Unbelievably poor planning on O2's behalf. I've had a code sent, but then like others have said, a browser crash straight after entering the code, or it loads to a page for card details, plans etc, and no place for the code to be entered. Brilliant, just brilliant.

And now no 16GB? Not that I've got that far to see stock, but still. No chance even to order it and wait for it to get into stock?

I'm having to go from the start of the process for the nth time now...

has anyone tried the "failover" page.. and succeeded??

really dont know what to do!!
i go on holiday on friday, if i order on here, i have no idea if it will arrive on friday, or later when im gone!!
but if i go down on friday to o2 store, who knows whether we can actually get one or not!!!!

any advice???

I've tried it a bunch of times but just got back to the form again, so I'm assuming it's not being processed (some clever **** at O2 thinking IF SERVER LOAD > X THEN FORWARD TO THIS PAGE KTHX).

got so far then had that silly failover page. It was the same on iPhone launch, O2s systems couldnt match the demand. You would have thought they might have learnt their lesson.

yeah thats what i thought.. so no point doin it that way i guess..
more sitting round clickin the upgrade link every 15 seconds.. woop

I give up.

I've entered my credit card details a load of times, but it keeps sending me back to the first page again.

I bet O2 end up biling me multiple times now too!!

Nowhere to enter the upgrade code either (i guess thats after the CC bit).

BTW - what are people entering into the Insurance Requred/Bolt On fields?

'Yes' and either 'None' or just leaving blank. I'm mixing it up ;)

Carphone warehouse seem to have the 16gb in stock with free delivery by courier also on friday. Anybody know of any reason not to order from them and go with O2?

If you are a new iPhone customer, go with them. But if you already have an iPhone, I'm afraid you have to go through O2's déjà-vu style ordering process.

Anyone who isn't upgrading, but wanting to buy the iphone on a fresh contract may want to try the carphone warehouse website. I've just ordered my 16gb black version and they currently seem to have them in stock. No problem with the website eiter, process took about 2 minutes with 1password. They say it will be delivered on friday by courier :)

I dont get how O2 could get this so wrong. They know exactly how many iPhone customers they have, and how many people registered interest. A simple bit of maths should have told them to have a server with enough capacity to service all the customers that would be interested. Silly O2!

Just got an email from Carphone Warehouse.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for ordering with www.carphonewarehouse.com.

Unfortunately, the item you ordered is temporarily out of stock. We do make every effort to ensure that only items that are in stock appear on the website, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

What should you do next?

Don't worry! We are expecting new stock to arrive into our warehouse very soon. When the new stock arrives the item will be sent to you immediately. You do not have to do anything. We will keep you updated by telephone, but you will also receive an email when the goods leave our warehouse.

If the item has not arrived back into stock within 7 days, we will contact you to let you know your options. If you would like to discuss this with us in the meantime, please call our Support Team on 0870 087 0870 quoting your surname and postcode (Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm, Sat 9am - 6pm, Sun 11am, 5pm).

Thanks for shopping with us.

Regards,

The Carphone Warehouse Online Team

Will try and cancel it and try my luck in an O2 store on the day.

As others have said, the O2 Upgrade FAQ page now says

You can upgrade to iPhone 3G online, in one of our high street stores or by calling one of our upgrade advisors.

This is good news - Must remember to set my alarm early on Friday :D

- D

Are you sure of that as on the website it clearly says ONLIN ONLY

Unfortunately there is weird small print on the main page that says '8Gb Only'

Haven't got a clue why that's there!! I cannot be bothered to phone up and find out. I've had enough of these chimps.

I've have tried to order about a hundred times to upgrade my iPhone to the 3G one. It keeps changing between order forms halfway though the order process.

I must have entered by card details 5 times!

Interesting, the order system is using AJAX to load the HTML and process the options, and is spilling out a lot of debug messages to Firebug in Firefox. I am supprised they would live debug code in the order system.

Giving up

Ok, I'm hereby giving up...
Spent hours trying and now they seem out of stock and it's still not working...
I guess I won't have it from the start :(

Carphonewarehouse - 16GB is out of stock. It mysteriously says "8GB only." as a sentance in the small print on the first page. When you click through on the 16GB model, it has a little red cross and 'out of stock' label on the next page.

Plus, I need a PAC code to port my new number even from O2?

What the hell's going on?

It will all be fine

Folks, I'm sure we'll all get our upgrades sorted out soon enough. You put the code in straight after it's been texted to you. The failover page doesn't seem to work if you end up going down that route.

I'm more excited about 2.0 firmware on Friday than about my free upgrade! I'll happily wait 2 weeks for my nice new iphone, and get to use firmware 2.0 and get the set-up with Exchange and Mobileme working prior to getting the new kit.

Relax!

Ive found if you pull yourself out of the AJAX page and manually load the HTML (in safari, view activity, double click login.html i think it was) it loads much quicker and more reliably. Ive just click finish after all my details going in.
And dont bother with the failover page. I think its a page where you submit your details and someone will pick up the list later and resubmit.

What a flaming cock up, they should have done it at 3 in the morning, only the hard-core lot would be up then! But i'm going to keep trying!

+1

I've selected my phone and upgrade tariff (16gb still available) and now server not responding!! I hope I dont have to start again!

I get " There has been a problwm with taking your oder. We apologise for the inconvenience. Please try again"

I ave tried six times of entering my info into this form....thats enough

When I placed my order for 16gb model, the front page had a green ' in stock' next to both models. I initially added the 16gb model, saw the 'x out of stock' image, changed model to the 8gb and the same message. I presume it's because it's a pre-order.

Looking at the code there is loads and loads of iframes. No wonder this system is so slow all those HTTP requests. They really should have tested this with a large volumn of orders.
