If they pick up 2 yards then he is a genius. It all comes down to execution and the players didn't get it done. I would have probably punted, but I understand where he was coming from.

As a Pats fan, I found myself confused when I saw the final minutes of the game ticking down. I watched the whole thing, but it was just so jarring to see my team, who seemed to dominate the Colts for most of the game, fall in the final minutes.

The Colts did what they do best - play sound, solid football - and outplayed the Pats in the second half. They so subtly chipped away at the deficit, that before anyone knew it, they were within a score of us.

Then came the 4th down. Bill did exactly what anyone expected him to do - he looked Indy right in the face, whipped it out, and said "let's see whose is bigger". Unfortunately, Mr. 3rd down Faulk was a tiny bit short (stopped by the fill in for Bob Sanders, no less), and the Pats didn't have any time to answer back. The real error here was burning the 2nd half timeouts so early, not going for it deep in their own territory - the dominant team took a gamble that would have closed the game out. Makes sense to me.

I was so excited to see the Colt's streaks end. Though Pats/Colts isn't the intense rivalry that the media made them it to be, they are still the two most dominant teams from the last 10 years. It's a treat whenever they play each other, and as a football fan, this game was no exception.

We'll see Brees in a couple weeks, and hopefully try to do what we couldn't quite do last night.

Classiest pro-Pats comment I've ever read. If only every Pats fan from the East had this attitude. The game was a nail-biter for sure. The Colts played a TERRIBLE first half. They really came out the second half and did what they're so good at doing. I think the real test is if we can stand up to Baltimore next week...on their turf.

epic ending. bill really should have punted.

The way Manning and the Colts were marching down the field in the 4th? (2 TD in the span 2 minutes each) Wouldn't have made a difference, IMO. If I were the coach, I'd go for as well. The Pat's D was pooped and decimated. I rather place the game in the hands of the powerful O rather than a gassed D. Would have been nice if the Faulk had gotten the 1st.

I root for 2 teams: the whipping boy of the AFC South:( and anyone playing the Colts.:D

This is a familiar tune for Pats fans. First half domination, second half damnation. I'm pleased that the Pats can clearly go toe-to-toe with the NFL elite (let's face it, the Colts are undefeated right now) and hold their own (kinda). This makes me feel all tingly for the post-season.

Really? Not for me,just yet anyways. The Colts have won 5 of the last 6 meetings between these two teams. Odds are,a post season game between the two will be in Indy. It's amazing how Manning's record vs the Pats changed once Ty Law left.He was Manning's kryptonite. I think you can officially say that Manning is in BB's head..No doubt there.
As for the game:
It's about halftime adjustments. In the Pat's three losses, they've been outscored 47-10. The Pats great offense has scored a grand total of 10 points in the second half of the three losses. And that came last night. All three games we had half time leads (6 against the Jets, 10 against the Broncos and Colts). Last night, 4th quarter leads of 17 and 13 points (with 4 minutes to go). This falls on the coaches IMO.
Defensively they need to change their philosophy against high powered offenses. The bend but don't break works until the team is gassed. I'd rather see them take more chances and have more left at the end. 03, 06, & 09 are proof of this especially in the dome.
Offensively, enough of the shotgun draw. It's not going to fool anybody.Red zone woes continue for the offense.. Seems like the offense got conservative with the lead, aka coaching to not lose.
Bottom line for the Pats..Unless this defense improves over the next two months,it's not going to matter how many points Brady and the O put up. Without a championship D,you're not going to win the SB. The 03+04 teams are perfect examples. Shutdown D's capable of holding a lead..

I will add that there's a chance that the Patriots can have a winning season, and yet again not make the postseason.

Right now, I have my doubts about the Patriots. While Indy can be the team to watch in the AFC, and perhaps is the best the AFC has to offer, that would mean someone like the Vikings or Saints would make quick work of them in the Super Bowl. Manning had a great last quarter, but who the heck was the QB for Indy in the first three quarters? That has to scare some Indy fans.

I am believing in the Vikings, as they have Favre, but it's just surreal to think of the Saints going to the postseason and maybe even the Super Bowl. Probably the strangest comeback from NFL shame to eventual Super Bowl ring was when Tampa Bay won it. The Saints can gain longtime respect if they win it all. In my mind, they are the only team left that has never won a Super Bowl or had record breaking players on their team. One could slam the Browns or the Lions, but they had superheroes like Kosar and Sanders. The Saints' biggest claim to fame is that they had Ditka for a time, but even he could not help a team that ultimately had only 3 division championships in 42 seasons, and took 20 seasons to get a winning season.

The Bengals just signed Larry Johnson. I guess they felt they needed another player with off the field baggage now that Chris Henry is out for the rest of the season and the rest of their misfits have been too well behaved to get arrested.

I agree that the last thing the Bengals need is more drama, but hopefully after the past few weeks LJ has realized that he isn't the bulletproof superstar he was 2 years ago. If he gets knocked down even one peg, he can be a major threat, especially while splitting carries with Benson. With Benson and LJ in the backfield, and a healthy Palmer throwing to Ochocinco and Caldwell, this looks like a team with a whole lot of potential.

Do we know how bad Benson's injury is from Sunday? The risk is can LJ keep his ego in check and be willing to do what is asked as opposed to thinking because he's LJ he should just be given the keys to the kingdom.

Benson is "iffy" for next week (per Yahoo! Sports). I'm surprised he has lasted this long.

Yes, that is the huge question. You would think a talented guy like LJ would eventually learn, but pro sports, and especially the NFL, has taught us not to overestimate the maturity of superstar athletes.

I really look forward to seeing how they handle this.

you forgot to mention the defense which is 2nd against the rush and held the steelers to 0 offensive touchdowns. they shut down teams in the redzone.
LJ is most likely an insurance sign in case benson is out indefinitely. I dont really like the sign because scott and leonard are good enough to start over him. he has to come in and learn a new offense, i doubt he'll see much action this weekend. I'd give the ball to scott. Again they are 7-2, 5-0 in the division, and are a lock for the playoffs.

If Miami holds tonight, it will be interesting to see how the Pats operate with someone at their heels. At this point in the season, I expected New England to be one of the undefeated teams in the NFL. I don't know if the Pats will continue to be great for the next fews years, but never win a ring again with their core oldtimer squad.

A similar thing happened to the 49ers after their 5th Super Bowl win. Some people thought they would continue to six or seven rings, but the team stayed strong and respectable after their latest ring, but their core guys were getting older, or injured, and the newer talent was not going to end up being the same as who dominated in their 1981-1994 seasons. It didn't help that SF lost Owens and Garcia. I think if the Pats have anymore championships in them, it better happen this season, because last time I checked their best talent are not getting any younger.

That being said the Vikings' Favre and Colts' Manning defy the old man disease, but this year could likely be their last realistic chance.

Huh? "Core old-timer squad" ? The only two "old-timers" left from the Pats' Super Bowls are Brady, Belichick, and Kevin Faulk. Maybe you could throw Matt Light in there but he sucks. Every other position has had turnover of some sort if my memory serves me right.

Manning isn't that old (33) and has pretty much always played at a high level. With Favre it seems that whenever he sucks (often) people attribute it to his age, but whenever he's playing well they just chalk it up to "experience." ********. Favre is at the end of his career but Manning is arguably playing the best football he ever has since week 7 of last season.

How many years have you followed football? We are not talking about golf here. ;)

Anyway, 49ers lose. Bummer. And the Cardinals pad their lead in the NFC West.

The NFC East, the perennially talented division who are not showing it this season, can become a musical chairs scenario so I won't even venture to guess who wins that division, even with injuries.

That seems highly unlikely to me, given the strength of the other teams in the AFC East.

Do you think the Pats are toast?

Sometimes they look like the dominant team they used to be, but other times they look like the best they can do is 9-7.

They have a dismal 1-3 road record with 4 road games left. To me, it does not look like a great year for them. Indy in the AFC seems to be the one to beat right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they finished on top and met up with NO or MN in the Super Bowl.

I wouldn't get too hung up on rankings/seedings going into the playoffs. Since 2000,only one number one seed has won a Super Bowl and two of the last four SB winners have been wild cards. In the NFL,unlike other sports, the best team in the regular season doesn't always translate over to the best team in the post season...Last year was another example..
