Ok now we can officially christen this thread as we are a day away from the start of the season.

Did Oakland get their new player yet or is Seymour going to hold out the entire season.:p

Not yet apparently..Seymour's ALWAYS been about the money. He held out in 06 until he got his former deal from the Pats.Ironic for a guy who held out, talked about "the business" and generally seemed like he was in NE to do a job and nothing more. Be careful what you wish for.
I’m told reliably that Richard Seymour isn’t looking for a long-term contract from the Raiders, that in fact his absence centers solely on his unhappiness with the trade. The comments from coach Tom Cable are really irrelevant since the trade papers have been signed and approved by the league office. He counts on the Raiders’ 53-man roster, so how does Seymour need to clear things up with the Patriots? All that remains is for Seymour to show up and pass his physical. There’s nothing left for the Patriots to do regarding Seymour because he’s now the property of the Raiders, so many NFL observers were left shaking their heads after hearing Cable’s comments.

How in the he** do you complete a trade without the player you're trading for getting a physical  Oh yeah,it's Al Davis and the Raiders..

If I was traded from the Pats to the Raiders I would probably throw a fit. Can Seymour be fined for not showing up or can this drag on a few weeks.

I'm sure it stinks to go from one of the best teams in the league to one of the worst, but that's the business. He needs to show up and do his job or retire, simple as that. Holding out or not showing up is only going to lead to fines and hurt his chances of getting on with another team in the future if that's what he wants. When players act like this it just makes them look bad and damages their credibility with fans. The days of franchise loyalty or playing your entire career in one place are over. Only in extremely rare cases will this happen in today's sports world.

Just out of curiosity does the NFL have "no trade clauses" like MLB? I've never heard of a player having one in pro football.

NFL spokesman Michael Signora has outlined for us the procedure that would apply, if Seymour stays away.

The precise protocol is determined by the terms of the trade. "Traditionally the first condition is that the trade is contingent upon the player or players reporting and passing a physical," Signora said.

If the player doesn't report, the two teams can try to come up with a new agreement, or the trade could be called off.

The only leverage that can be exerted against the player is the dreaded "five-day letter," a precursor to placement on the reserve/left squad list.

"The club sends a letter to the player warning him that, in five days, the club has the right to place him on the reserve/left squad list," Signora said. "It explains to him that if they do place him in that category, he cannot play again this season, etc. After sending that letter and the expiration of the five-day period, the club does not have to place the player on the reserve/left squad list, but it may do so."

Allowing the player to prevent a trade by not showing up would be a horrible loophole and set a terrible precedent. We'll see if he gets the five day letter..

Does he still get paid if they put him on reserve.

I don't think so. That's why NFL contracts have a "guaranteed" $ amount. The player is guaranteed to get that amount as a signing bonus or a salary spread out over a set number of years. The rest of the contract amount is all contingent upon the contract terms. For example, Eli Manning just signed like a 96 million dollar contract extension, but I think around 30 something of it was guaranteed. So for sure over the next 6 years he will get the guaranteed part, but the other 60 something million is based on other things. In the case of Seymour I believe he will get his guaranteed money, but outside of that I don't think he has to be paid if he's not showing up for work.

And if he gets suspended, 2009 doesn't count as a season for him, so he's not a FA at the end of the year.

He just needs to suck it up and go play for Oakland for this one season, and then he can sign a huge free agent contract at the end of the season with whatever team he wants.

Exactly..Seymour needs to sack up and show up. He's property of the Raiders now. Play your ass off,if he's stays healthy all year, and get the big $$$ you're after..Watch Al franchise him just to stick it back to him,lol...

Good think the Eagles got Vick as it looks like McNabb will miss a few weeks.

If McNabb is out for a while who would you want. A sharp Vick or Garcia?

Well, that's a good question... maybe Vick if he shakes off the rust eventually. But right now, Garcia, for sure. McNabb being out -- ouch. :( (Saying that as a lifelong Eagles fan.)

McNabb is the Eagles QB PERIOD...;) Kolb Will start next week... He will do fine,I'm not worried about the Saints:D. Donovan will be back in three:)

Mike Vick chew toys available...;) And they are animal freindly...:D

Vick can't play till week 3 since he's still suspended. I would assume Kolb would play if McNabb is out.

Actually, he may not even play then. It's entirely up in the air I think. At least that is what they were saying when he was signed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Until Carolina stops getting chump QBs, they're stuck.

As a Jet fan, I feel your pain.

Our rookie QB did good yesterday. Let's see what happens against New England this weekend.

Note: fotografica need not comment. :D

How about them Cowboys, Jets, Vikings, Saints, and Ravens. The Philly D looked good too. We'll see what happens with McNabb over the next few weeks. All I can say about Adrian Peterson is Holy Cow! It's going to be a fun season.

You can't win in the NFL by committing 4 turnovers. Dolphins proved that.

Eurgh... as fumble followed fumble and Chad P threw an interception I found myself asking - REALLY?! Is this the team that had a record tying turnover differential last season?

That Brandon Stokley play was absolutely insane. It could only happen to the Bengals (as even Collinsworth noted on the commentary on SNF last night).
