Pay $.99 a week for something I can get for free from tons of iPad apps or various news websites. Yeah, I like to be force-fed biased news articles and lose money at the same time

Ignorance forgiven. The Daily is supposed to be NewsCorp's attempt at all-digital "newspaper." NYT and other traditional outlets have paper business/subscription model with large web presence. The Daily will be web only. as far as importance, I can't honestly say. There seem like a million and 10 news websites already. Time will tell if the Daily really is "important" in the long run.

From the look of all these posts, looks like ignorance really IS bliss.

One thing I hate about politics, religion, and so forth is there are so many diehard believers out there, if someone says something they disagree with, it's a lie, or distorted. Happens with both right & left wing people, so a lot of people are at fault. While I believe everyone should be entitled to their opinions, people should be open to different viewpoints and recognize that they can be wrong. I know, that's blasphemy.

The Unions single handedly destroyed American manufacturing. Case in Point, the Rust Belt.

So to fix it, we should pay Americans wages so low that it's more profitable for the worker to commit suicide? Maybe we should stop buying things so cheaply.

great to hear about other apple people and not just steve....... the Big Apple should be kept (on a) (roll)/ing..........

Oh yes, rest assured there will be plenty of Apple coverage, glowing reports, and "guest contributors" like Walt Mossberg gushing about the magical Apple.

Then there's always David Pogue, Apple's hand picked yes man, that has written huge volumes of nothing but love for Apple. This is one "exclusive" for iPad owners you won't want to miss.

Me? I'll pass... bleh!

We've got enough skewed "news" as it is from every direction. Fox, MSNBC, CNN, their all selling the cool aid, just different flavors.

Yet that said, and with all seriousness, you've got to hand it to Jobs for this stroke of genius. It's a brilliant strategy. One that has been tested and proven by newspapers for the last century. Once you are in control of content and the editorial slant, you can really influence people.

I will sit back with a big smile as I watch my stock climb higher than it's been since I bought it at less than $25 per share. I may disagree with the principles, but I love the money just as much as anyone else.

The Apple Zealots will now be super charged with hype. They will go from their current state of believing that everything Apple does is brilliant, to truly believing Apple is the only company in the world worth doing business with.

The only one that knows best, and has their personal interests in mind. A company so brilliant these followers will only have to follow (like attending church) not lead. No decision making required. Listen to the sermon and be blessed.

Yes sir, Reverend Jobs at The Church Of Apple, is quite the Inspirational Pastor.

Ignorance is bliss, but it's irresponsible. Knowledge is power. Use it for good.

Everyone has their beliefs, but what are they based on? If only there was some way to figure out if a person is lying...Nah too much work. We'll just all believe whatever's comfortable.

as usual, MR readers missing the point

the news here is not that news corp is releasing an app, its that apple is releasing the means to do subscription based payments.

hopefully this means that with newspapers and magazines we can subscribe through itunes instead of maintaining accounts on various sites. push content downloads automatically etc.

the icon for "the daily" - looks dull and boring

farcebook, vleisbroek, vleiskoek alike? 600milion+ braindead people? ehe ehe eh

"champagne, champagne for everyone!" bubbles deVere, (little britain)

ha! good boy, farck i bought at $226, eish papi, but still smiling.. anyway we digress...... the daily....... good for ipad and apple and aapl

I have a better option: I won't buy any more Apple products. I have owned at least 25 Apple computers since I bought my first 2c, and currently possess an iBook, a MacBook, and 2 MacBook Pros, plus several iPods, Time Capsule, etc., but that's the end of it. Business decisions are intrinsically political. I tried to overlook it when Jobs chose right wing, spy on American citizens, poor service as their iPhone provider, and vowed I would never buy one until they added a more progressive provider, so what do they do, they add the second most regressive phone company, Verizon, to the list. Now they get married to Rupert Murdoch of Faux News Bill O'Really and Glen cryboy Beck fame. Plus Jobs just made a large contribution to Rahm "*********g retards" Emmanuel notoriety, and Apple ranks last in worker safety among IT companies in China. http://www.ipe.org.cn/En/about/notice_de.aspx?id=9684
Come to think of it, why would Apple outsource all its manufacturing jobs to foreign countries? (Don't bother to explain, the answer is obvious, greed.) All buying decisions are political. My wife and I drive German cars because we don't buy Japanese products on account of the whale and dolphin slaughters, nor American cars because of outsourcing, and, until recently, shoddy workmanship. There is more to being an ethical citizen of the world than playing games on your iPads. Sorry, Apple, you just lost one of your better customers, but I'm sure you'll find a way to more than make it up with more regressive business alliances, and hordes of obliging customers who don't give a rat's posterior about the ethical implications of their consumerism.

Going to try to avoid the donnybrook, for now. Please answer the questions.

1. Who is a progressive telecom provider in US?
2. How is Apple "married" to Rupert Murdoch & co?
3. Why is Steve Jobs's making a political contribution to Rahm important/relevant?
4. Who is at the top of the list for Chinese Worker Safety? Apple stores don't seem that dangerous to me.
5. How are the environmental records of the automakers you bought from?

Here is the reality in a nutshell-- some people love and fight for the concept of "free speech" as long as the speech is of the kind which they they find agreeable. Any speech that digresses from their own world view is by its very nature violence inciting drivel. Moreover, anyone who disagrees with their "world view" leads an unexamined, pitiful life or is greedy beyond any possible Hollywood portrayal. In other words they may properly and justly call another "Hitler," but if someone calls someone they like "Hitler," it's dangerous.

Look, either you support the concept of the 1st Amendment and the idea of open political speech or you don't.

I want to see what this thing has to offer. As an outsider looking in, I see nothing but blind fanaticism and hypocrisy and most of it is coming from Democrats who think they represent the "left" what a joke. There is no left in US politics, just look at how easy the Republicans and Democrats are able to be "bipartisan" when then want to. There is no real diversity in the political discourse and the insane name calling and rhetoric of the supporters of the democrats is absolute lunacy.

The very same people who accuse Fox news of bias tend to blindly believe everything Huff Post says.

If you want to get the full story then you should read/watch/listen to various news sources and make up your own damn mind instead of being a damn sheep.

All buying decisions are political.

For you maybe.

For most of the rest of us it's about getting the best product at a price we can afford. Many folks don't have the financial luxury to say "I'll buy this thing from some local merchant for 5x the cost of the same thing at WalMart because I don't like the way WalMart treats the [Chinese/environment/whales/dolphins/tuna/etc].

It's probably because many people, myself included, wouldn't even use one of Rupert Murdoch's propaganda rags to wipe their arse with.

If you truly supported freedom of speech like your sig alludes to then you'd view this thread to be pertaining to the launch of a new kind of news app (not its content, still unknown, but the concept) and not NewsCorp, Murdoch, or FoxNews. But you and all the other virtual book burners want to hijack the topic to fit your own political agenda instead.

Maybe Murdoch is heading this app up. What's to say other news orgs will not follow. That is what free speech is about -- not shouting down the speaker.

Does anyone want to talk about the relevance of this announcement coming Feb 2. in NYC. I have to believe that this event will not just focus on this News Corp. app, but that it could give us a glimpse of what iTunes is going to look like in the near future.

If you have to ask that, just keep watching and reading YOUR news.
The rest of us will find a greater scope of facts and evidence without the taint of government-media propaganda.

LOL, greater scope of what Murdoch wants you to know more like
Peeps need to chill and just enjoy what the app has to offer us, not fight like dogs over whatever you lot are.

How many of these posts would you describe as rational, sensible, thoughtful, or considerate?

Politics is religion by another name. Leave it to both to bring out the absolute worst in people.

Practically, at some point, Apples will have to not censor or censure content, but simply stand back and deliver any and all content streams to their devices. While it may be disheartening to some people to see Apple stoop to the level of Playboy or News Corps inclusion, & for whatever reasons people have, however good, it is inevitable.

Screaming at one another has become the new pasttime of many nations. Even moreso that watching football on the tele. Maybe long after Apple products have taken over the world, people will get along. Arsenal and New York MetroStars!

Count Me In

I'm eagerly awaiting this. If the content is anywhere near the quality of The Wall Street Journal. I think the $1 /week is a fair price point (possibly even a *bargain*).

Granted, it's not *free* but in an economy that is near equilibrium (i.e. just about all of the "bubbles" have already "popped") ... you get what you pay for.
