Tried this on my G5 (also on Tiger) and it works perfectly. The streaming quality is too low for me but I can adjust that in the scripts to have it stream 720p!
Glad you've found it useful :)
Yes, the scripting is very versatile - if you go to the youtube-dl site I linked to, you can see all the options available. I haven't figured why there's a huge time gap before streaming though - when you choose to download, that happens quickly by comparison.

@Dronecatcher,
First off the bat, let me say that you've done a damn good job here. Excellent thread!
I first attempted to install this a few months back, had reasonable success on a 15" alu Powebook running Leopard, but not so on another running Tiger. Too busy since to do much playing around with it, or watching videos.
That change today, as I've just spent several hours installing on my 1.33GHZ PBook - which I'm preparing to donate to a family member. (That person incidently purchased a new Bondi blue G3 iMac,1 in 1999. Didn't get on with OS 8.1, and sold it within the year to go back to a PC with Win XP, and said he was finished with Macs). I now wish to show him the error of his ways.....
Good news is, with the TonVid package & necessary extras installed iaw the Leopard instructions, first attempt was successful, and streamed in fairly low defintion with MPlayer opening by default. Then downloaded the same video, and playback options were QTPlayer (default). Selecting this opened up the video in full screen, but playback was almost unwatchable, so I assumed the video was HD. CorePlayer also showed up in the (Ctr click) playback options, and when selecting this, the video rendering was excellent in what I assume was 720p.
I then typed '1080P' into the YTube search item field, and from the many results, selected a short 2 min clip.
Streaming playback in MPlayer was very watchable in the small window which opened, but fairly low definition when making it full screen. Then downloaded same into 720P selector, and selected Coreplayer option for playback. Making the CPlayer full screen, rendered this video clip beautifully.
In summary, I'm amazed and more than satisfied with this downloader and it's high performance on a ppc G4 PowerBook.

I have one or two questions however, which I will add a little later.

Glad you've found use for it :)
It is a little clunky but it's really a launchpad for those who want to customise it to their own needs - thankfully youtube-dl has hundreds of command line options.
The main problem you'll come across is the ever changing Youtube - you might be hoping for a 360P mp4 that's no longer there, or if it is, it's soundtrack is separate.
The foolproof method and far more elegant and user friendly is SMTube courtesy of @Lastic - but alas, that's Leopard only but it is far quicker.
Mine is good if you want to watch Youtube on a 300Mhz iBook however ;)

I agree, the high end Powerbooks are more than capable of 720P playback - 1080P in some examples but I've found you can't rely on one player to fit all. Coreplayer is massively efficient but it can't handle all file types - it's good to keep MPlayer, VLC and XBMC around.

Just updated youtube-dl in Terminal (youtube-dl -U) with no apparent problems.
Now, with ref to Python that PPC Media Center should apparently install. Where normally would Python be located after the install? I installed Media Center v6.0 first, followed by v6.5 as instructed, but cannot see an obvious location for Python (whereas on the other G4 PowerBook I previously installed this dowloader procedure on, I see Python 2.7 is in the Apps folder). In the 1.33GHz G4 I've been using today it's not in the Apps folder, or elsewhere that I can see - although as stated this TonVid package is now working well on both PBooks under Leopard. Weird or what?
I've also just taken note of your post #26 in this thread, and the updated streaming script/app to only play mp4, flv or 3gp files. Presumably that's still recommended, so if you'll excuse a query which may be obvious to many, what is the exact procedure after unzipping that attached file?

You just replace the original YT with it - remember, that one is for streaming not downloading clips - I'd only recommend streaming for long videos, short clips are quicker downloaded. I'll get back to you about the Python folder location.

All I see is dev-CVS-051126-18:35-3.3 if that's any help?
It's not the latest PPC version - I found that one not so good on G4s.

I actually forgot that I installed it via Macports 2.3.4 (mplayer 1.3.0) and not from source.
This is actually the latest stable version of mplayer, I have build the mpkg using Macports.

mplayer 1.3.0 for OS X 10.5.8 compiled on G4 , @Dronecatcher feel free to try it and let me know wether it's worthwhile to post in a new thread.

Hello, it's high time for "PPC Youtube for dummies".....
So, how many different ways to watch Youtube on PPC are there at the moment, anyway..? All I know is my Youtube stopped working some time ago even though I had Clicktoplugin and some hack-Flash plugin too.
I have a G5 with Webkit, and a Foxbox for Youtube, but I can't use it fullscreen, etc.
According to some pieces of info I found I'd need a Tampermonkey/Ninjakit/Viewtube combo. I found all these at last. But I'm not sure where to put the Viewtube script - and when I clicked it started the old silver-rimmed Safari...
And now I found this thread here. Apparently I'd need a PPC Media Center first anyway. Seems like Youtube should work with that alone..?

All I'm looking for is some way to watch Youtube preferably on Webkit and with full screen. After those I might prefer easiness to best quality.

PS. And now I notice Dronecatcher mentioning SMTube, as a "foolproof method and far more elegant and user friendly" - and for Leopard only..? That does sound like something for me...

Good morning,

First off , let me inform you that Dronecatcher's method works on Tiger and G3's also whereas SMTube only works on
Leopard and is best coupled with Coreplayer (which benefits from Altivec on the G4 and G5's)

SMTube is a GUI app which lets you browse Tonvid.com, which is a HTML5 version of Youtube.
Basically you open SMTube , search for your video that you want to watch , click it and it will open in your Preferred player.

The best results are with Coreplayer on a G4 where you can go up to 720p to watch videos.

Here is my thread with the install details :

{19-SEP-2017} SMtube 17.5 (OS X 10.5.8 ) (alternative for Youview/Mactubes/Mobile Youtube) INSTALLER

To breakdown the install :

  1. install qt4-mac
  2. place SMTube.app in your Applications folder
  3. place Coreplayer in your Applications folder after having filled in one of the serial numbers
  4. Choose your preferred quality and make Coreplayer your default player
  5. Enjoy Tonvid (Youtube) :)
If you need any help, just give a shout on my thread.

Thanks a lot Lastic! Most often I get embedded Youtube on other sites so I guess I was hoping there was still some way I could just click and play within those sites but then maybe I'll get used to the extra step of searching.

Well, I'm able to play back Youtube videos using Leopard Webkit or Roccat linked against Webkit on my PB G4 12" 1.5 Ghz
, 360p is the limit but they do play (since they use HTML5).

Here is a good overview on your options :

[For New Users]The Starter Thread

You can find Roccat here :

You can download Leopard Webkit here :

Here is a good explanation on how to relink Roccat against Webkit by @eyoungren

!?! Well I have Leopard Webkit on a G5 and I have Clicktoplugin and the reason I'm here is because Youtube says "your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available".

Anyway, if Webkit/Clicktoplugin are still supposed to work with Youtube then I don't see what all the fuss about other methods is...

I did ask about Clicktoplugin elsewhere and I was told "the YouTube.js script is not compatible with YouTube anymore. The only solution is to remove the script." Now, I don't even know what that script was about. All I knew was that the idea of Clicktoplugin was to offer alternatives for using Flash and risky plugins. So I thought removing something is a risk.

Anyway, I did try to remove that script but didn't know how - it was always back there when I re-entered the settings. I didn't get further help with that.

So if everything's down to that script then all I need to know is how the heck to get rid of it..!

Clicktoplugin hasn't yet been updated to the latest Youtube changes, until it is it wont work.
NinjaKit/Viewtube does however - I just tried it and it's more efficient than CTP too.
The 'fuss' about the other methods is you don't have to use a standard web browser to navigate the Youtube site which brings G4s to a crawl, plus playing video won't peg your CPU as browser methods do.

I simply don't use any Plugins anymore.

This is Roccat 7.5 relinked against Leopard Webkit on the fastandeasyhacking.com Media page

Picture 3.png

As you can see Roccat won't play the Flash videos but will play the HTML5 videos like the Hak5 ep. 10.10x02.

I opened this one on my PB 12" G4 with Better Performance power-option Full screen on WiFi and 360p plays will no struggle.

Thanks for that Dronecatcher.
So, being the resident dummy here (a very non-computer person who years ago bought a used G5 and has just stubbornly stuck with it through all the changes), I'm not used to using scripts etc and don't know where to put the Viewtube script...
PS ... as a piece of javascript is the only Viewtube I found/downloaded...

On a G5 Roccat is the most hassle free solution - I still like to spare my portables from the javascript hell of Youtube though ;)

Agree, most of my time is spent on the G4 . if I just want to browse Youtube , I'll use SMTube.

If I want a more secure browser I mostly use TenFourFox , for speed , embedded Youtube, Udemy videos I'm using Roccat relinked against Leopard Webkit even on the G5.

@Lud DiLettante You're talking to the right person for script advice, I learned where to put mine when I still used them by reading @Dronecatcher 's posts :)

Once you've installed NinjaKit go to http://isebaro.com/viewtube/
click on the Viewtube icon at the top, a window will open then install the script - that's it.
