it much like a PC)
  • Compatibility with standardized devices, such as MHL 2.0 interfaces
  • 1080p resolution
  • 2 GB RAM
  • "virtual" buttons in addition to home (like Android's Back and Menu buttons)
  • Better task management

Oh, and the ultra-high ppi display is amazing - I can read full-page PDFs because the characters can be fully drawn, not just be blurred approximations. Reference manuals, e-books, etc. all tiny fonts fully readable whereas on the iPhone I had to zoom to a column of text for it to render. I'm re-reading an RHCE study guide, puny yet fully readable text on this 4.99" 1080p screen. :)

  • Real customization features - Only needed because Android sucks
  • Widgets (see above) - Noise. You almost always have to drill into the real app. to get what you need (Calendar, Weather).
  • SBSettings-like feature out of the box - iOS7
  • SD slot - Would be nice but not worth the cost of dealing with Android
  • user-replaceable/upgradable battery ... - You watch movies on your phone! Wow.
  • USB host mode (I love that I can plug in a keyboard and mouse and actually use it much like a PC) - Ever heard of Bluetooth?
  • Compatibility with standardized devices, such as MHL 2.0 interfaces - ???
  • 1080p resolution - Ridiculous, also Pentile, also barely readable in daylight
  • 2 GB RAM - And yet it still lags. Badly.
  • "virtual" buttons in addition to home (like Android's Back and Menu buttons) - The back button is AWESOME. No disagreement there.
  • Better task management - Like constantly swiping apps closed and hitting the button on my third party RAM cleanup widget because ANDROID SUCKS?

Who is saying there are no chip upgrades, or battery & camera upgrades? Apple?

No, just a couple of folks who have their hands on what they say are the next Generation casings. In fact I noticed a while back that a leaked phone image appeared to have a larger battery and the guy in the video also alludes to this possibility.

Why not just relax and wait until the 10th? Worse case scenario, you can have fun with Android... :)

Interesting

Yep, you're right, my bad, Champagne colour is mega innovative, I hope we will see burgundy iPhone 6 with 2.5" screen next year... ;)

LOL

I was thinking actually that Ive has quite a lax job if you think about it. Use the Same old designs year after year, after year after year. Not a lot of tweaks, like perhaps maybe they would have crafted a couple tweaks to the laptops here and there, but all 3 lines look like the same type design.

Mac Pro (NEW) was different but years and years for that....

Dude is good at design, just saying he isn't really pushed. Colors I don't think needed much input from him.

Still will say they should have a 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 inch designs and that would pretty much cover it. Devs can deal with it. 4.5 would be the sweet spot for me.

it's interesting that there is so much attention about the color of the iPhone 5s only to have it covered with a case that is the perfect reflection of my personality and individualism.

My daughters have changed cases twice since May

TLD notes that the amount of space available for the logic board has been decreased to increase the available battery space

Bigger Battery! I wonder if that will be one of the features of the new iPhone... all day battery (or 8+hrs) XD

I think we've had enough of the back shells. Will the front of the phone looks the same as 5? I hope there is a least a little bit difference - maybe the home button.

Whatever the colors are, the screen size is still the same; I'll skip the 5S for myself for now, but will probably get a 5C for the kid.

God please no! That's only a step away from carrier branding, with carriers' logos printed on the case and the carriers' own awful bloatware apps built into the devices firmware. Have you ever used a carrier-branded smartphone?

Yeah i get your point but this would just be a limited edition model and iPhones never had any branding or bloatware.

IDK i think it might sell including the 2 basic colors there is a third to correspond to the carrier logo color, making it three colors on each carrier, but the two colors is not that bad if its all true

Only Apple can create 2 new (iffy) colors in a year old phone design and generate this much interest. I mean I was disappointed in the S4 but at least they increaed the screen size while keep the phone a similar size.

I am confused? A new processor design, fingerprint sensor, dual LEDs, different screen technology, and a seriously revamped OS. Those are some significant improvements to a an already great phone. Why does Apple need to change the body significantly? The iPhone 5 body is great.

Car companies release the same body for four to five years. The body style becomes a trademark.

Admit it. You've never used android.

Why are you worried about that. Apple should be worried not you unless you own stock of course lol.

i agree , the post sounds like a hater ...
android is pretty awesome ......
all the bashing should be for samsung and there garbage touchwiz

I'm very impressed with my S4, coming from an i5. But give us an iPhone with a 5 inch screen and I'll come back. I've invested more in iOS to date (still have an iPad to make use of the purchases), and while Android has improved greatly and I have no problems with it, nor the current app catalogue, I do still like iOS that little bit more. iOS7 looks very good too, would be fantastic on a bigger screen. My Fiancée has my i5 now and when I pick it up it feels uncomfortable and small. I call it a toy now. Still a good piece of kit though hardware wise, just needs to grow a liitle.

Which version of the S4? The one Samsung sells in the US is of lower quality in terms of processor performance then else place in the world. Further, everytime I pick up a Samsung phone I am amazed at how cheap they feel. The plastic back on the S4 is low quality plastic. Moreover, unlike the iPhone which feels like fine jewelry in terms of construction, the S4 does not have a high quality feel. The only thing that looks nice about the S4 is the larger screen. If I were to go Android, which I wouldn't (I'd go Windows phone first), I would have bought the HTC One which received great reviews in terms of construction. The S4 received luke warms reviews.

I also have too many bad memories of Samsung and Motorola phones before the iPhone to even think of buying a product from either of those companies ever again.

I'm not, switching that is, I'm just stuck in Apple Eco system so deep that it is (for me) impossible to go elsewhere...
Help me onbeone kenobi, yo're my only hope...

I have, and find it okay but a little convoluted. Depends on phone somewhat.

I simply call it "The OS that happens to be on that many devices"

Thing I dislike most about it is that we get Windows 2.0 all over again when they hit 90% eventually. Great for consumers when this happens all over again, one choice in OS on the majority of devices. I liked webOS far better but you know, HP.

Oddly enough, maybe MS can stop this from happening.

A faster processor happens every year as well as slight camera improvements (I'd prefer better low light quality than a dual LED flash). I have been using iOS7 since beta 1 and its more of a skin than anything else.

I will give you the fingerprint sensor, but again thats a solution to a problem that no one has yet. Hopefully it can/will be used for something more than password replacement.

To me significant hardware improvements would be:
Screen size choice
720p minimum screen resolution
Substantial camera improvements especially in low light environments
Better build quality (ie: Anostyle quality annodization, not cheap Apple quality where it flakes off under normal usage)
Home button improvements (possibly happening with the 5S)

iOS improvements:
Live tiles
Quick reply messaging
More gestures
True mulitasking on the iPad (1 program at a time on a 7-10" screen is a joke)

Why does everybody think there will be 4 colors maybe the 5S will only come in champagne and graphite :)

I completely agree with the build quality of the S4. It is an amazing phone, but I will not purchase a plastic phone in 2013.
