Next iPhone Rumored to Carry Glasses-free 3D Display

No.

Consumers are afraid of 3D by now.

When I first got my Full 3D 1080P 144inch projector and invited my GF to watch a 3D movie, she actually googled "is watching 3D safe" and asked it if fatigues you watching it and thought people aren't made to handle 3D.

And sadly its true. I can handle it fine but some can't. And even I get my eyes watery after an hour or so.

Many people have mild fatigue from it and the average human brain just can't handle the effect comfortably enough.

As for execution from Apple, id be interested. But the masses are already done with the 3D. And on that basis alone you know the rumor can't be true that Apple wouldn't know that.

The next iPhone will be on the S cycle. I think it's a safe bet that it wouldn't include anything so radically different as a glasses free 3D screen + interface.

Won't happen, because:

1. Autostereoscopic displays will halve the perceived resolution of the display in the horizontal (-> eyes) axis.
Think of the Nintendo 3DS with a 800x240 display that will be perceived as a 400x240 display in 3D-mode.

With Apple being a bit behind the competition in pixel density, there's no way that they will now halve the horizontal resolution of their displays for a 3D effect that has been gimmicky on other devices.

They would have to increase the pixel density by a large margin before they can halve it by going 3D.

And I doubt that they would use this as a feature that you can or would have to turn on or off when you wanted to use it, it would be more like always-on but could be disabled.
So the decreased pixel density would also be an always-on thing (that could be deactivated)

2. Touching objects on a 3D display?

Just imagine your homescreen, with the icons floating above the background and also above the display itself.
Now touch an icon!

Your finger would move through the icon and destroy the illusion of 3D.

And you can't simply reverse the order of the layers of the homescreen, because Apple just created a concept for the position of each element of the homescreen (including notification center and whatever that thing that you swipe up from the bottom is called) in (virtual) 3D space with iOS 7.

Setting the display up in a way that you would perceive the content of the screen BEHIND the display glass is also something Apple wouldn't do, because they just spent a load of money to make sure that the iPad Air 2 display is flush with the frame and front glass, with no noticeable gap.

It also wouldn't solve the problem that you can't touch objects that you perceive to be behind the front glass.

i don't get the 3D hype.. after a few minutes i usually don't even notice it anymore unless something comes really close towards me.

i reckon a 3D screen would work better with an iPad, because then maybe we could play 3D games and watch 3D movies too. i think it will be a bit gimmicky on a phone though.

i've had a nintendo 3DS for years and thought the 3D worked really well, but it wasn't something that kept me going back beyond a few months. the novelty soon wears off.

and they will have to power two screens as well. the way the 3DS works, i think, is to merge two slightly different screens into one, by doing alternate vertical lines — but it's basically two different images at once, two screens. presumably that is going to be a massive power drain for a phone.

also... nintendo got a load of bad press when it came out, with everyone saying it was making them dizzy and giving them headaches. can you imagine all the apple haters jumping on board with that? it will be like bendgate all over again

Guys I like ripping into an Apple fanboy like anyone else but you guys are clearly being too negative

This is innovative!

We should be excited for this.

It's something new and apple will do it right.

The parallax feature just causes the home screen to jitter. It adds no value to the iPhone experience.

Oh joy, it's already time for iPhone 7 rumors. Who cares what iPhone 7 is like as long as it is at least 2mm thinner and easier to bend back into shape.

Remember that the 6s is first. By the time the 7 rolls out the bending will be a feature.:p

Actually my wife and I are the only ones in the whole family able to see 3d. Either the other guys can't handle it (feeling sick / fatigued) or they don't have any depth perception. So out of ten people, children not counted yet, only the two of us could even see the difference.

Hahahahaha!!!! Discontinuing the iPad Mini, hahahaha!!!! Oh, Midweek humor at its best.

Well, considering like the Mac Mini, the new iPad Mini got a shaft upgrade this year, maybe Apple wants the Minis and iPod Touch to disappear via a slow death. :(

I am surprised the touch is still selling given its expensive price. In the UK it is cheaper to get a refurb iPhone instead

I think that unless Apple can show how 3D can enhance the day to experience of using the iPhone, then it will not happen. Apple doesn't include features for the sake of looking good on a spec sheet. They want each thing they include to be in service of the user (at the risk of sounding like Jonny Ive). Steve Jobs quote that sums up what I love so much about Apple "I am just as proud of the things we didn't do as I am of the things we did"
