Makes me think of the wireless charging dock on my old webOS Touchpad. It was pretty nice to just drop the tablet on the dock when I wasn't using it and then just grab and go later. Magnetic alignment would have made the process more efficient.
Actually thinking about this more - it would be cool if Apple would add an always on display to the iPad that is enabled when charging in a dock. Then the iPad could show information in an "exhibition mode" like webOS had.

Doesn't seem very eco friendly due to inefficiency of wireless charging but, yet, leaves out wired charger.

Or, they could just use bulk metallic glass for the entire back :) As resilient as metal, but able to be molded in precise shapes like glass.

I know of places where they use iPads en masse. And at the end of the day, being able to set them in a cubbyhole and have them ready for tomorrow instead of having to connect a cable… I can see where that’d be something an organization would want.

I too really liked that feature of the HP Touchpad, really nice to just drop it there and have the device charge.

Really enjoyed that device once I put android on it, but then I upgraded to the 3rd gen iPad and never looked back.
Same. I bought one. HP discontinued them or something and they were on sale stupid cheap maybe $100.
Put Android on it and it was nice but agree. After I went to the iPad there was no going back. I still have that tablet in a drawer someplace.

iPad should go the way of the Mac and get Mac based MagSafe. iPhone magsafe/Qi charging doesn't make any sense, it is way too slow for the size of a 13" iPad's battery. Also how is it practical at all if you have a keyboard case attached?

It's not for charging the iPad, but rather, using the iPad to charge other (smaller) devices, i.e. iPhone and AirPods etc.
That would kind of make sense for AirPods, but are you going to hold your iPad with an iPhone 13 Pro Max attached magnetically to the back? This is also rendered useless by having a keyboard or Smart Cover attached to the back.

ohh myy God! This. This is the one. This change will be what makes me consider buying a silly $1k iPad. NOT!

Wireless charging on the iPad feels long overdue for sure.
Yes please. I would love to set my iPad down on a device to wirelessly charge. I understand that the preferred method is to have a wired connection (Especially when in desktop mode), which would be ‘faster’ with a brick charger. But for me, I don’t need speed, I just prefer convenience and simple efficiency.

I think that, assuming it doesn't come at the cost of anything else (e.g., durability), it'd be a nice feature to have!

I'm working to integrate wireless charging pucks/mats integrated into furniture and I can see a future where I have a coffee table and desk with a charger built in and I can just set my iPad down on the table/desk when done and not have to worry about plugging it in.

Anytime I can reduce the number of wires strewn about (by hiding them in a table/desk, for example), I'm on board!
Yeah, I imagine leather “blotters” you can place on your desk that charge laptops and ipads wirelessly

Technically, something was lost - the flexibility of a USB-C port. Apple basically took one of the USB-C buses and tore it apart to only accept HDMI and SD card.
And left you with more USB-C ports that many other Apple laptops

Why is wireless charging preferable to say a smart connector?

If going proprietary, why not an easy attach dock with integrated charging function?
That’s how I’m now charging my iPad Pro 10.5” … because the lightning port failed. Logitech has a stand that charges through the smart connector. (Not sure how “wireless” and a “smart connector” are different)
Having a second charging method for future iPads sounds good to me. Also means I can charge while using a usb headphone port adapter.

I have 42 of the 12.9” pros and a charging rack. The cable is right next to the iPad and people don’t plug them in. You have to remove all barriers to get 100% compliance.

That’s irrelevant. It still lost 1 USB-C port compred to its predecessor. So a price was paid for the convenience of not having to use dongles.

The real upgrade would be the smart connector supporting full usb 4 transfer speed. Give me that instead of gimped wireless charging.

OK. Not sure why that is relevant in this discussion about inductive/wireless charging and iPads.

Hmm, maybe this is what the infamous AirPower is going to become. A mat of some type that has charging coils almost everywhere and allow you to put your device almost anywhere on it and MagSafe magnets will align the device to get the most power from as many coils as possible.
