I've not heard of Banshee before. I'm going to give this a go on my Ubuntu installation and N1 today.

Thanks! :)

Its not in the standard repository, you can see it in the list of available software but there is no install option.

This link should work automatically

apt://banshee

It will automatically open apt and install for you. SWEEET

If not, go here

http://banshee-project.org/download/

click on the Ubuntu logo and then "click here to install"

Thankyou! :D

here is a screenshot of it syncing, I mean who doesn't love screenshots?

Out of curiosity, those of you who switched, do you see yourself buying an iPhone 4G if it beats out the specs of the Nexus One?

Say it has:

4" Super AMOLED
720p Video record
OS 4.0 changes (multi-tasking,etc)
and more..

I'm assuming most of you have stayed with AT&T and have paid the $529. I do plan on upgrading from my 3G this summer, but I'm not taking the risk now with a few months left.

Like the others have said, if it drastically improves the notification system, has a better screen, I'll get it without question. I don't mind buying my phones outright, hell, I've bought each edition of the iPhone that way. But I also wanna see a new, sleeker design. After holding and using the N1 for a while now, the iPhone just feels and looks so seriously outdated when I hold it. Like comparing a '90's model laptop to a current one. The software still performs, but the look of the iPhone needs some serious work to catch up to the N1. It just looks and feels so good in the hand. Haven't met an iPhone owner yet that hasn't said "damn that looks good. What is it?"

does it get frozen that often? I have a 3G and I don't remember that last time my phone froze. Android still have more work to do.

No, I just meant in general, with any technology.
My N1 has never locked up. It got kind of slow once after I first got it. I had been installing and un-installing 6 or 7 apps in a row (some of them were garbage). I just had to turn off the phone and back on again.

You waiting for the Evo ViViD? It'll be even harder to switch if Apple announce some killer additions to the next iPhone.

Exciting times ahead! :D

Haha, yea. I'm waiting for the Evo now. I figure if the iPhone comes out with even better features I can always decide to get that. It's a win win!

Except the iPhone plan will cost me about $900 more over the 2 years than going back to my families plan with Sprint. All things I'll have to think about.

EDIT:
As far as Banshee goes... I'm a fan of Banshee. It's a nice player. Good to know it syncs with Android phones too. Although, I should have guessed. Haha.

By the way R.Perez, what dock are you using? Also, have you tried the new 10.04 beta1? It looks really sleek.

I made the switch to the Nexus One because I was kind of tired of AT&T and Apple. My contract was up months ago, so I switch to T-Mobile, and I will agree that there is not as much 3G service, but I will get to that in a moment.

The Physical
The Nexus One does not look like an iPhone, but it looks just as gorgeous. The only complaint I have from the physical design is a lack of a silent button, but you can silent your phone in less than a second.

The Software
This is where the biggest difference is between the two phones, that and the specifications. This uses Android's latest OS (2.1). There is a lot of customization any user can do without rooting (aka jailbreaking). Again, there are not nearly as much applications, but the applications on the market are very useful. I can remember scrolling through hundreds of duplicated applications or pretty much spam applications in the App Store.

Verdict
I have had my phone for about a week, and it fits my needs a lot better than the iPhone did. Both phones are extremely good, and I am in no way saying the Nexus One is better than the iPhone. Let's be honest, no phone that can come out will be able to beat the iPhone, Apple has a well-established "ecosystem" for their phones -- Android does not. If you have the money to buy an unlocked version, I would give it a try.

Side Note
This is kind of funny, when I first got it I put my AT&T sim card so I could roam around with Edge for a little until I got my T-Mobile phone. My Dad also has an iPhone 3G, and we did a speed test in the browser (Edge vs 3G). Now this is not a fair test at all, so the results were hilarious. Before I tell you the results, we live in Shamong, NJ and there is a cell tower literally right across the street for AT&T. I loaded up the full version of Engadget on both phone (Nexus One with AT&T Edge and iPhone 3G with AT&T 3G). The Nexus One literally won every test in the browser, which is backwards. I am leaving the results up to poor 3G in my area, but Edge was extremely fast for AT&T where I live, I guess.

If anyone would like any pictures, or personal questions answered, I will subscribe to this thread and answer PMs.

Thanks,
Ethan

I just did a fresh install of the 10.4 beta (very nice), installed Banshee (sudo apt-get install banshee) and am copying my music over to the Ubuntu install right now.

After that is done, the fun begins! :D

Nice!!! I haven't had the time to fix my desktop so I'm running 10.04 in a virtual machine using VirtualBox on my iMac. I'm excited to get it all set up on it's own. :)

Banshee = Very nice. Native last.fm support is a winner! :D

Now, does the Nexus One support ogg at all? I may re-rip my CD's to ogg if so. They're currently MP3/MP4 files but a session of re-ripping my won't hurt.

Should I make the switch?

EDIT: Doh, so it does.

Well, I'm switching to Android too...but I'm getting a HTC Hero instead. (much cheaper, lets me use old 1st gen iPhone data plan)...do I still get to play? :)

Ya for some reason banshee changed all my .flac files to .flac but in an .ogg container.

As far as the dock, ive messed with all the fancy ones awn etc etc, but right now I am going old school!!! That is just an enlarged panel, that I have changed the transparency on and added only launchers to, and set not to expand.

I haven't tried 10.04, I use my laptop for school so I usually stick to stable builds.

Ok... I guess ;) You in Europe? I like your version of the Hero better. I almost jumped on that one this past summer.

Nice! I may try that. Get a little more Mac feel into my desktop. It's an Athlon64 and more of a pain than I want to deal with to get it to run OSX. :)

I notice that sometimes EDGE is faster than 3G as well. I suspect that the 3G bandwidth is overloaded with people it actually frees up the EDGE bandwidth.

:)

Nope, in the good ol' US of A. However, the Canadian carrier Telus sells the Euro-style Hero with 3G that is ATT-compatible. So I got an unlocked Telus Hero (which, incidentally, has no carrier branding on it whatsoever...which is nice)

Lostprophet: as an FYI, ATT has been routinely catching people with the original (Tmo 3G) Nexus and auto-bumping them to the more expensive data plan...I'm guessing that they'll do the same on the ATT 3G Nexus One too, but that's just a guess.

The Nexus One remix phone, lol. Good luck getting updates.

Well you could just root to get the updates but I know what you're saying. Either way that won't come to America for ages let alone Canada, so if the new iPhone isn't to my satisfaction I'll get the Nexus One FOR SURE unless the Evo is for sale in Canada, also doubtful.

Also remember a bit back when I was asking people for information on how bad the touch buttons are on the Nexus? Well I found a youtube video that showcases it very very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryByZuXihV0

It's not too bad actually, I could see it being a minor annoyance for a while (before I get used to it). It's not TERRIBLE, it's not even BAD, just a bit off. The guy making the video seems too intent on pushing them rather than hovering his finger on them which would probably help. Would be better if it wasn't like that though (of course) :p

how's 3G coverage on T mobile? Portland OR

any experience on the 3G T mobile network?

I am thinking of switching from ATT but don't know about T mobile 3 G in Portland OR. They have good voice coverage but ?? data??.

If this isn't the right thread, let me know where to put this and find some answers.

Love the HTC Desire.....can buy it unlocked from ASIA probably.

Just moved from Portland not three months ago.

T-Mobile 3G is good and reliable, but not as fast as AT&T, their pricing and customer service though is top notch. I would also like to add, 3G on the beefed up Nexus One vs my old G1 is SO MUCH FASTER. I think the underpowered hardware on the G1 really hurt speeds.
