No thanks.

If that's the case I'll use my current iPad Pro until it breaks and I won't buy another iPad.

It's not that I don't have the money but I just don't think it's worth it or get good value anymore. Apple are straight up ripping everyone off and are trying to see how far they can go. It's been this way for years of course but it's getting worse every year.

Already seriously considering not buying another iPhone. Apple shouldn't be allowed to get away with this but you'll always get the hardcore fanboys buying anything they push out no matter the price.

The bubble is going to burst at some point. Already people with a lot of disposable money are turning against Apple. Even schools/colleges are moving away from Apple because of the extortionate prices. It'll eventually just be for the rich.

It's pure greed from Apple. Disgusting.

Honestly OLED is a bit over-valued. I have several OLED devices and several IPS&Liquid Retina devices. Sure, the OLED has a bit nicer contrast ratio, is a little bit "cleaner" and has better dark areas which is undebatable but it's not that dramatic these days. I'd rather see the iPads gain more useful software features that would make it even better as a desktop replacement.

All I ask is for 12,9" iPad Air with 60Hz LCD screen and I'll be fine. Don't care about XDR ProMotionSuperHiperMegaCool refreshing rate.

This has to be false. That’s a huge increase. There’s no way I’ll buy another iPad Pro at that price. And OLED is the feature I most want in an upgrade.

Of course hopefully iPad prices don’t get higher, but comparison with Mac prices are silly.

I don’t care if a MBA costs less than an iPad: if I want a tablet, with tablet hardware, form factor, and OS, I will buy an iPad.

No one says the iPhone is too expensive because the M1 MBA is cheaper, even if they share a lot of functionality.

In both case there might be overlapping target customers, but in general they’re the minority. Tablets and Macs are very different devices

"According to The Elec, the supply price of OLED panels for existing 10-inch devices is around $100 to $150, whereas the outlay for the processes involved in making Apple's required 11-inch and 13-inch panels may be closer to $270 and $350, respectively."

If it's costing Apple an 80% increase to make an 11" and 13" OLED then they are doing something very wrong.

As others have already pointed out, Samsung have being using OLED's in their tablets for some time now and at a fraction of the cost of Apples 'planned' price increases. Apple cannot therefore justify their price increases to factors other than greed because Samsung are under the same economic and supplier constraints as Apple is and yet they have not substantially increased the price of their tablets.

Therefore, if Samsung can do it on the cheap, why can't Apple? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's a duck. Apply that to Apple and it translates to if it looks like greed and smells like greed then it is greed.
And Samsung tablets’ OLED displays are (among other downsides) significantly less bright than the iPP’s miniLED. If they switch to OLED, I don’t think they’ll include a worse display.

Not about to scroll through 80 comments, so sorry if someone else already suggested this:

Maybe there will be an OLED iPad with a very high price...but right next to models with current display technology (mini-LED, LCD) at prices we are seeing now.

Apple isn't about to alienate an entire customer base.

I shudder to think what an iPad Ultra will cost.

I do not like the sound of this. Mainly because I could see these price points being accurate. Sounds inline with Apple's recent pricing trajectory. I do not feel Apple's unrelenting price increases have aligned with salary or inflation increases. That part is bothersome, as a customer. And as much as this would prevent me from being an iPad OLED customer, if the market will support it, why would Apple not push it? They are in the business of making money. Period. I will be super curious to see how a $1,500 11" iPad Pro is received.

And if these price rumors turn out to be real, iPad Pro will have to be more than a slate of glass that runs iPadOS.

Edited to address several typos. 🤪

In my mind, the only way this works is if Apple combines the fridge and the toaster. And Microsoft has made it possible by discontinuing the Surface Book (imho the best product they made). At these price points, the lower deck—the keyboard and trackpad—becomes a much less significant component of the build-of-materials… so add that as an “accessory”! And no, not like Magic Keyboard. Or make it like the keyboards and mouse/trackpad with the iMac and give the customer the choice at purchase time. But given the dimensions of the MacBook Pro, we’re right at the point where the iPad Pro with a screen like that starts to look an awful lot (to me) like the Surface Book… with the right bottom deck! The Magic Keyboard just doesn’t cut it for pro work vs the laptop paradigm.

Add to that the rumors of the Mac Pro potentially using compute modules (which, again imho, is a FANTASTIC idea: puts “the cloud” on your desktop!), and it could mean that an Apple “iPad Book Pro” would have CPUs and batteries in both the iPad AND “book” deck and could use both to significantly extend compute performance when mated, unlike the Surface Book (which only gained a better GPU). With Apple, and the M3’s GPU and ML cores, doubling the capability of the iPad Pro would also be double the current MacBook Pro! That would be pretty stunning performance-wise. The iPad would work like an iPad when separated and MBP/macOS when mated; the switching could be invisible.

Tie that “deck” with AirPlay and an iMac, and you have a muscled up Raspberry Pi 300 keyboard for schools. Or use Type C/Thunderbolt for pros.

There is an opportunity here. Lots. (Oh, and Apple: if you’re trolling here for ideas: MAGNETS. LOTS AND LOTS OF MAGNETS! AND ELECTROMAGNETS!)

No way this happens.
Huge price increases require a product with huge new user benefits. The advantages of LED-to-OLED on a tablet are extremely subtle and not at all obvious without a side-by-side comparison of very specific content.

I have a 2021 11” iPad Pro purchased at $899 and I’m not even remotely tempted to replace it at any price, let alone at 167% of what I paid for it.

It is a little important to remember that these prices are not confirmed in any way... They're just that, rumors. So, maybe it won't be so bad and they'll find a way to cut production costs to hand us an easy to swallow $900 for 11" and $1200 for 13".

Then again, maybe not...

Sure, why not? 🤷‍♂️

iPads are exactly like MacBooks, and can easily replace them.

Right?

Besides, they always have the “Ultra” label they can slap on there. That’s worth at least $800 right there.

Ouch. At that price I'd count myself out. Even for a device I'd only be upgrading every 4-5 years, just not worth it for a big consumption device no matter how good it is. I suppose I can only hope they keep a 12.9" version of something around at the current price point, mini LED is plenty good enough for me if that's the catch for OLED.

If those prices are real, I’d likely hold onto my current iPad Pro 12.9 2020 for a lot while longer. Even then, when it comes time to upgrade, I’d probably look towards a Surface Pro or similar.

We need to HOLD and not buy at that price! if people buy then Apple will think that is acceptable!! and that will be the new price for the future.
Inevitable. If there’s yahoos out there with more money than they know or care how to spend it, Apple’s going to give them something to spend their money on.

Just like a pair of $2999 goggles. They will sell out… and be in high demand… and sell for huge markups on eBay.

Introducing the iMortgage, our newest product in the Apple Pay lineup. Now you can finance your OLED iPad purchase over 30 years with a fixed interest rate. You can even get a tax deduction on your interest payments!
Can you imagine an Apple Car? I’m guessing $199k. Apple loves their 99’s

$1200 for an iPad that doesn't even run Final Cut Pro...but yea it's for professionals

Apple loves its price ladder where each step in the product line is just a little more expensive than the last.

Looking at an iPad Air, well I want more storage, but if I add more storage it would just a little more to get an iPad Pro. The customer winds up spending more than they intended. MKBHD had a great video on it.

That being said, this price increase destroys that ladder model. Crazy if this happens.
Exactly.

I imagine a professional would buy a regular iPad to use for simple tasks, and use the money saved towards other more important things.
