They have been working to put the cameras behind the screen. Personally, I think 2019 is a bit early and 2020 is more likely.
Look at the diameter of the actual glas element of the (front-facing) camera. There can be no active display over that area without blocking most of the light (and affecting what the camera captures by the light of the pixels of the display). At some point, you might be able put a large number of really tiny cameras that peek between screen pixels (though I'd still say the display will need to give up a pixel or two for each tiny camera) and do computational photography (ie, assembling an image from a large number of separate cameras).

Apple: "we have listened to your complaints and feedback and we are now offering a full screen display starting at only $1300 for 64gb"

BAM!

It's simply having a sensor that will work under the glass. It's the glass that requires the breakthrough. It's always been about the glass. Gorilla Glass (or Apple's version) gets it's strength from nano sized particles of metal infused within, among other processes. This interferes with any scanning, bouncing, penetrating, etc...... IMO, Corning and Apple are close. 2019 could be the year. I think Apple will be going back to a fingerprint scanner under the screen in 2 years. :apple:

What would be the point? Face ID has advantages as it is and it will only get better. By the time you look at your screen and identify where to put your finger, your phone would be unlocked with Face ID. There is no point to go back to fingerprint scanning when you have a method that requires no physical input.

I am no engineer, but there are patents for putting the tech behind the screen. It will become reality eventually, just not sure on 2019. No big deal to me either way.

"Less than $8.33 more per month on our new and improved 36-month payment plan."

"Only $5 more per month in our new 60-month option."

Even a $2,000 phone can be spun as "only $8.33 more per month" if you stretch out the terms long enough (120 months).

See the future.

Really? You mean to say that as technology advances, you are able to make components smaller?

Well if that’s true, then surely any old idiot with half a brain and access to the internet could hazard a guess that the notch would be smaller net time.

Oh, wait, they did when I (and probably hundreds of others on here) said it months ago :p

You guys know how we'll end up with a notch-less design and "no bezels" right? It's basically going to be an S8/S9 looking phone where there's a small top and/or bottom space (because cameras and speakers have to go somewhere) and zero side bezel but without the curved display - which even Samsung is curving less and less each year. Ultimately the designs of these phones are going to be identical to achieve what everyone wants and at that point you'll just be picking your OS.

Considering Joni's involvement, anything less than a protruding notch is a winner

Yeah and we’ll be forever complaining because of accidental touches. Hell I complain enough with my iPad Pros’ smaller bezels. I’m forever turning pages accidentally when I’m lying in bed.

I remain SUPER interested in the iPhone SE (2018) - or better yet iPhone X MINI. These phones are too big. I'm a filmmaker and want to shoot documentary work in 4K on a smaller unit. A phone that fits in your hand and can be more inconspicuous is preferable to these PHABLETS.

Any updates there?

It’s pretty stupid to me when people say things like: “I love the notch! It gives a unique look”, and only comfirms to me that they’re only saying this because it’s Apples latest and greatest and they have no other choice if they want the X. You put up with it, you don’t love it. When Apple eventually gets rid of it like this article suggests, will those people honestly be saying: “Oh no! They get rid of the notch! Why :( definitely not upgrading now!”. No, I highly doubt it. So therefore they do not “love” the notch at all, they simply put up with it because they don’t have any other choice right now.

I like the notch. I think it looks futuristic. It has no effect, positive or negative, in regards to the use of the phone though so ultimately I am good with or without.

Personally I don’t like the notch. What I do like is the little bit of extra screen real estate it gives us to accommodate what would normally be the status bar.

The more they shrink it, the more of that we get. Which is just fine with me. So in a way I do like the notch, just kind of in reverse :D

I want to see how they pull off the all glass display with no notch then truly then we have the dream iPhone

People, don't get your hopes up. The only reason we are dealing with notches and FaceID is because Apple failed at incorporating the touch ID behind the screen. Talking now about incorporating FaceID behind the screen is crazy talk, it won't happen anytime soon.

[edit: Synaptics] has developed a fingerprint sensor which is embedded under the display and is being used by Vivo.

I’ll be happy to see the notch gone, I went to buy a new phone this year and ended up with an 8 Plus over the X mostly because of the notch. It was a beautiful phone and I’m sure I would have gotten used to it but the screen size felt awkward in my hand as well and the price was another factor. I just got an 8 and used the money I saved for AirPods.
