Ok, what would be the reasoning for buying T mobile Nexus One without signing a 2 yr contract? You do better with 2 yr contract and it's not like the T mobile Nexus One can use ATT 3G network (can use EDGE but not 3G due to it's band). What am I missing?? Both are unlocked anyway since you buy directly from Google.

On a side note, why is the Nexus dock so expensive?

The dock has Bluetooth built in. It uses that to interface to the phone with. The physical contacts in the base are just to charge the phone. So, I assume this adds to the cots. From what I have read, the dock auto-pairs with the phone when you dock it.

The dock also includes cables to connect to your speakers as well as a second wall charger (very convenient). The dock has a BlackBerry charging pod type implementation, no need to move around and "find" the port. Just pop it in and you're good.

Also for you Nexus One owners that have your devices rooted, there is this AMAZING application call SetCPU (In the market). I have gone from 6 hours of usage to 10 hours just by using this application, no joke.

What it does is allow you to set your processor speed say for example when you reach a certain % of battery or when you are charging the device. The best profile you can set is when the device is locked.

I have it set so my processor goes down to 384 mhz when I have my N1 locked which makes sense because I don't need 1GHZ when I am not using it. And when you unlock the device, I have it set so it goes back to 1GHZ. It really is amazing and makes me love my N1 even more because of this type of customization.

It costs $.99 and is worth every single penny. It even has a little widget and notification bar too. Go get it :)

Holy crap! I just rooted the device and installed some of the apps you've mentioned on here. Rooting and installing the cyanogenmod in and of itself makes this phone seem like a real beast now. Wow, I thought it was fast before, but DAMN!! Firing up TaskPanel and seeing almost 250mb of free RAM even when multitasking is insane! That himem tweak to allow access to the additional RAM is amazing. This phone absolutely screams now. And the customization offered by the apps you've listed make this thing a dream of a phone. Being able to have the cpu gear down when not in use (sleeping), or after the battery drops below a certain percentage, or hell, any limitations I set, is great. And from what I read, it appears that the cyanogenmod may have the Neon optimizations for ARM architecture floating point optimizations that help with graphics acceleration, so that may explain why program animations that might get a bit slow before now are seriously smooth as can be. I can't choke this phone down now, no matter what I do or how much crap I run. I'm as happy as can be right now with the N1, even more than when I moved to my 3GS from my 3G. It now seems like a BIGGER jump in performance (versus my 3GS) than when I went from the 3G to the 3GS.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, and keep them coming if you don't mind, if you discover yet more tips like these. It's going to take one hell of an iPhone upgrade in both hardware AND OS to get me to leave this phone when the June/July Apple refresh happens.

Not a problem man :). Rooting the N1 and installing the Cyanogen Mod indeed makes the device that much more better. The amount of customization is actually breath taking and there is so many things you can do its tough to decide what to do first haha:D

how hard is it to root the N1

With the iPhone all I did was use pwnagetool and SSH at most, is it harder than that? or i should be fine?

Its not as easy as the iPhone jailbreak. There are a lot more steps and files to download but there are lots of forums and a large community waiting to help

@Vandam your avatar kind of freaks me out... no offence, lol!! Then again that's probably why you chose it.:)

To avoid the contract bit.

Also, I believe someone did the math, and it's actually possible to have a lower TCO over two years by purchasing the non-contract N1 and getting a cheaper plan with T-Mobile. I don't remember it being a huge difference, though, and I unfortunately can't seem to find the article right now.

tmobile plans are cheaper when you dont buy a subsidized phone, so you save $10-20 every month and also your not locked into a contract

Well, it's back to the iPhone...

I am returning my N1 :(
I am unable to get it to pair correctly with my car's bluetooth (Lexus IS).
This, unfortunately is a deal breaker. Got to have bluetooth working in the car. I'm bummed out.

I had to call HTC (not Google) to arrange the return. I have to say the HTC customer support was excellent. I got right through to a very friendly gal.

That should pair... I'm almost 100% positive it supports Hands-Free over bluetooth. If you don't want to figure it out, no forcing you. :)

I've tried. I have found other threads (xda-developers) from other Lexus owners having the same problem. The phone pairs, but I get one way audio. One work around that helps is to turn off the phones BT - start the car - turn on the phones BT. But, that's something I am not willing to do every time I get in the car.
When I talked to the HTC rep, she acknowledged that this is a somewhat common problem. She said especially with Inifiniti's (though mine is a Lexus).

Believe me - I don't want to go back to the 3GS! Maybe I'll wait for the Desire to be available in the US.

That's a weird bug... that sucks. No chance of switching to Sprint right? :p

Sucks - it does.
I had Sprint before (I was an early Palm Pre user) and the reception in my area is really bad - Sprint is not an option.

I really like the Android O/S. What a pleasure it was not to have to use iTunes!
I'll have to wait and see what comes out in the US market. I would consider a Droid, but I would have to pay cancellation fees to switch to Verizon.

If the iPhone does let me down in the Summer and I end up getting the Nexus One or something, I just read this that made me happy. You guys should check it out too:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/29/exclusive-android-froyo-to-take-a-serious-shot-at-stemming-plat/

Interesting and definitely a good idea. Basically this will cut down on actual Android updates and reserve them for core functions rather than things that could be bundled into Apps. This gives manufacturers more time to distribute their OS upgrades (because they should be a little less frequent), which gives developers less versions to develop for.

Bravo Google.

I'm thinking about going back to Nexus from my 3GS. My primary needs are games, messaging, and email. I'm wondering what could sway me back.

By the way I would just like to add, Banshee + Ubuntu + Nexus One has given me the smoothest syncing process to date.

I am officially moving my entire music library from my iMac to my laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

I just wanted to back up R.Perez's claims about Banshee. I've only just gotten around to re ripping some of my music (now in OGG) and syncing my Nexus One using it and it is the most iTunes like expereicne for syncing media on the N1.

Linux users should definately give it a spin!

Cool. I just installed 10.04 on my computer yesterday after a while of being stuck in Win7. I installed Banshee and got all my mp3s imported in preparation for my next phone. :)

still waiting for my Nexus to come in today. Sadly I was doing some more research and the "multitouch" problems I have been looking into are starting to scare me.

From anyone coming from a 3gs to a N1 does the glitches with multitouch effect you while using the phone. Might be a problem when I text or type period since I am fast typer on iPhones. I don't know now, luckily if I don't like it today and tomorrow I found someone in my area on craigslist with a mint 3GS that someone wants to trade for a Nexus one.

I have no problems whatsoever coming from my 3GS. The multitouch has been fine. Like I've mentioned earlier in this thread, the biggest thing I think people need to be aware of is that since the N1 has so little bezel surrounding the screen, it's very, very easy for part of your hand to rest unnoticed on the screen itself, which will "confuse" the digitizer and throw the touch screen off. I've had no problems at all once I've learned how to hold it without touching the screen other than where I want to press. In fact, I think with the stock firmware, my N1 screen is actually more sensitive than the 3GS's screen. Since loading the custom Cyanogenmod firmware, my touchscreeen's sensitivity is absolutely perfect. I have had no problem typing as fast on the N1 as I do the 3GS, but that is with the 3rd party "Better Keyboard" installed. I'm not quite as fast with the stock android keyboard.

I don't have any multitouch glitches. I only used normal texting for a couple of hours, I later found Swype and its SOO much faster then regularly texting.
